First of all, my recent review of this superb album

.

4 those of you who can't be bothered watching it, my rankings (Briefo descriptions though, better on the epic hit video). Ranking it is hard. 1 (17/10) and 2 (12/10) are clear leaders, but 3 to 8 are pretty much at the same level (10/10). 9 - 11 at a slightly lower level (9/10) and 12 (8/10) is the worst but still a good song.

.

1. Mountains - Just incredible stuff, the song, the singing, the mood, the revolution, that video, Prince's floppy hat and the falsetto.

2. Girls n Boys - In yo face funk and a cool sound/video, a very FUN song.

3. Sometimes it snows in April - One of his best and heartfelt ballads ever, tender emotions

4. Kiss - the perfect funk song, short sweet and funky, no wonder it went triple uranium.

5. Under the Cherry Moon - More great ballads and cool lyrics, good hook and mood here.

6. CTP - Starts the album off in a good way and very cool. Its a party y'all

7. ALHEYH - Great party jam with a message, funky and again top stuff

8. New Position - Just cool, lets go fishin in the rivers of life, more top notch party jams.

9. I wonder U - Sparse and bizarre, still good

10. Life can be so nice - Clangy and catchy pop, string melody, but not as strong as some other cuts.

11. Do U lie - Quite cute, but a bit too cheesy and Frenchy in its feel, the song preens a bit too.

12. Venus de milo - 2 minutes of piano muzak, but not bad and bearable with a pleasing melody, still I think Visions may have sounded better here.

.

Overall its an incredible piece of work and my 3rd favourite album.

Heaps in Australia, not so many in New Zealand, maybe a 100 hardcore fans, I know at least 4 hardcore Kiwifans and a couple like Lust and Mostbeautiful boy occasionally post here. There was enough people to sell out both shows (3000 each, but probably 500 fans who saw both) in February.

.

Australia on the other hand has heaps more, lots of very passionate Prince fans there and most of us know each other. Peach and Black podcast is based there and my friend Lovesexy06 lives in Sydney. Yes we have always liked good music down south.

1) Mountains (especially extended)

2) Life Can Be So Nice (unique sound)

3) Christopher Tracy's Parade (reminds me of the opening to the great film)

4) Anotherloverholenyohead (Good pop)

5) Kiss (overplayed, that's why it's #5, pop-perfection though)

6) Sometimes It Snows In April (also overplayed, otherwise top3)

7) Under The Cherry Moon (great melody)

8) I Wonder You (weirdly good)

9) Do U Lie (like the French connection)

10) Venus de Milo (nice intermission)

11) New Position (funky though)

12) Girls & Boys (overplayed, now annoying)

It is you, I speak in a New Zealand accent which is quite close to standard British English of the 19th century. I am also a native English speaker. Our English is different to American English.

.

Interesting you say that, as the Koreans found New Zealanders and Australians hard to understand, but the Americans very easy.

Do U Lie? is a song I've loved since the day I bought the album back in '86 (during it's first week of release OF COURSE, lol). I sing this song soooooooooooooo much when I'm driving it's beyond a joke. Agree totally with your ranking. Great minds and all that biggrin

Definitely one of my favourite Prince albums, and one of my favourite albums, period.

1. Mountains-very emotional and "full" sounding

2. Girls & Boys- one of my favorites, really hard to put this under Mountains

3. Anotherloverholenyohead- the jam

4. Venus de Milo-sooo beautiful

5. Kiss (a teenage thing, my mom really liked this song and it was embarrassing and uncool

so I always have a difficult time with it biggrin)

6. Under the Cherry Moon (I used to play piano and always wanted to play this song it sounds

a little sad and I like him singing in his "normal" voice)

7. Christopher Tracy's Parade - exciting

8 Sometimes it Snows in April (sad, I never really listen to it much because it makes me cry but it is a beautiful and haunting song)

9 New Position- funny as he spells out pussy

10 Do U lie- cute little ditty

11. I wonder U- too clanky

12 Life Can Be So Nice- soiunds weird and clanky

Great that Parade fans keep coming out of the woodwork. I looked up the music mag reviews today bacause it was so long ago I had had thought I remembered them not being too good. It turns out it got extremely good reviews, arguably the best outside PR, SOTT, and Dirty Mind.

Since his passing PARADE has been the one album I've been listening non-stop to. It was always in my Top 5 favorite albums.

MOUTAINS - Always loved this song and video

SOMETIMES IT SNOWS IN APRIL - Sighl.....

ANOTHERLOVERHOLINYOHEAD - Funky....live...even better

GIRLS & BOYS - I took French in middle school because of this song and album!

KISS - Classic

CHRISTOPHER TRACYS PARADE/NEW POSITION/IWONDER U - Always thought of this as one long suite.....the best opening of all his albums.

VENUS DE MILO - Just beautiful

UNDER THE CHERRY MOON - I had a black and white dream that I was with Prince in France with this song playing

DO U LIE? - Fun and fancy free!

LIFE CAN BE SO NICE - Wouldve been in my Top 3 on this list 30 years ago....I used to dance crazy to this but as I got older the other tracks became more meaningful

Every minute of last night is on my face today....

9. Venus de Milo

10. Life Can Be So Nice

1. Anotherloverholenyohead: Great "Prince & The Revolution" sound on this one. Funky as hell.
2. Mountains: Almost as good as No.1. Love the drum pattern and groove of this song. The horns are great too.
3. Sometimes It Snows In April: Such a beautiful ballad, gorgeous stuff. Heartbreaking to listen to now. neutral
4. Girls & Boys: Great funk song with a great arrangement. Loving the horns and The Revolution vibe.
5. Kiss: Great funk song with a great arrangement. The drumbeat and the guitar bits make the son for me.
6. New Position: Fascinating bit of slightly 'weird' sounding funk. Great production/sound.
7. Do U Lie: I just love this little weird 'chanson'.
8. I Wonder U: great track with fantastic orchestration
9. Life Can Be So Nice: Another great experimental track, but a bit too hectic for me sometimes
10. Christopher Tracys Parade: I love the orchestration and the happy vibe of it, but this one is a bit too hectic for me as well often.
11. Under The Cherry Moon: I am not a great ballad fan and I would rate this a 6/10.
12. Venus DeMilo: Nice instrumental but the worst song on the album for me.

Parade as a Prince album is very good in my opinion. I rate it as one of his very best albums. It is funky, quirky, experimental, fun, it captures the French vibe pretty well and is very varied but still quite cohesive. The production on most of the songs is great and the album sounds fantastic. I love all the gated drums and the Clare Fisher orchestration.

This was a very interesting period of time for Prince's music, with all the influence of people like Wendy and Lisa and Eric, Miles Davis. Also The Family album I consider closely related to Parade, it has a similar vibe and instrumentation.

I wish Prince wouldn't have disbanded The Revolution so soon, they were great together. It shows in the Parade album and their live shows in 1986.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I've tried but I can't do it. Being part of such an amazing whole makes each of the tracks better than they'd be individually, and I think this is a lot more the case in Parade than on any other album.

I'm not a huge sing-a-long kinda guy...

But this song does it to me every time!!!

Parade was released a few weeks before my 17th birthday, when I was at my most obsessed as a Price fan ('83-'89 ish). I still remember buying the album, taking it home and listening to it for the first time as if it all happened a year ago.

I find it so heartening to know people are discovering and falling in love with the album 30 years on.
