New topic PrintableSweet feathery Jesus, this album frickin' blows! It makes the six album stretch from Musicology to 20Ten seem like timeless classics by comparison. Phase One kicks the unholy hell out of it!!! Phase Two sounds like lame old folks music. It has the stink of "white man's overbite" all over it.
[Edited 12/13/15 7:08am] Hi-yo Silver, it's The Bone Ranger!

"Black Muse" was almost ruined for me immediately when I realized what other song it reminded me of after the vocals kicked in: "Joe Cool" by B.B. King. "The password is what."

It's 2 songs actually. at 4 minute 19 a second song called "A Thousand Light Years" starts and was once part of the Welcome 2 America album. I have heard the album...don't ask me from who or how...just know that this was one of the songs.

I'd like an apology. I hate Billy Crystal. We don't need to see that hoser here. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

My thoughts ... Exactly!

10/10 for the originality of your opinion.
0/10 for what I actually think of the assessment.
First of all, HnR1 being better than HnR2? (there's like, one courageous other person that thinks the same that I know of here, I'm guessing it's about really liking dancey tracks).
Secondly, you're essentially saying that albums like Planet Earth, MPLSSound and 20TEN have better tracks? Original!
Thirdly, this is supposed to have "white man's overbite"?
But it's ok, takes all sorts to make the world go round.

Have a feeling this is gonna end up a cult fave of more than a few fans. It's the right mix of P horniness, deep love, compassionate politics and a good touch of silliness. I don't usually like him in this jazz/musical mode but tunes are solid here

I'm loving this album myself, but I also loved phase one and AOA. I think Prince has had a pretty decent run these last couple of years. Out of all Prince albums I very rarely listen to Rave un2, New power soul, MPLSound, Twenty10, Planet Earth and Chaos and Disorder, now those are what I consider to be poor slbums and these most recent releases aren't anywhere near that level of rubbish. I wanted what was yours, now I just want u 2 care

I somehow missed this thread yesterday, saw it a bit ago, rushed to tidal to buy FLAC (even though I've already purchased 1/2 the tracks), saw you have to buy both albums... No thanks! I'll buy CD or vinyl, I'd even pay $13 for Phase 2 on FLAC. I will NOT pay $26 for digital copies when I've already purchased 75% of the tracks. Don't hate your neighbors. I agree, it's great to get new music on a regular basis. But on the other hand, can you imagine the strength of the album if Prince did wait 4 years? But we all know Prince doesn't work like that, and that's fine by me. O+>

I had a chance to listen to the new album last night. A few immediate reactions...what the hell is Screwdriver doing on this album???? It should have been on PlectrumElectrum...terribly out of place and the track never seemed to find the right groove. Other than the glaring omission of Free Urself (hopefully phase 3?) I am LOVING most of the tracks! Black Muse,Revelation, Big City, Groovy Potential, Stare, Baltimore are all top notch!!! The rest are really good

It's Biblical, ultimately--Isaiah 2:4: "And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more."
Of course, it has a life outside of that original context. The whole turning from war and anger to peaceful constructive activities. It's a common metaphor--and the same verse is behind "Down by the Riverside"'s references to "lay[ing] down my sword and shield" and "study[ing] war no more."

WHEN SHE COMES is my top track here, in fact the only one worth listening to. A far superior slow jam to recent efforts like On The Couch or Satisfied. This is a little weirder, and like someone else said, a slight distant taste of Parade. Prince is stretching himself here a bit, I think, unlike the rest of the album where he treads safe ground. Listen to that opening vocal line, the melody is crazy. And always nice to hear Prince drumming, too . . The rest of the album, well, hmmmm, nooooo.... PIPS! Eurgh...
