Let's Revisit Prince as a Co-Lead or Background singer While driving back n forth to work this weekend I was listening to Cherry, Cherry and Count the Days and I was just thinking about how good of a background singer or co-lead singer Prince was I mean his voice instantly brings out the best in whatever artist is singing lead His work with Sheila E. and Tevin Campbell are simply amazing. I wonder if he knew how his voice really brought out his proteges talents. Of course they had careers before Prince but he put in some work on their songs. It's wierd cuz I've played some of these songs for other people and they instantly knew it was Prince singing background Opinions? U think he overshadows them or makes them better?

What about Prince's background vocals for his own recordings? Marvin Gaye is the only other artist I can think of that has layed down such complex harmonies. "He's a musician's musician..."

Yeah, his background vocals are pretty neat on The Time's first album. I've often thought and still do think Prince should have saved the tracks from The Time's debut for himself. Particularly"Get It Up"

Marvin invented it, by accident, as so many great discoveries, during the recording of What's Going On. Engineer Ken Sands told the story in Mojo magazine (March 1999):"Marvin had cut two lead vocals and wanted me to prepare a tape with the rhythm track in the middle and each of his vocals on seperate tracks, so he could compare them. Once I played that stereo mix on a mono machine and he heared both voices at the same time by accident."

Background vocals fan here
Oh yeah, he's an exceptional background singer. I can definitly say that he could channel Marvin Gaye in regards to the background vocals
I have never heard a male vocalist master a 3 parts harmony the way he did. And I love the fact that his background vocals don't sound generic. Sometimes they even add more character to the song than the lead singing.

Would someone mind making a good list of tracks for me to listen to that feature P as a background singer? I got two sides... and they're both friends.

Some of his background vox on the first Time album almost sound like they just left in the guide tracks or something, especially notice it on Girl.
Did he not sing the lead on Count The Days and Cherry Cherry? ¡The Future Is Ours, If You Can Count! https://www.youtube.com/w...A_zTY0qWWk

Glamorous Life by Sheila E comes to mind people often don't realize that P is backing Sheila for the entire song thus why it's so awesome! And also 7 one of the best layers of P vocals EVER The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.
Remember there is only one destination and that place is U All of it. Everything. Is U.

Could anyone tell me if thats Prince doing background vocals on the Common song Star 69 (ps with love). I know Prince played keys on it but he's not credited as singing. But it does sound like him. A lot like him in some parts.

I don't think any other artist has mastered it like Prince though...Marvin was great, but Prince's voice is just special.
