Vanity's beauty was mesmerizing. Does anyone have a recent picture of Susan? What is Jamie Shoop doing these days? I bet they both have great stories to tell.

This was posted on tumblr and probably reposted on here before.

As soon as I read the comment asking about where Susan is now, I knew this pic would get posted. hmph!

That woman is NOT "the" Susan Moonsie. Brenda B has even said it isn't her.

The power of money. Yes they would. I've learned over the years EVERYONE has a price..

True. Parents that do this live through their children and don't think about the real cost/affect on their kids.

After their return from Europe, Vanity 6 headed out on the road along with The Time as the opening acts on Prince’s “1999” tour. The excursion was wildly successful and reviews along the way singled out Vanity 6 as one of the highlights. On the road, as the only one of the group’s members who came into the project as a professional musician with national touring experience, Brenda became the trio’s de facto leader. She managed to keep the others in tow and in line (Susan was only sixteen) and things went, for the most part, smoothly. The tour wound down after six months and Prince gave everyone some time off while he began planning his next project: a movie.

eek eek so she really was only 16?!

IDK, I believe her birth year is 1964 so in 1982 she would be 18

Hard to believe, but the Vanity 6 album had four singles, which was alot for a debut album back then.

"He's So Dull","Nasty Girl","Drive Me Wild","Bite The Beat".

As we all know, only one of these singles ("Nasty Girl") made an impact on the charts.

but this shows that Warners and Prince were truly behind these ladies.....aggressively promoting and marketing them.I'm convinced that a second Vanity 6 album would have been HUGE! I really wish Vanity had stuck around for the movie and one more V6 album. The potential for superstardom was there.

I agree, and they all worked hard too. all those proteges and bands.

I mean even though Prince is the puppeteer those 'characters' are the ladies

and Vanity's charismatic energy Susans coy sexiness and Brendas toughness shown throw perfectly

I think, if they had their own band of musicians and their own stage backdrop like the Time & Prince, that would have been a perfect show. Maybe a stage set that looked something like the Nasty Girl video. A brass bed, padded leather walls, steam/smoke, image of a city at nigh in the back

Vanity 6 the album is a pop masterpiece.

It's Blondie, the B-52's, the Go-go's and The Pretenders all rolled into one.

The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter

I have an interesting viewpoint....

Vanity was the ultimate "nasty girl"...for her,it wasn't just an image or an act...it was really HER.When she left the group and Apollonia came on board,I think Prince realized that Apollonia wouldn't be able to be fill those shoes. She was a nice lady, but not the "nasty girl" that Vanity was.So I think Prince changed the direction of the album.Highly sexua songs like "Vibrator" and "G-Spot" were removed, and Prince began recording lighter,pop-styled songs for them ("Manic Monday" being the best example). It's hard to imagine Apollonia doing a song like "Vibrator" convincingly biggrin Even when she demands "all the nasty people, sing" near the end of "Sex Shooter",it doesn't sound authentic. That's why I hate that Vanity left when she did.We never got a chance to get that super nasty, provocative, outrageous, second Vanity 6 album!

^ SoulAlive, you're kind of a possessed, aren't you?

An overtly sexual album would come out as gross.

What's beautiful about the Vanity 6 album is that it has a broader spawn.
Nasty Girl is sex, but Wet Dream is already about a High School crush and deviates from being purely sexual. He's So Dull is almost non-sexual, If A Girl Answers is pure comedy, and Make-Up is more about the sex wars in the end, and not just sex ; it's sexy.

Having a tracklist of only full-blown sexual songs would come out to me as audio-porn,
and I prefer Prince's songs collections to be multi-faceted.

When you have a singing group of three women dressed in lingerie, the main message is "SEX" smile and I didn't say the entire album should be sex...just Side One ("Sex Shooter","Vibrator","G-Spot"....these tracks are thematically linked). It could have been a truly intriguing concept.

Why not... It's true that "1999" the album has sex all over it, and it's not a problem.
But I think that Prince's thematics about relationships became more interesting, or rather less unidimensional when he started to incorporate the idea that sex just for the sake of it was prone to insatisfaction.

With "Purple Rain" the album, we saw the beginning of deeper lyrics : "When Doves Cry", "The Beautiful Ones" and "Purple Rain" go into territories almost unexplored for him until then.

Even "Darling Nikki" exsudes a kind of impending doom, the consciousness that sex is something that can make us hurt one another, and not just mindless fun.
This way of thinking culminated in "Temptation", which is maybe too obvious for its own sake, but the pyrotechnics displayed make for the missing subtlety.

But the double-sided side sword that sex is, is more interesting to me, because it's based on pure truth : passion is one of God's great gifts, but it can come at a heavy price.
"Irresistible Bitch" may seem unidimensional, but the gloomy feeling speaks of addiction, the dark side of sex if you wish. Once SKipper introduced this indispensable counterpart to sexual relationships, he stopped being just a perverse, almost cartoonish character, and started walking into Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye territories.

Tracklist that alternates between careless sex, and the price your soul may have to pay, is what made Prince's albums richer. "It" and "Slow Love", "Hot Thing" and "Forever In My Life", "U Got The Look" and "If I Was Your Girlfriend", it's those intertwinings and questionings that make for a more profound work.

Review: The Prince Panel Discussion With Touré, L.A. Reid & Susannah Melvoin

Decemeber 1982

Susannah talked about the first time meeting Prince at a Christmas party where he and Vanity where wearing the same clothes they would wear to their famous Rolling Stone cover shoot. Susannah introduced herself as Lisa's sister (Not Wendy's) and while she was talking with Prince and Vanity, Prince started pinching Susannah's cheeks with Vanity following, calling her cute.

That's her fault for waiting till '93 to get paid by prince ...

Awesome foresight for knowing he'd change his name to that though.
