I am certain that prince could handle anything negative anyone could throw his way, without batting an eye. If he had been affected by criticism, do you think he would have done the Lovesexy album cover?

ya, and most likely it'll be back to that soon. People were way past normal criticisms, it just didn't make any sense, I mean criticizing stuff that is pretty irrelevant, I didn't understand it and still don't. You had many people who on one hand don't really believe prince did anything worthwhile since 1987 and that he had just gotten lazy or something and didn't give a fuck anymore, but yet they'd eagerly wait for his next release so they could listen to it and rip it to shreds or pick apart his performances or...whatever. It's just wierd. There are artists who I haven't heard a good song from in decades (Lionel Richie) and I don't listen to much of his later material and I don't hate him for not being able to write a song anymore. I don't go looking for sites to talk shit about him and I'll always be a huge fan of his. I don't get the wierdness of the people here. I really hope Prince didn't look at this site as much as people are saying because his fans are awful.

I don't think that's true, Prince was pretty sensitive, which is probably why he had a macabre fascination with looking at this site (if it's true). I can tell by what he said about album reviews and also stories by people who knew him, just how vulnerable he was. Susan Rogers once said he said to her "you don't believe in me anymore". What the fuck should he care what some engineer thinks? But he did.

How do I deal with them? I probably should leave them to their delusions but I can't help wanting to defend Prince against the nut cases out there. I feel the need to protect his reputation against those vultures since he's not here to do it himself. :luv:

^THIS. (parts in bolded)
I truly believe some people have nothing better to do with their lives than to take out all their frustration on anything they can, in this case Prince. Same way that trolls feed on attention, some people feed on negativity. I mean, I don't really have a life of my own but I don't go around on an artist I dislike's videos just to hate on them. It's dumb and a waste of time and just doesn't make sense. "I was here in the beginning and I'll be here forever more"

I feel like this a lot of the time too, but I think about it and the people that I usually wanna fight know nothing about Prince and just want to get attention, so I ignore them. I mean someone who says Prince sucks because he made Disco music is clearly a dumbass. You can't fight stupid. "I was here in the beginning and I'll be here forever more"

it was calculated to hurt. he was treated like a giant pinata for people to bash and flog, and he was verbally attacked in ways we are forbidden to attack each other, according to the rules here. still makes me sad. . and to the extent that prince actually lurked here and did in fact try to please his fans, well.... poor guy. i hope he shrugged it all off as his fans were nuts. . and oh yeah. i've heard some people say that prince deserved to be bashed about and regularly hammered on because he took the liberty of protecting his copyrighted life's work from thievery. . even going so far as :gasp: suing individual fans and requiring the shut down of websites that were illegally distributing prince's copyrighted materials and/or infringing on prince's copyright/trademark. . imagine, prince having the sheer audacity to take the 101 basic, legally required prescribed legal action necessary to safeguard his copyright/trademark. the nerve of him. how could he. I was always very curious about this, because I lurked but didn't post much due to the anger and negativity. My question: What were they so mad about? Any idea what event triggered all the anger? I'm sure like anything it built on itself in that online mob sort of way, but what caused the tsunami to begin with? The real dire overriding negativity seemed very recent to me, like maybe 2-3 years ago.

who knows? but more than likely, their own issues. Projections or their own failures, frustrations and dashed hopes. Like a comedian with hecklers, every celeb has to deal with them, most celebs are pretty out of touch with that though. Bruce Springsteen has some pretty critical fans, I really never, ever got the impression he gave much thought to them. Outside of the song My Best Was Never Good Enough, he has never really seemed to give it much thought. Why would he? he has a family, all the riches he needs, plenty of adulation and accomplishements. Prince though, from what we're hearing, did watch this site and it's not like it's such an expansive site that he wouldn't have seen the negativity. I'm just glad I was mostly positive in the things I said and if I was critical it wasn't out of any kind of insane jealousy or wierdness.

the net is a wonderful thing in so many ways but in other ways it's just a cesspool. I have heard it likened to a mob mentality and like the kkk because it seems to bring out the ugliest part of human nature because they are faceless. People are curious creatures, easily suggestible and pretty conforming so once that kind of thing gets started look out. As for me, I never thought Prince lost much if anything, most of his albums I absolutely loved and looked forward to. So it was news to me when people would say he hadn't released a good song in 20 years or that they hated this or that album because many of those albums I thought actually rivalled him in his prime and in some ways vastly exceeded them.
as a guy who studied sociology, i tend to overanalyze people but I do notice things that seem to always happen. One is, they are never happy, no matter how successful and great someone is. You look at boxers, Manny Pacquiao in his prime had already moved up an unheard of 7 weight divisions and dominated men he had no business being in the ring with, but then people started saying he wouldn't fight black guys, once that got started, it was like a bunch of parrots. Then he fought a couple black guys which proved that wrong but then he actually did start to rapidly decline as a fighter. I've seen lots of boxers go through that and all I can say is, it was just a sign that they were so relevant in their time to garner that kind of criticism. Bruce Lee once said "they only attack the guy with the ball".

I totally ignore them. I respect if someone says to me " He was a great musician but I don´t like his music so much" or something of that kind, but not recognizing he was a genius is something else... This person probably don´t know anything at all about music (which makes one more reason to be ignored).

Ive been on this site for 13 years and they have always been here. It amazes me how a person can waste so much time and energy talking about someone's work that they dont like. I mean people use to come here daily just to talk bad about Prince or those that were so obnoxious that its obvious they were probably working for Prince's camp because they couldnt be objective about anything. So I guess we had them both here along time...the trolls and the ass kissers

Wished I'd of posted more in PM&M when I heard he was on here a lot, to add to the middle ground peeps more. The smart arseness put me off too. When I see the trolls anywhere online, it always reminds me of a documentary I saw. They tracked down this guy, who was trolling Mothers of murdered sons in America He was from England. They chased him/shoved the camera in his face as he got off the bus in some dead stop little village. Pathetic looking he was, cowering, had nothing smart to say when they ambushed his pitiful ugly arse. Yet that waste of space made those Mothers lives across the ocean a misery. ...I always see people say they've got no life/are miserable/misery loves company etc. Thing is millions of people across the world have no life & are miserable but they ain't trolling. It's something else. Sick in their heads. i saw a pretty good doc, can't remember the name, but it was about people who heckle comedians. they cornered the hecklers and asked them about why they did it and told them that it was hurtful. Some people, most people, don't have what it takes to be in front of a large audience, this irks some people to the point where they do the next best thing, try to rain on another's parade. It definitely is a wierd phenomenon, i remember seeing a local writer who was speaking in a bookstore, he talked about the time he met oprah and said she had a really large head, well that was enough for some asshole to take him to task for talking shit. the writer said "why is it always a man" I believe the answer is they want to be the alpha and they ain't so they talk shit.

Interesting. Now u mention it there does seem to be more male trolls. I've noticed they like 2 go after females more too. I suppose you've got to be cut from that cloth to really understand why. Just like I don't understand pedophiles, rapists, torturers, murderers etc etc etc. And I don't bloody want to. I find that syncophants that labeled every move Prince made a "masterpiece" to be at least as annoying as the haters who haven't liked anything from the past 20 years. The lack of objectivity from both camps is tiring. Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.
