Prince- Space (1994)

From his 1994 Album "Come"

I always loved this song. It's a Pop/Soul/Funk gem.

It sounds at least a decade ahead of it's time or perhaps it just sounds timeless.

I love this song. Probably my favorite song on that album, and the maxi single was great. The Universal Love remix is even better than the album version.

-

There´s an unreleased rock version of this song that I´d love to hear one day.

-

The bassline is a little bit reminiscent of Cosmic Slop by Funkadelic.Listen to both songs back to back and you´ll see what I mean.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Its so good.

All the elements are great in this song, I love the melody also. The bass takes it to another level.

A classic.

But I really wish it had been tracked to start a few seconds earlier, just as Come collapses into Space, and not after it already has. I always end up going into Come and forwarding to the end when I want to listen to Space for the whole experience.

Great points...amazing song. Love the imagery of staring at a painting of your lover on your bedroom ceiling. The remixes are also beautiful. Come is seriously underrated with great songwriting.

I have one of the singles, but it doesn't have the rap on it. I never minded it much. The Acoustic & Universal Love remixes are the best. Either the album or the Universal Love are great. There's something so groovy about, so laid back. There definitely are hooks & rhythms that can be related to "Cosmic Slop", although Funkadelic's song is a bit more in your face. The two songs do seem like distant cousins.

I did a playlist of the songs from Come. I resequenced the ocean sounds with new effects (took out the poem stuff), and used almost all remixes in the same track order. I used the Universal Love remix for "Space". I love it in there like that. It so much keeps the original vibe, but adds something new to it with the lyric changes. I called the configuration Come Again.

Oddly, my playlist runs 4 seconds shorter than the album, but some of the track lengths differ greatly.

  1. Come (alternate version #1 mixed with ending of album version)
  2. Space (Universal Love Radio mix w/o rap)
  3. Pheromone (album version)
  4. Loose! (from Versace & Other Experiences mixed with elements from album version)
  5. Papa (album version)
  6. Race (from Versace & Other Experiences)
  7. Dark (from Crystal Ball)
  8. Solo (album version)
  9. Letitgo (Caviar Radio Edit)
  10. Orgasm (altered with new ocean segue)

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I love this song! Was just about to start a thread about it. The melody and lyrics are so sublime- I agree with the poster who said it sounds timeless and the amazing single cover artwork.

I feel like Space is largely ignored by fans but it is a favorite of mine. The whole "Come" album is amazing- especially "Letitgo," I remember tryting to record it from the radio when it first came out.

The point of the playlist is to put a different spin on the songs, replacing a remix where possible; and finding the best remix available. Some had more options than others, but I don't hate the CB version, nor the album version.

Interesting he performed it live, tried to look it up but it's gone.
I have to go with the original as my favorite of the mixes I've heard.

I love this time period for him and wish he would have just continued it longer. I realize now why record labels had a hard time with him. Between 1994 and 1996 he made Come, Exodus, Chaos and Disorder, Gold Experience, Emancipation, Gold Nigga and the leftovers he put on Crystal Ball. eek eek

It's nice but I strongly prefer the cover of the Spanish Promo CD, more in line with the album and "Letitgo" single release.

On a side note, I would like to listen to a CD quality of the "Glam Slam Ulysses" unreleased version.

A little longer and sparse, unfortunately missing the synthbells in the chorus section.

But to be honest, I would like to listen to a CD quality of the entire "Glam Slam Ulysses".

The Universal Love Remix is brilliant. His 90's maxi singles were awesome the way he'd expand on a song and completely re-do it in many ways with additional lyrics etc.

Love this song...for many years thought the lyric was "everything I want to do with your body I would do to your hand" and not "to your head" which changed the meaning of the song quite a bit. I like this song in the same way I like "Glam Slam", they have always kind of hit the same spot for some reason.

All good things they say never last...

Prince's greatest vocal is delivered on the verse below. He cuts in with a raspy, gritty voice for the "I've had dreams of us..." line. Then he deftly switches to that beautiful high falsetto ("with eyes that fall somewhere...")...and then abruptly ends it all with a shift to a conversational tone.

Sheer brilliance.

.

"I've had dreams of us cuddling on the planet Mars,

Then when i wake up, I'm all covered in sex.

With eyes that go somewhere between rubies and stars

Don't look at me baby or I'll flex."

Yes, I loved that about his 90s singles. For me, it all started with the Gett Off maxi singles and all those different versions. I liked some, disliked some others, and LOVED Violet the Organ Grinder....basically more of a whole new song than a remix.

Sure, he started much earlier with the extended versions, in the early 80s....but those 90s remixes were so cool.

The Universal Love remix of Space, the incredible I Hate U remix with those adlibs, and Eric Leeds´s saxophone version. I Hate U was one of the last great remix singles.

But then again, there was also the Come On remix, which was also pretty cool. Then he took a long break and came back with the ManOfWar and HotWitU remixes....those were not so great.

How do you feel about those late 90s remixes?

Or The Dance?

.

Too bad that he didn´t put the rock version of Space onto the Space maxi. But it probably would have sounded a bit out of place there.

Yes, I loved those you mentioned. Especially the I Hate U Extended Remix with those extra lyrics (I'd pay somebody to knock you off...)
.
And Cream, even tho Do Your Dance is just a throwaway I like it and the Etheareal Mix.
.
I've always wished the Come maxi-single/EP got released, as mentioned on Prince vault. There would have been a few great variations on that leading into 18 & Over.
.
I agree on the Man O War and Hot Wit U remixes - they weren't great and also agree on the Come On maxi that was probably his last decent one.
.
With regard to the Space rock version - where's that from, is it out there?
