It made me laugh. I took it as a cute reference to that risqué side of his image. Good to have a bit of levity in there, too.

Yes she clearly wanted to celebrate his provocative and funny side. Prince was her mentor and friend after all. Jamie Foxx' expression lookin' at her butt was priceless biggrin

But I love this picture more...I think it captures her feelings a lot.

She could have stayed in that full outfit & the Parade look(without the asslessness) for the whole show

I love this one

kitbradley said: I personally do not think she was screaming AT ALL. My only issue with Jennifer Hudson is that she does over-sing. There are some singers who, by development, learn how to do that and it happens often with a lot of church born singers. A perfect example of not over singing would be Whitney. That was a church singer, but she made everything contemporary enjoyable because of the exponential ability/inherent ability she had to control her voice. I personally don't find Jennifer Hudson to be soulful, whatsoever. I just think of her as Gospel singer who can take you to church no matter what she is singing. That's not a bad thing. Fantasia is another example, she always takes you to church, but her voice is much more soulful because of her tone and also her ability to use her voice outside of the context of familiarity. She will take you to church, the party, the funeral, and the wedding. The problem with ANYONE singing Purple Rain is that it's an extremely simple song, that people try to make intricate and complex for very clear reasons: it is a hard song to sing. I think people think of Prince's genius as unmatchable because he could make songs that were extremely simple in composition context and still make you feel something much deeper than his compositions brought forth. It takes a certain person to sing Purple Rain really beautifully and touchingly. Jennifer didn't do a bad job, it was beautiful, but yes she did over-sing. Many people over sing Purple Rain because at its core? It's a gospel song a la 80's strong pop ballad. Lol. Patti singing Purple Rain was brilliant also, but again, oversinging a very powerful song. It doesn't matter who you are, how brilliant your voice is, or your status: Purple Rain is DIFFICULT. It would take a soul wrenching singer like Otis Redding (who also took it to church in his day) to get you in the core without oversinging. While this is opinion, it is simple fact that Purple Rain is hard to cover.

I agree with what you stated.

PR is an exteremly simple song but the strength of the song is in the simplicity of the song and quietness of it that still moves you emotionally.

Some think that in order to be moved you must "go to church" but to "quote" Prince "when a man screams you must learn to whisper" and that is what PR is, a whisper of a song that moves you deeply.

You must trust the lyrics of the song and the emotion you feel and let that flow through you. Not "belting" it out like it is a gospel song.

Now I would love to hear Thunder done by a church choir as to me that song calls for it.

As far as Nippy, from what I've read over the years, what we heard on the final cut of her debut album was very different from how she originally went into the studio. Clive had to reign her voice in, tone it down for Pop radio. Clive made her control her voice for that reason. We all know Pop radio genereally has not cared for black women who sing loud so in order to have that crossover success, they had to tone it down. And this may have played a part in a lot of black music consumers giving her the cold shoulder during those first few years and considered her music "white-washed". Being her two main influences were Chaka and Aretha, I can only imagine what Nippy sounded like when she really cut loose in the beginning of her career.

Well grieving 4 Prince is different than grieving for a family member or friend or good coworker.
I've been connected to Prince since the early 80s. The grief won't go anywhere. I still feel like I don't have closure. But I'm happy. I'm appreciating what and where I can. It's only been 2 months since he passed. For me when things end(relationships) it usually takes me a year from the time it ended for me to have the book 100% closed. I think I will have that Prince closure April 21st 2017

lol the lollypop's were funny like when Quincy was trying to get him to sing and Prince offered for him to suck his lollypop

But I don't think Prince meant for those yellow ass revealing pants to be funny.

Agreed. It makes me realize that Janelle probably doesn't get Prince. He made it quite clear that he regretted a lot of the crazier things he did in his career because it wasn't really necessary. The power of the music was enough. Stuff like that should stay in the past where it can be appreciated. Outside of that, I think she really captured some of the youthful energy of Prince in the early 80s.

I think she definitely "gets" Prince. I think this was just her way of paying homage and utilizing the confidence that Prince gave her. Historically, Janelle has worn full tuxedos for most of the duration of her career and has just recently begun showing more skin since she turned 30 last December by exposing a bit of midriff with her usual pantsuits. So for her to even consider this looks speaks VOLUMES and is a true testament to her love for this man.

Sheila and Co. took the cake. All the other perfomances were respectable (minus Bilal) but Sheila was THE tribute. Fabulous job by her to include other members of the purple family. Mayte being there was something extra special. I think what I love is that these women and have come together for this man. They've put the past behind them and it hasn't stopped them from forming a bond. Mayte took Sheila to get her tattoo. Mayte and Shelby J have been hanging out the past couple of days per IG. Kim did Mayte and the Twinz hair for the perfomance. Prince's team have COME TOGETHER for him. That didn't happen with MJ or Whitney. Prince's team is special. I love it. I believe he would've been highly pleased. Can we talk about how beautiful the ladies look too on the press line?? I loved the Twinz dresses. I'm not a big fan of floral patterns but I liked the cut/fit of Mayte's dress and the train.

Appropos of the conversation about the tendency to scream-sing Purple Rain:

**

Imagine if the tribute version had consisted of a person at a piano, alone on stage, playing and singing it softly. Imagine the impact of that. Well executed, it would've absolutely killed.

**

Missed opportunity for sure.
