This album could have been a major success and still not a cheap cashgrab one year after Purple Rain. I respect what Prince did with this project. But some songs are just too offbeat and experimental with a major audience.

.

complete contradiction there. if it was just a "cheap cashgrab" as you say it would have been purple rain pt II. plus if it had been a cheap cash grab it would also have been just straight up as commercial as possible, and not "too offbeat and experimental with a major audience". so your complete arguement is fairly flawed. and besides, it was a success, was it as big as purple rain, of course not, but it was very succesful.

Cash grab? Even by your own description it's the polar opposite. If anything it was nihilistic commercially. I love this album. However I was only 13 when it came out and I found it really hard to listen to at first. I would take away temptation as I find it corny. Yeh always in my hair would be good.

do whatever you want..

just please never remove my favorite all time P track: TAMBORINE!

Right with ya there - defintiely one of my favorites from the album.

I'd drop Ladder and Temptation - add Dance Electric, She's Always in My Hair. And yeah, somehow end with Condition of the Heart.

Yep, let this one slide imprimis. Althought you raise some interesting points. Great work everyone. Still, don't feel ATWIAD (the track) or Paisley Park. Those are the tracks that drags this album deep down right from the getgo. What I am feeling is Susannah's Pajamas music

'Paisley Park' could fit comfortably on a more 'Dream Factory'-like 1986/1987 album project (alternate to SOTT). Its production is, obviously, much more 'Purple' than the majority of songs used on known configurations of DF, but still highly compatible.

.

'ATWIAD' he loved so much that he couldn't help but release it as his own (though it began as a David Coleman demo). This is in a time period where he seems to have some self-doubt as to his own cutural/musical sophistication, and his later desire not to be "Mr. Purple Rain" made using this as the title track for his next album a [superficial] exercise in musical exploration, a big f***-you to the Press and critics, and an outlet for self-indulgence, all at once. It maybe deserves to have been kept an outtake, but there are so many factors conspiring against holding it back during this time. It really doesn't have any other fitting home other than on the configuration of the album that was released.

U share some great info on this thread. Unfortunately it's as always lost in a jungle of threads.

I really wish we would bhave a place where ONLY those things can be discussed, instead of everyone doing their research in their corner and sharing infos in a totally random manner between 2 threads about personal opinions about songs, "what if" tracklists, Prince's haircut and other random stuff.

If other people expressed an interest in a more focused way of working together, I think we could share and compile a lot of amazing data nod
