25th Anniversary of Graffiti Bridge

Unless I'm mistaken (and I often am) today is the 25th anniversary of the theatrical release of Graffiti Bridge. How will you celebrate? Eating hot peppers? Pissing on plants? Running people over?

WEIRD! I did not know this, but, reading about the era in Matt Thorne's book, I was in the mood, and...

I'm watching it right now!! Robin Power's doing that #1 song right now... boogie

got this info from Wikipedia:

The film was nominated for five Golden Raspberry Awards including Worst Picture, Worst Actor (Prince), Worst Director (Prince), Worst Screenplay (Prince), and Worst New Star (Ingrid Chavez).

Despite media hype of it being the sequel to the massively successful Purple Rain, it was a commercial and critical failure and was included on several Worst-of-1990 movie lists.

The title "Graffiti Bridge" comes from a now torn-down bridge located in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. The bridge was torn down in the early 1990s to make way for new construction,[4] but to this day remains a local legend.

How will I celebrate? By asking Prince to refund my fi' dollas (again).

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I am celebrating because it is 25 years ago today since I watched that monstrosity of a movie. Fucking embarrassing to watch, even when you're on your own, let alone when watching it with other people around!

We're gonna change the world, the only thing that's in our way is you.

Yeah, that's some ridiculous lyrics.
Skipper was in some serious nervous breakdown at the time.

Not much to celebrate, I guess.

That movie came out during an awkward period in my life. It's cold comfort to look back and realize that film sucked on its own... without any depression that might have been influencing me at the time. lol

I agree with you barring "Tick Tick Bang", bad as the movie and to me strongly in the league of the worst tracks ever released by P.

The other P songs with maybe "God Is Alive" and "The Grand Progression" added and a better sequence and no segues would have made a classic P album.

It's people around Skipper we have to blame.

A movie is something storyboarded, planned and pre-produced.

There must have been a hundred opportunities to speak about the disaster this was.
It was a train wreck happening before their eyes.

And yet, everyone kept his mouth shut. What a bunch of pussies.

Skipper acted a like a whore afterwards.

Heck, GB was prostitution as well. It's Lovesexy disguised as Purple Rain,
it's an attempt to sell vague spirituality concepts, whereas "Hold on 2 your soul"

was a genuine message.
Or maybe it was a multi-million dollar self-analysis,
with Morris playing the evil / greedy / addicted-to-celebrity side of Skipper,

and Skipper hoping to turn out as a saint,
in short a rich man's whining no one cared about.

GB does not work because it's not honest.
GB does not work because it screams that Skipper has no respect whatsoever for the audience.
Nobody digs his movie, except for himself.
He just likes to look at his own reflection in the monitors, that MoFo Paula Abdul clone.
With a stupid smile, that dumb extatic expression he wears all along.

After the failed attempt of bringing his "Love Is God" thematic to the american table,
Here's Skipper doing threesome with Diamonds and Pearls (the suggestive shots in "Cream" and "Gett Off"), riding the Rap trend like your average opportunist, leaking hundred millions contract rumours in the press.

New Power Generation? We want to "change the world"?

Bleah, and boo.

I put this on for my wife after she said she liked Thieves In The Temple. Fuck me I was embarrassed and cringed throughout, it had been a few years since I'd watched it so I forgot how bad it was. How he got WB to 'release it' I'll never know

I agree with this, as much as I adore Diamonds and Pearls and his other '90s albums it kind of feels quite sad to see him doing his own thing to the next year kind of following the crowd. Not that parts of GB weren't typical of the time, because they were. Especially the movie, it stinks of early '90s. But it felt more original because it was Prince and because he brought the whole spiritual side to it.

Admittedly I much more prefer the persona of Prince as The Kid presented in Graffiti Bridge (spiritual kinda guy) to his more 'Morris Day' persona. He did once say that The Kid and Morris actually represented two sides of himself.
