Save yourself and don't bother. The human brain simply cannot comprehend such contradictions (you don't censor your songs? "Spirituality" and "The Christ" says hi.) and stupidity (such as whining about being misquoted when your bullshit "no recording or taking notes" prevent you from being properly quoted). I'd like to see the fams (and there are some in this thread already) try to defend this one without looking insane.

Prince said the internet was dead for music and he was right. At the time, and even today with Spotify and Tidal and iTunes, it's still something that mostly benefits the labels with deep back catalogs and major artist.

In a way it democratized the playing field, but also made it harder for new artists to make money from recorded music. Having said that, it's always been hard to make a living as musician. Becoming a legend like Prince takes a hell of a lot of talent and also a little bit of luck.

It boggles the mind that people think Drake and others are proof the Internet is a great thing for music. It's been the slow death of the music industry, but for the big media companies, music is only one revenue stream among others. Pop music has always been a business, but one that was at its best) conducted with passion and flair, not just metrics.

Wherever you stand on Prince and his musical worth nowadays, you have to recognize he's been at the forefront of important battle between creators and the media companies that turn a profit off the whole cacophony, many of his concerns turned out to be prescient.

There is an urgent need for breaking excessive media control in the hands of the few. It's not just music, but all intellectual properties including books. Massive availability through a few giants like Amazon or Apple has hurt the very fabric of these industries and allowed mega-companies to dwarve the traditional players.

Musicians as a whole are not making enough money off their creations thanks to a system that pays them fractions of pennies for the one song here or there.

Yes Prince it's all because you are black. It has nothing to do with the way you conduct your business, follow through professionally, sue your fans or treat others. razz

I liked the article. A lot better than the interviews he was giving to magazines like MOJO 1-2 years ago. He's actually talking more about his past and things like Weather Report influencing him.

Also, he's explaining in clear terms what a vague statement from a few years ago meant. eyepop

No, he says, he never considered just changing the lyrics of a beloved but filthy old song like Head or Darling Nikki so that he could still perform it. “You want to hear it? It’s on an album. I write so many songs that I don’t even think about those songs any more. I don’t get attached to it. Because if I did, I couldn’t move on and there’d be no space for a new song like Stare. That’s what you want to listen to.”

Uh nah, I'd rather listen to Darling Nikki.

Yes.

Another few Stare's and stale non-selling albums and Prince will finally have gone the way of the dodo.

For remember, people: dodos disappeared because they didn't make any MONEY off the internet, not because they made BAD MUSIC and still demanded to be paid upfront.

--- Musicians are not getting rich off of digital sales or streaming. Music sales are at a all time low. He never said no one made money at all ever on the Internet. He is also not the only one saying this.

Actually, I think, back then, anyone who read the full quote could infer what he meant, because I did. The media and onine posts kept shortening the quote down to that fragment.

""The internet's completely over. I don't see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won't pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can't get it." - Prince as quoted by The Mirror

and as you can see, back in June:

[Edited 11/12/15 17:36pm]

.

Expecting an advance from iTunes et al is just idiotic. They're a medium.

.

But of course Prince wants an advance, because he's too lazy to promote anything. HNR was dead and buried on release; dude couldn't even be arsed to promote it at his own release parties.

.

Note that Prince has yet to offer any other viable solution. You'd think he'd been able to in the past two decades; instead he's still doing "shop record to label; get paid advance; expect huge sales to happen without any effort".

Didn't we just talk about lying? Perhaps I'm mistaken, but I recall Prince changing the lyrics to "Sexuality", for instance.

.

In the article, it's only listing Darling Nikki and Head, and does not state there are other songs that he was willing to change the lyrics to be able to perform them. When was the last time Prince performed Darling Nikki live? He's teased with it, but he hasn't performed that I can recall, and the same goes for Head. So he's not lying. It's just merely that others are wanting to incorporate all songs in that statement when that statement only mentions two songs.

.

Lemme give you a clue: notice the word "like".

.

But I get it: you can't stand to see little Princey be exposed as a liar again.

.
