Amazing, Amazing, Amazing tributes to Prince. The people involved, including Shelia and Mayte, and those involved in his bands were amazing. The end of the tribute was very powerful. Even though he is gone, it makes me happy to know that BET honored him in this way and always and forever will show him love. We should all be blessed and grateful that we were living in this time while Prince was here and entertaining us all. He is truly forever loved, forever missed, and a truly wonderful human being. I thank God that he allowed Prince to bless us as long as he did, and we were blessed to have him for such a time as this. And Jesse's speech was also very powerful and so important. I liked some of the performances, as well as Alicia Keys performance.

Did Alicia Keys sing one of Prince's songs, I wasn't sure if that was a tribute to him, or a new song from her? The show was pretty good, and it was nice to see his family there, and I am happy that I had a chance to hear some of the songs that I had never heard before (era late 70's, early-late 80's), so it was new to me; but familiar to more seasoned fans.

(Bolded part)Lovely post. You summed it up so eloquently. I will be forever grateful for the music and his presence that he shared with us.

My favorite parts were Sheila and the band's segment and Janelle's one but the whole tribute was done really nice. Erykah's performance was a little flat though and Stevie and the girl had zero chemistry between them.

The Revs and The Time too.

The Time is overseas but I really thought they would make it back in for the show. Maybe they couldn't get a flight soon enough.

If you check the Revs social media they real quiet. eek

Yeah. Not very generous imo. Why not acknowledge the Sheila put together a great tribute?

The wooh is on the one!

Just watched Sheila E. Wow. Amazing. You could feel the LOVE. You could feel his presence. She totally nailed that tribute.
Seeing Mayte up there was quite moving also. I don't care what people say, she was his wife, the mother of his unfortunately dead child, so yes, it made a lot of sense. Plus, Sheila invited her, so she should know.
This felt like closure for me. Thank you.

BET did that. They killed it, backed up the car, and ran over it again. They had everything you could ask for. His former bandmates, proteges, actual vocalists, everything. MTV shouldn't even bother doing a tribute.

Maxwell was absolutely AMAZING. I loved Janelle's energy. Sheila and Mayte almost made me cry at the end.

Coming back to this a day later and I realize a big part of why Sheila's tribute touched me so much, besides the great energy and execution, was it was full of those little hidden details we all loved about Prince - clues, cues and perfect little notes. Things that might have been a nod to other things, or maybe not. Specifically I'm thinking about:

*Was that Prince's voice introducing Sheila?

*At the end, when Sheila, Mayte and Jerome are holding the purple cloud up to the heavens, Mayte has her arm wrapped around Sheila's waise. Not unlike the famous Wendy and Lisa pose.

*Song choices. Some were obvious, but why America (which I loved), for example?

*Sheila and the whole crew dancing in bare feet. Was it a nod to his hip pain or (I hope) what someone else said, which is nobody can fill Prince's shoes?

*No attempt to copy a guitar solo.

There must be more?

the familiar 'oowwwhaaa' call she made while on the drums

* the embrace, didn't think of that one

* Sheila has done America on tour since 1985 she's done it on more recent shows too(guest Brown Mark on bass)

Mazarati would do the song (along with Head) on their shows in 1986

* probably the barefoot thing is because Sheila goes barefoot in a lot of her shows too

* Sheila's piece was the reason I watched it (also hoping the Time would have been there) but these are the only people who would have pulled out these things. The Prince yelp, etc Sheila represented me as a Prince fan and a HUGE Prince fan of the 1978-1989 yrs She tried to get as much as possible in that performance, She will carry this stuff an more into her live shows for sure.

Yep. I will never her and Prince performing at one of the 3121 shows in. Eva's. Those two were ripping and stomping the floor apart. I hope Sheila, Mayte and all his former band members, and those he helped promote their music and talent, and Prince's family members, find peace and strength in his passing. peace rose rose

There also seems to be an issue with Cat and Shelia at the moment.

sadly.
She did an interview that was posted in the Associate artist forum. That I guess it might have had to do with the engagement and jealousy issues, but since 1988

Oh, that call gave me true goosebumps.
The big difference here is that it was coming from a place filled with love and positive energy. She was doing a lot of Prince's moves, the slide was epic, epic!, and the embrace, all those small yet huge details that could only come from sheer love. Much love and respect to Sheila and all involved. <3

Prince's Head Costumer said they weren't actually fabric-less in that area. Basically, there was fabric which matched his skin color.

That was what I appreciated the most about it, she knew his biggest fans would be watching and she gave it her all, for us just as much as for Prince and herself. nod

Yea, really. Coming out in that outfit, so not funny... I kind of let
Janelle slide with her's though cuz I look at it as a celebration of the quirky things he did. It would have been better if it was the actual yellow suit he did it in though.

Thanks, I didn't realize Sheila still played America in her shows. Was wondering if there was any particular message in playing it during this crazy election year, but maybe not. There were a couple of moments during her tribute where I jumped out of my seat and squealed. One was when I saw Mayte, then Jerome, another when America started playing. Such a great jam.

To me, all those little touches made it the best tribute. It was a proper party, lovingly presented. heart
