The definitive hit album Around The World In A Day. Configurations. This album could have been a major success and still not a cheap cashgrab one year after Purple Rain. I respect what Prince did with this project. But some songs are just too offbeat and experimental with a major audience. I feel that he could have remained in his true artistic vein and still produced a masterpiece. Now, here's where you guys come in handy. Following tracks are going to stay/replaced on this album: Raspberry Beret / Pop Life / She's Always In My Hair (I can accept COTH). Three A+ songs in my opinion. Which of his work during this period should fill out the rest of the album (preferably six more songs. But you can choose for yourselfs)

'Tambourine' should be made one of the classic B-Sides to a single from this project. The liberated space from the configuration you provided should have a long (longer than the 7" edit, but perhaps not as long as the 12") version of 'She's Always in My Hair'. 'The Dance Electric' in an 8 to 10 minute edit should be the highlight of the album. Include a refined version of the circulating outtake 'All Day, All Night' (although with the caveat this might not have even developed as far as this by late 1984/early 1985). 'Temptation' should remain as is, as it perfectly captures his 'Purple Rain'-era stage antics and serves as the 'naughty' track for the album. 'Condition of the Heart' should be held back for what would become UTCM/Parade. Perhaps one or the other of 'The Screams of Passion' or 'A Love Bizzarre' should be moved over to this album. 'Paisley Park' withheld for either what would become SOTT, or moved to a classic B-Side. [Edited 2/12/16 14:48pm] | |

I'm certain some are going to mention '100 M.P.H.', but that song from its inception, even though it would work admirably as a Prince release, was flagged for Brownmark's project. . It is clear from the version on the Mazarati album, which is in a "partially remixed" format, and an alternate mix of the released version circulating as an outtake, that this track has many more layers of synth and guitar (many/most of which are Prince's handiwork) than the fun, slinky demo contains (bass-Linn-DX7-breathing-driven). . I cannot decide whether the "completed track" would make it as enjoyable an effort as a P track during this era vs our perceptions of the song in its demo format (which is too underfed to make it to an album). . From a 1985 commercial standpoint, however, it would be a fine addition/fill-in for the liberated space on this theoretical alternate post-PR album, and most likely quite successful (BB Top 20 single), and most likely a better use for the track from the same perspective. . I LOVE ALL TALK of this album/project/era
I actually love Around the World in a Day and Paisley Park -it is such an iconic song. If Paisley Park on the album opens like the extended version with the guitar solo . and I want to hear She Pony(possibley Palamino Pleasure Ride) . America as well is pure Purple rock/funk . Ok I'm going to go with what was ready by the release date of ATWIAD . Our Destiny(with Lisa Coleman on lead vocals) the Dance Electric Manic Monday Roadhouse Garden She's Always In My Hair Condition of the Heart

ATWIAD and Parade could have been as huge as the PR era ATWIAD would not have had a movie by Parade if the movie was done right could have been just as big
But ATWIAD if Prince gave it a focused promotion, videos released a lot of singles, did various kinds of performances, like a Classic Hall performance of Condition of the Heart and one other song with full band and stringed instruments with David Jonathon Novi Suzi Susannah Jill Sheila E Juan Escovedo to give a classy performance giving a full fleshed out live rendition of Condition of the Heart. | |

I e-mailed St Paul a while back, and it seems that the studio 'Feline' is not really at all similar in its production to the version that emerges out of that early 1985 PR tour rehearsal jam. If the 'Susannah's Pajamas'/'Yes'-like circulating outtake instrumental shares any tracks with the unused 'The Family' album version (supposedly this track was given to Eric Leeds to develop further ~1988-1991 for a solo project, but this sounds pretty vintage), then it seems rather unexciting, and unfit to be on this theoretical album. I didn't ask whether this instrumental is or shares production with the unused 'The Family' track. .

'Hello' was recorded well after its album was completed/mastered. We need to look, it would seem, at suitable 1982-very early 1985 material, and not much is known about his 1984 studio material (and the sad truth is that there may be few outtakes beyond what we've already learned), and the 1982/1983 work may not match the contemporary sound well enough for 1985, and the songs from 1984 ("Our Destiny", "All Day, All Night") may not be at any acceptable stage of development in enough time for an early-mid 1985 album release. Oh of course the music is nothing like each other. The Family version retains a certain aspects of the PR sounding version, like the chorus part via the instruments, but it has the complete Family album feel. Have U heard the Family version?

you're confusing me lol there is the PR/rock version of Feline from July 1984(that is the one I refering to if they finished it and put it on ATWIAD) then there is the Instrumental version of the Family version(no vocals) There is the version with the Family(St Paul on leed vocals)-I don't have that one. The song is pretty hot musically.

Feline is an unreleased song recorded on 14 July, 1984 at Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse (on the same day Prince flew to Dallas to attend the premiere of The Jacksons' Victory Tour), and was intended for The Family album. Paul Peterson confirmed in 2009 that he did record vocals for the track, confirming that a version by The Family does exist. The song was not included on the album, but a rap intended for Paul Peterson was later reworked for Sheila E. on the track Holly Rock when Peterson objected to the lyrics of the song and asked for it not to be included | |

I am referring to the studio instrumental, with the horns. It worries me that this may be, more or less, *the* 1984 studio version (albeit without the vocal tracks, in its circulating bootleg version). If that is the case, it is very disheartening. . The early 30+ minute 1985 Prince/Revolution Purple Rain Tour rehearsal jam of 'Feline' is an amazing specimen, like the 1984 Birthday Show rehearsal version of 'Noon Rendezvous'. Maybe he should have mixed/edited these and released them as a single like the 12" IWD4U. . From St. Paul's response to me, I believe that the studio version, the one that was proposed for the album, may be a slightly more developed version of that instrumental (with the horns) we have, with vocals added. . I'm hoping this can all be reconciled by the studio instrumental being merely a 'Susannah's Pajamas'-esque ditty, from the same time period, based loosely on another [unheard by mere mortals] studio version of the track. .

. 'Paisley Park' could fit comfortably on a more 'Dream Factory'-like 1986/1987 album project (alternate to SOTT). Its production is, obviously, much more 'Purple' than the majority of songs used on known configurations of DF, but still highly compatible. . 'ATWIAD' he loved so much that he couldn't help but release it as his own (though it began as a David Coleman demo). This is in a time period where he seems to have some self-doubt as to his own cutural/musical sophistication, and his later desire not to be "Mr. Purple Rain" made using this as the title track for his next album a [superficial] exercise in musical exploration, a big f***-you to the Press and critics, and an outlet for self-indulgence, all at once. It maybe deserves to have been kept an outtake, but there are so many factors conspiring against holding it back during this time. It really doesn't have any other fitting home other than on the configuration of the album that was released. .

The only other I've heard was 1985 with Eric Leeds sax soloing, and that was crazy good too Family/Madhousish. no vocals feels more like upbeat YES than the mellow Susannah's Pajamas

I love the album as it is, except for the title track. So replace ATWIAD with She's Always In My Hair, and name the album Paisley Park (which is one of my favourite tracks). Add Girl somewhere and done. | |

The Family album is perfect ... Leave that one alone I still think the b sides took a huge bite out of prince longevity and killed his pr momentum ... In other words .. Brilliant songs like 17 Days, erotic city, always in my hair would have served prince career better on an album as their absence during prince pr run would not have taken away anything from the pr impact That said ... Remove the song "Tamborine" from the album and replace it with the superior "She's Always In My Hair".Also,remove the horrible "Temptation" from the album and replace it with a stronger,dynamic track.
