Do you all really think Tidal just ripped some CDs or downloaded some torrents to put up on their service? OF COURSE they had the legal clearance to put up those albums, NPG Records wouldn't have given them to Tidal otherwise. The history has been with Phase One and Two that catalog albums were added to Tidal along with those releases for a bigger splash. It's likely the original plan was to trickle the back catalog out along with new releases (for instance Phase 3 accompanied by Gold and Crystal Ball), but now that there won't be any more true "new" releases from Prince perhaps it was decided they could release them all at once.

In loseless ?

If this is so, why Tidal doesn't promote it that way, to make us trust in their material ?

Because Tidal is notoriously bad at marketing; they need to either fire everybody in the marketing department (if they have one) or create a marketing department period. They think celebrity endorsement is enough, but to casuals and people with no interest in the music industry, it looks "bougie" or like it's just "rich people trying to get richer" which we know it's not. They've neglected traditional forms of marketing as well as failed to pursue social media marketing to the fullest extent. They seem incredibly confused on who their target audience is and if they think they know, its too broad. They market themselves as a streaming service like Spotify or Apple Music and fail to bring attention to the numerous things that set them apart. In addition to lossless streaming, they offer exclusive artist content, discounted concert tickets, curated editorials, several other points that I can't remember. But, in addition to all that it provides the artists with a bit more freedom in the presentation of themselves, pays artists more per stream, and does a lot to bring attention to rising acts and aid in the discovery of new music. There's also a student and military discount for the service.

Then, there's the fact that Tidal needs to expand into other realms of the music industry and artists' affairs. With a number of partnerships and eventual subsidiaries and acquisitions, Tidal could be bigger than the RCA was and could rival giants in other industries, but they're in dire need of a turnaround.

Xpectation here. Was kinda hoping for something unreleased, a special bootleg or something today. Not from Tidal obviously. Maybe everything is out there now. Colour me disappointed. confused

I got another point of view. Instead of us hardcore fans saying "already got it", we should think about how new fans are made. So, you know, there's a market for future releases from the vault.

These 15 albums are a terrific addition, never before has so much Prince music been available so readily in such quality. It's a great feeling to think some 22 year old guy in Philly is listening to One Nite Alone ...live! or Crystal Ball, the song.

I kind of hate that Tidal currently have that exclusivity over the streaming rights, and the sale of some albums.

It's far too expensive.

Unless he literally 'gave' them away, all of that could change with whoever takes over P's estate..unless they made a contract to give Tidal exclusive rights indefinitely and it that is the case then I would be back to thinking P was very sick.

It's expensive because it pays artists what they SHOULD be paid per stream. If you can't afford to pay at the store, you leave empty handed. Same here. Plus it's only $20/mon. It's not a lot.

Prince obviously wanted his catalog to be Tidal exclusive because it was in line with his thoughts on the way the industry should be, you should respect that and respect the rights of other artists like he would want.

Yeah. In perpetuity is a very long time...

Did Tidal sit on these releases and then release them on his birthday for maximum buzz? If so, that's kind of mercenary.

There was never a sole distributor for NPG Records releases. I wonder if Prince gave WB Records physical distribution rights for some NPG Records content to be reissued on CD and vinyl? That still might not cover digital distribution rights though. It's kind of mysterious.

I remember when it was a lot for me, too. It isn't, anymore (I've been very fortunate), but I still ain't payin' that! lol

Or 1999: The New Master because they've only heard of that song -- and laughing their ass off and never listening to Prince again.

I live alone. Spending £1 a day on food buys you more than rice. I made hash on Friday, with half a bag of frozen soya mince, two potatoes, one carrot, one onion, and store cupboard seasonings. The total cost was probably less than £2 and I ate a quarter of it, and froze the rest in three containers.

And I kind of begrudge spending money on food, when it just ends up as poop down the shitter.

That title implies something special. These days, besides knowing the auditory horror it contains, it's annoying CD packaging size sits on the shelf, pissing me off.

Prince defined epic fail with every aspect of that release. I mean, other than probably making a ton of money off of it. If I ever hear that anywhere, I'm liable to go apeshit on the person playing it.

I never listened to it all the way through the CD. I got to Tony M, and said NOPE. The only track I ever listened all the way through on that CD was the Rosario Dawson track. What a disaster. Shame too, because Rosie killed it on the Gett Off maxi.

This proves the family has some control over the music. They obviously want it out. I'm sure the outtakes take time to collate and turn to digital.

Unlikely proves nothing including whether or not Jay and Prince had an agreement made prior to his death. Whether Prince signed a contract or not, no one on this forum knows. Whether or not anyone in the family had any say in the release of these records for streaming -- no one on this forum could possibly know. Apparently it is fun for some to speculate though lol

I mean, Prince followed no pattern. Nobody has a fucking clue. Even Jay Z probably is clueless on the matter. Someone probably hacked the shitty site and put it up themselves razz That is the ONLY way having 1999: The New Master makes any sense whatsoever (as a joke). Even Prince would have said "Aw hell 2 the know! Eye hate that hot garbage!" regarding that piece of doo doo.

The family cannot have control of anything because the estate hasn't been finalized. Bremmer is still in charge. So perhaps they have enough authority at this time to have legalized this release, but more than likely this was already in the works prior to Prince's death

No. He was against people stealing his music - piracy. You can buy them on the "Tidal Store" online I believe.

Here in the UK Jesse Johnson's albums aren't on there. I thought I saw somewhere that they are on there in the states. Can anyone confirm?
