I'm interested in hearing the unreleased Sequel to the "1999" album

As stated on the banner at the top of the forum:

NO TROLL THREADS! NO SOLICITING FOR BOOTLEGS! Discussion is fine, so long as the bootleg is not being promoted e.g. pre-release; requests/offers to share or copy, and links to download or bootleg sites are not. Posting Prince and associated artist videos from sites such as YouTube is also not allowed. Posts of this nature will be deleted and repeat offenders will be first warned, and then banned. Troll threads, fake tracklists, and attention seeking rumor threads will be also be swiftly dealt with. These rules are strictly enforced!

Were tracks such as " moonbeam levels & "purple music"
On that unreleased work?
I would want to hear that album:)

"Moonbeam Levels" was meant to be on 1999. Once "Free" was recorded, it was the stronger ballad track, and replaced "Moonbeam Levels".

where does Roadhouse Garden fit in? after PR but before ATWIAD?

PS. for every actual released Prince album there feasibly exists an unreleased 'in-between' album.

I knew "free" replaced "moonbeam"
But maybe he was going to use that for the sequel album..

We shall see..
Anything he did during that era was amazing

With so much material, the "in-between" album theory is quite solid. Prince recorded so much, and a lot of it might have been compiled into albums, rather than just single songs sitting on a shelf. If you've ever read The Vault (I've not), or DMSR (I have), the cataloging of music recording sessions mind boggling.

That's been said for the longest time now, but I'm not sure if I believe it.

The original leak seems to segue from the explosion of 1999, so I'm thinking it was actually replaced by LRC.

It's very possible there were several albums between his officially released LP's.

During Albert Magnoli's interview (I read it recently not sure when it was published), he said Prince had over 100 songs for what eventually became Purple Rain - and, at that point, "Purple Rain" wasn't even among those choices.

Definitely interested in this, though I do wonder if Prince was just being cavalier in that interview, as we have no knowledge of any planned configurations for an album between 1999 and Purple Rain. Given the wealth and quality of material that has been leaked over the years from 1982-1983, though, it would be very easy to put something together as a collection of those songs.

Well, that sound isn't necessarily the one at the end of "1999", and even so, doesn't mean LRC couldn't have been in a different spot. I mean, look at how "the Beautiful Ones" was right behind "Let's Go Crazy" on early configs of Purple Rain, etc etc. However, ML and Free sound incredibly alike. It's almost like how "200 Balloons" is a prototype for "Batdance". ML is the same to what "Free" became. So the replacement story is quite valid, IMO. And songs get replaced all the time. 1999 was such an unloading of songs and creativity, I don't doubt that plenty of songs didn't make the final cut on that record.

.

Either way I love ML so much.

One thing that is a little strange is that "Free" was recorded before "Moonbeam Levels". So it would seem that Prince would have originally had "Free" on a configuration, then either added "Moonbeam Levels" as another ballad or in place of "Free", and then dropped "Moonbeam Levels".

Wait, what evidence is there that any sequel album was genuinely compiled, or even considered? There's piles of outtakes from 82/83/84 but that's the same as it ever was. Prince talked a lot of junk in interviews in fairness.

I always imagine that a 'sequel' album to 1999 would begin with Purple Music and Moonbeam Levels back to back.

As far as I know, there is no real evidence. Prince mentioned in an interview long ago that he had the "follow-up to 1999" in the Vault and could release it if he wanted to. That's the only thing I've heard about it, though there could be other sources.

I think he mentioned it in the 1985 Rolling Stone interview

EDIT: yup

. I have the follow-up album to 1999. I could put it all together and play it for you, and you would go "Yeah!" And I could put it out, and it would probably sell what 1999 did. But I always try to do something different and conquer new ground.

That doesn't mean it wasn't replaced by Free. The tracking just might have changed.

There is a clip of Susan Rogers talking about Moonbeam Levels being one of her favorite songs. She said I had been sequenced on several projects but he always pulled it.

Wow, that's the quote this is all based on?? He sounds like he's probably referring to all the outtakes from that era, which is at least an album's worth. This reminds me of the Magnoli '100 songs' comment, yall take things way too literally.
