Thanks. Reading my post back it did seem quite down on him. I am not at all, not even when it sounds like I am. My point was more that I can't accept he was an addict living on the edge of life so easily. I'd need a lot more proof before I believed that - but I am open to the possibility that it might be true. Not all addicts make their addiction obvious - but the thought of this doesn't sit well with me. The hip pain story doesn't ring true to me. There seems little evidence that his hips were so bad he needed Fentanyl. He seemed to have good hip movement around the (different) times people are claiming he had (double hip replacement) surgery and Fentanyl would have impacted on his work. There are claims he was struggling to eat for months prior to his death - I haven't seen anything like that with Fentanyl use. Why was he getting so nostalgic? Why isn't the P camp just being open about things? Why all the different stories that don't fit together? Why the calls to maintain P's privacy? I don't know the answer but I am not believing any version yet and I find it hard to see people calling him for his drug use or calling those around him for not being able to control it/save him when things are still so unclear. muleFunk said: The problem is that the whole story is spun into a narrative without the full facts being known.
The cause of death is Fentanyl overdose.
I read an article posted here that stated that the levels of fentanyl show up in blood higher after death. We know it killed him but we don't know when he took it. We know that he didn't have a prescription and that makes it a crime. The investigation up to this point has not led to any criminal charges.
I think that he was sick and that he started using these medications in regards to his sickness.
Do we know for sure he didn't have a prescription? No results of the investigation have been released. Paisley Park is in your heart

I've read so many pages of discussion and like everyone else I am still in mourning. First an introduction, I've been a member for 13 years. Never posting, only reading from time to time. I am educated on opioid addiction and recognize that he was addicted. No judgement because all addicts have pain. Emotional, mental or physical that they are self medicating. Moving on...
I want to discuss the hip issue as I haven't seen this shared yet. I wish I could remember the year but I can't it was somewhere in the mid to late nineties and was my second Prince concert in Cleveland, Ohio. The date before ours is the date where it was reported that he broke his hip, maybe in St. Louis or Detroit.., but we were notified that because of his injury that our concert date would be rescheduled and it was for several weeks not months but somewhere in the 3 to 5 week range. The reports were he was getting his hip replaced. So weeks later he resumed the tour and Cleveland was first up. For those of you that go to most of his concerts this was the concert where he had what seemed like 24 foot woman's legs as a stage prop that he would perform and dance in between them. He opened the show with a song then stopped and apologized, saying that he rarely if ever cancelled or rescheduled concerts but that he would make it up to us. Then he kicked off another high energy song and he jumped onto the grand piano and leapt into the air and landed on the floor into a split and popped right up. Now, I am the fan who literally the second that he begins I'm transported, I'm in Prince world, where my mother, husband, children... no one can take me out of that transport until he leaves the stage. I had floor seats and was standing in row 11. When I saw him jump and land my heart stopped for a second. My 1st thought was: %#$^ are crazy? There's no way you are healed from hip surgery to be flying off of pianos! My 2nd thought was: my God what kind of drugs did they give you to not feel the pain hip surgery and a stage split must cause? So I think he had multiple hip injuries and likely multiple surgeries over the years that he never let heal properly with incredible pain that was likely masked with painkillers. I also think there were likely other illnesses in the last 2 years as was reported in the "na" of other conditions from the examiners report. And as much as we all want to know, it really isn't our business. The family may have even requested that it be kept quiet and we'll have to respect that. [Edited 7/9/16 10:03am] [Edited 7/9/16 10:07am] This sounds like info i read in an article bout a month ago, unsure now who it was or where i read it but someone whose doctor was associated with a surgeon who had operated on Prince's hip(s) and that P had not heeded his warning or advice about scaling back his dancing and athletics on stage. This, according to the surgeon, had caused further injury, etc...Entirely plausible. And no, ive read ALOT of threads and no one has posted a similar story that ive seen so far.. I completely agree with ur assesment of addiction. It usually is always about self medicating for pain, albeit physical, psychological or emotional.. Your post is one of the most rational, even handed and informed ive read lately here.. Because the mods want it here: . What exactly was wrong with Prince's hips? No vague terms: what -more or less exactly- was wrong? What was kaput? Medical people please comment. . What was (when?) done to his hips? An operation? What is done in such an operation to 'fix' Prince's problem(s)? What are the remaining problem(s), if any? . More questions to follow. I've been a fan since 1978 when I was still a junior high 8th grader on the cusp to high school. Granted, there were some years where I shook my head at some of his work, but still loved him, his artistry and music nonetheless.
The fentanyl overdose, it's just still so hard for me to process, considering what we all knew about his healthy-living lifestyle. I still choke up (like now) thinking about it all. I often wonder if he was dealing with cancer, i.e. of the prostate, which might explain the (legal) use of fentanyl for pain.
I can't listen to "Let's Go Crazy" because of the elevator reference, since he, of course, died in one. [Edited 7/10/16 21:27pm] I'm in the news again

. That is utter nonsens. Why can't I be interested? Why can I have the info that this guy could have put in his never to be published memoirs? Why should I believe the hip myth? Why can't I connect Chaka and Prince's habits? Why can't I suspect Kirk? I am not saying I do all these things but just for clarity: there can be much more than most people here accept to be true. If his hip was a problem then how do high heels cause that? Why don't women have operations for that by the dozen? If he had an operation, why did he (appararently) still need pain medication? I'd say: operate some more to fix this stuff. It's not rocket science. So can we be sure he was not a recreational user of whatever? (remember the black album story? remember: `the reason why my voice is so clear`?) Why can't those things have continued in some form into the years upto 2016? Of course you won't accept this as a possibility but I do. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

I really do wish people would stop with the bs of "not your business nor mine nor anyone elses". Just stop that shit, will you If you think it's none of YOUR business, then say it or don't but leave others alone. People want to know and we don't give a crap if you think it is or isn't our business, it changes nothing. So shut up about it, keep it to yourself. People have a lot invested in Prince, we're still grieving, and still unable to process how this happened. It's certainly no other fan's business to keep poking, to decide what we should want or shouldn't want to know about. When people say this, they are trolling and stirring the pot. Stop it. Please.

[Edited 7/11/16 14:30pm] The medical examiners report gave us the official cause of death. People can want whatever. I'm saying we don't have a right to know more than we do now. Being a fan of a celebrity (even if one was a die-hard) doesn't mean one has a right to that celebrity's private life. If the family wants us to know more they'll release more. If they choose to keep the autopsy report private I totally respect that. We all know P was a private man and fams should respect that. Paisley Park is in your heart

This thread is grim. . There are a lot of assumptions being made about P (e.g. drug addict since the 90's) when there is no evidence to back them up. . There are lots of different stories from the P camp of hip pains/surgeries going back many years that never seemed to tie in with each other, the autopsy report or P's ability to perform. There are also many calls to keep P's privacy which only gives the impression of some secret being kept. . Whether you want to know or not, there is nothing we can do about it. Discussing possibilities is one thing but making assumptions and writing about them as if the truth is known seems a step too far. . People can also have different opinions without being rude to each other. People are hurting so everyone should try to be gentle with each other.

I hope I'm posting this following the org rules. On 4/22, Cyndi Lauper stated in an article for Billboard "I'm pretty devastated," Lauper, a friend and confidant to Prince since both were MTV hitmakers during the '80s, told Billboard on Friday morning (April 22). "It was pretty bad. I feel a little better now but, I dunno, I feel horrible. I loved the guy. You just didn't expect him to go like that. He doesn't do drugs; he was sick, so he might have been taking medication, but I don't know what the heck happened. And, y'know, he always pushed himself. He pushed himself, pushed. It really hurts.". So this is a good friend saying Prince didn't do drugs and was sick. But doesn't say what.

. He doesn't do drugs? She cannot be sure as he oculd have shielded that from her. He was sick: how did she know? If he was taking the medication we know he took for a sickness then he was in a terminal phase of something very bad.

This is a good friend of his saying "he didn't do drugs" like so many of his other good friends. & she states very simply "He was sick". What if Prince was really very sick in the last few months or year? What if he did have an illness, possibly terminal, and some of his close friends knew? Like Sheila E and Lenny Kravitz, etc. I read the story, thought it very interesting, and wanted to share. But I also believe he looked sick/ill in the recent months. He looked great in 2014 and then he didn't. I really hate seeing Prince listed as a "drug addict" if he wasn't. Saw a story today about opiad addiction and it had Prince's picture first and then a long line of photos of celebs that OD'd. Guess I'm looking for answers to a question that can't be answered. At least right now.

I wondered the same thing when i read that article. I eventually concluded that when she said that we still didnt know the cause of death and it had been reported for weeks about him struggling with the flu. Also, the emergency plane landing was attributed to the flu until after he died..This article came out the day after he died. I think she was just referring to what we had all been told bout him having the flu.. You have the same questions I have. If the family would release the autopsy report it would stop speculation. He certainly looked awful in the last five months of his life (compared to just a year earlier), and to have people around him say he was fine - were they blind? Or was the salary worth more than telling the truth? I think if he did have a terminal illness, it might ease the pain some people have been feeling; if he wasn't going to live much longer, it might be easier to accept than to have him labeled as anything, including a drug addict.
