This astounds me. To me, it's perfect pop. I guess if you preferred what The Time and previous Prince albums served up, it may have been too lite to your ears?

There's maybe just three Prince albums that don't have at least one song I don't care for.
I didn't like Ronnie Talk to Russia then but now I do.
International Lover is the oldest song I heard then that I still don't like now.
On Purple Rain: Take Me with U is my least favorite song on that album but now I find it charming.
ATWIAD: The Ladder got on my nerves!
SOTT: It sounded like filler to me

Dirty Mind. After the R&B/funk of the first two albums, I wasn't ready for new wave sounding music. I didn't buy this album untill I heard Head and Do it All Night. U might not like the taste, but I'm still going to stick your face in this Funk

"It"
Now I love "It", but not then I only listened to "It" on my way to the other tracks.

yes, grew on me. The story behind the recording too that goes something like this. He was recording the album with the NPG and came in one day to tell them they'd have to wait a bit. He goes into the studio and starts recording track after track, not stopping to hear the work in progress between tracks, including recording the many tracks of vocals. They asked him what he was doing, he said "it needs this". When he was done he had the finished song.

Hm, first that comes on my mind are: Courtin' Time, Dolphin, Tell Me How U Wanna B Done...but somehow they grown on me with times...

Arms of Orion. That was a shock for me, hearing a Prince song I really thought was terrible. Soon to be followed by Graffiti Bridge, New Power Generation, Jughead. There are loads of them now.

- The Ladder & Temptation.. I always stoped ATWIAD after Pop Life. - Glam Slam / Anastesia - I always had to fast forward from Alphabet Street to Dance On - Arms of Orion - I always had to skip from Electric Chair to Partyman Change it one more time..

I was only able to get into Courtin Time after I put it in the mix of The Vault album. There it felt right and now I can appreciate it. Change it one more time..

This constant Mplsound harrassment is close to bullying, you know that? I like Mpslsound because I think it has great qualities as a work of art, qualities of which we could discuss if you were inclined to have such discussions instead of shouting "like" and "dislike" all day long. I don't "like" it based on a brainless gut feeling that would be based on little but my own subjective emotional response, even though my brainless gut feeling also tells me that I like it. Of course the fact that my opinion is that it's a great album doesn't mean it's one, but unless this can be debated with people who can give a more sophisticated argument than "it's turd" or "it's genius", it's useless to try and debate it. Peace I like MPLSound too so you're not alone. As for first Prince song I didn't like I suppose it would have to be Compassion. Actually, pretty much most of 20Ten but that's track 1 so it was the first one I heard. That's not to say I liked every song from 1978 - 2010 but i listened to his discography backwards. So 20TEN was a starting point. The earliest recording I disliked was My Love is Forever.

Woaw back in 1985, I remember that I had the same feeling! "Money won't buy U happiness but it'll pay 4 the search."

I can identify with a lot of the picks here. But I've realised that, during the vinyl years, I got used to, and often became to like, the songs that didn't click with me at first. A track would have to be especially bad for me to take the trouble to move the needle, which I why I was eventually able to discover the genius within songs like Tamborine.

Ah, okay, this makes much more sense. I couldn't believe what I was reading, but now I know I wasn't reading what I thought I was reading!

We Gets Up, to me, is a mediocre tune on a mediocre album. I think Prince was a weird place when he made that album.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Very good point. And it was even worse with cassettes, because you couldn't see where the next track began - you had to FF, FF, FF a little more... d'oh! Rewind a bit, rewind a bit more, aaaand, there we are.
