Prince Albums You Hate

Thought it would be intersting to know which albums people hated and the reasons for it. Not albums you thought were meh but albums you hated.

.

Me, i hated Diamonds And Pearls, plus Emancipation.

.

Diamonds And Pearls - i really thought prince sold out with this one. the songs were so bland and overly commercial, which naturally meant they sold extremely well. Wasn't even gonna buy the album until i heard Money Don't Matter Tonight which is a great song, even though it was over produced. Bought the album out of loyalty to the guy but didn't like anything else on it. Very disappointed, but he made up for it with the excellent Love Symbol Album.

.

Emancipation - after buying Chaos And Disorder and reading an apology on the inner sleeve that it was supposed to be a private record but he only released it to finish his contract with warner, i got really excited about what was next in store from him. I loved the Chaos album, thought it was a return to form after the disappointing Gold album. So i was pumped when i heard the next album was gonna be what he wanted to release, thought he was keeping the good stuff to use when he was free. Heard the first single, hated it, but still bought the album 1st day it became available. Listened to it, MEH. gave it a good few weeks of listening, MEH. It was like he had lost his ability to write great songs, a procession of the same bland sound. I loved soul sanctury and the human body but everything else, meh. I felt betrayed by this album, maybe the blandest one he put out. My music relationship with him was never the same after this album.

.

Only bought a few albums after that one. Crystal Ball, Rave 2TJF - mehh, Rainbow Children and 3121. That emancipation album really ended my must buy prince album relationship. I had bought them all before that.

I find it funny that you don't like D&P, but do like the prince album. For me, they are tied together -- thanks to the god awful Tony M raps on both records. Both records have terrible songs. Both records have great songs.

"Hate" isn't the right word. "Just cannot listen to it" is better. The first one I'd put in that category is Rainbow Children and not just because of the lyrics. I like Prince's stripped down funky side, not this overblown jazzrock. Less is more. prince is another one in that category but it does have a few good songs (Continental, Sacrifice of Victor). Diamonds and Pearls, yeah I agree it's bland and overly commercial, but I guess he needed a hit at the time. It's one thing to record in your home studio, but quite another to own a studio complex with staff to pay etc. So for better or for worse, he had become a business man by then.
MPLSound is another one. He's just repeating himself there, trying to sound like it's still 1984.
Alright, that's enough now. Back to the albums I like! I like Emancipation. Maybe not everything is great, but with 3 CDs, there's still plenty of good stuff.

Love Symbol.
There are a few decent songs on it but the majority of the album is just really annoying. Anything with Tony M "rapping" or Prince "rapping" for that matter just irritates me.

20Ten.
Again, it has a couple of decent songs but the likes of Compassion and Beginning Endlessly are dreadful.

HitnRun Phase One.
The entire first half of the album is the worst thing I've ever heard Prince do. Even worse than Gangster Glam... It does slightly redeem itself with the last few tracks but it's not enough.

They are the only albums I would say I hate but even then, they all have at least 2 songs that I'd consider good. There are a couple of other albums like Diamonds and Pearls and Planet Earth which I don't particularly like but not to the same degree as the 3 above.

yeah, the rapping was bad but the love symbol album sounded fresh and exciting compared to the bland d&p. Personal choices, we're all wired differently.

I don't hate any of them. My least favorite Prince albums are more like neutral than mad.

The only ones I'd rate less than 3 stars out of 5:

Kamasutra
Newpower Soul
Xpectation

There isn't a Prince album I can't find something I like on. Love Symbol and Musicology get the least amount of plays as full albums though. MPLsound is a struggle as well.

No hate for any - even my least-favorite contain songs that I love.

That said, I do rank 'Musicology' as my rock-bottom least favorite. No cohesive flow to that hodgepodge at all. "Call My Name" is ace, and I also like the title track and "On the Couch." Kind of slim pickin's after that.

I don't "hate" the album, but I feel it has less to offer than every other album he issued.

Aside from Everywhere and Last December, TRC generally makes me ill and brings back plenty of bad memories.

Musicology, Rave Un2, Rainbow Children,Planet Earth,20Ten......These albums contain more songs that I do not like versus the number of songs I do like.

I didn't hate it. It made me cry a bit. I didn't feel Prince in that. I thought if this is the new direction. Prince is gone.

Since Prince died, I have been giving a lot of the stuff I've ignored in the past a second chance.

Interesting enough, I have found a new appreciation for LotusFlower, lots of good stuff there but the one album I can say i really do hate - aside from the excellent "Better With Time" - is MPLSound. That album is pure plastic to me, no soul.

These are flat out unlistenable, terrible albums:

.

"Xpectation"

"Around The World In A Day"

"Kamasutra"

"One Night Alone"

"C-Note"

"N.E.W.S."

..

These are not very good albums:

.

"For You"

"The Truth"

"Graffiti Bridge"

"Indigo Nights"

.

.

Just to balance things out, these are masterpiece albums:

.
"Dirty Mind"

"Purple Rain"

"Parade"

"Sign O' The Times"

"Lovesexy"

"Come"

"Chaos And Disorder"

Hate? lol, that's just stupid and the wrong word to use ... I don't hate any of them, why would I? There are some albums that I don't like very much but that's only normal considering his massive and exceptional amounts of output.

Totally agree.

Can't really say I hate any Prince album. Some I absolutely love, some I really like and some I listen only to a few songs. biggrin

I generally find that there are one or two terrific songs on any Prince album - which really takes "hate" out of the picture.

That said, Kamasutra is caca.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I never liked Diamonds and Pearls, until Tony was taken out (along with "Jughead"), then it was a whole new world liking that record.

The Rainbow Children can return to the field of corn from whence it came.

Emancipation can be edited & whittled down to a good two discs, or an even stronger one full disc, IMO. Lotta filler stuff on there, with tag endings, extended cuts for the sake of the 60 minutes, etc.

I don't really even care about Xpectation, C-Note, N.E.W.S., and his jazzy shit he was into. I don't even like the shows around 2001 or so. When you take something like "Baby I'm A Star" and flip it into some quiet smooth jazz instrumental for 5 minutes, I'm already in the parking lot. Bye Felicia.

The Chocolate Invasion, and The Slaughterhouse is 70% bad, 30% good, at best. I really think Prince lost his mojo in the early aughts, for a little while. Musicology got him back on track a bit (they way Diamonds and Pearls did. He needed a hit again.)

I think Graffiti Bridge suffers from the associated artists on it. Not that those songs are good in their own right, but just the Prince material by itself makes for a better record.

For You, while a nice start, is a little ...tame. It's very AM Gold/Yacht Rock. I actually love yacht rock songs (by folks like Steely Dan, Ace, Ambrosia, Christopher Cross, etc). But For You it like a dud firecracker. You think it's going to make a big pop, it fizzles, but ends up letting out a healthy soot-covered fart at the end. I don't hate it, but it's not in a regular rotation over the years.

Goldnigga - bish, what?

PlectrumElectrum - it almost makes want to listen to Apollonia's solo record instead.

[Edited 6/9/16 8:45am]

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.
