What songs do you show people to try and get them into Prince?

Obviously not "get into" the way most of you all here are probably into him but to get them interested in listening. I say this because since I have so much fun listening to his music, I try to share it with others but rarely are people responsive to it.

Then I remember I didn't even like him at first myself. I'm trying to find a good balance between accessibility and the uniqueness of his music. But at the same time, as great as 1999, Raspberry Beret are, most people have already heard them and you know how dismissive people are to things they've heard in passing.

I like to play live bootlegs for my guy friends and then songs like I Could Never Take... and If I Was Your Girlffriend for girls.

I thought I found a good one with Scarlet Pussy, but the person I was showing it to had little to no reaction to it.....hmmm.

What songs do y'all play?

Erotic City - Whether they speak or not, they're either bobbing their head or tapping their feet. And if they didn't already know, eventually I hear "What is this?!"

I don't, because either you're into him or either you're not, that's the way I see it. His music speaks for itself, and either you like it or you don't.

Usually something that warps their perception of him, like if they just know him from the radio pop stuff like Kiss or Diamonds & Pearls I might play them something like Bob George. Even something like "Shh" is cool, I've played that to chicks who grew up hearing the Tevin Campbell version and then can hear the way Prince turned the song out. If they're not familiar with his guitar playing that clip of the While My Guitar Gently Weeps solo also usually goes over pretty well.

Exactly. Plus, I can't be bothered being around boring people and if they aren't boring, they would already be into him. At least his old music. I can't blame them if they're not into his new music. lol

I ususally find a few songs that have that vibe that the person is in to and then just start playing them. I had a friend who liked jazz and fusion but absolutley hated Prince. One day he's in the car and loved the CD that was playing and wanted to know who it was so I introduced him to Madhouse. He fell in love with the CD and wanted more. Only then did I reveal the truth about Madhouse. He was blown away but curious. So he started exploring the musical world of Prince and now he's a huge Prince fan.

Now the light fades out and I wonder what I'm doing in a room like this
There's a knock on the door and just for a second I thought I remembered you

I've turned a few people on from playing the sign o the times album, I was with a friend and played the first four songs on SOTT and he loved it, next time I saw him he had bought the whole album. Actually a lot of my friends (Im in college) really have gotten into AOA and HNR - I let it fallinlove2nite - June play in a car full one day and they all loved it, and I think a few even downloaded a few songs. but usually I go with:

Erotic City

Girls and Boys

When Doves Cry

Sometimes it Snows in April

Bob George

Mountains

Thunder

Raspberry Beret

The Beautiful Ones

Housequake

Joy in Rep.

Pop Life

Tambourine

Cream

Ballad of Dorthy Parker

All my Dreams

and I usually throw in these which leads to "I had no idea he wrote that"

Manic Monday

Nothing Compares 2 U

Jungle Love

I usually show people Prince depending on what their music tastes are. I'll do it discreetly.

Soft dinner music? One Nite Alone

"This is such wonderful piano!"

"oh... it's Prince!"

Bam.

But in general, I'll show people

Colonized Mind

Purple Rain

Sign O the Times

Endorphinemachine

Most Beautiful Girl in the World

When Doves Cry

Kiss

I'm down with not playing the hits--you don't want to trigger the knee-jerk anti- reaction every time when attempting to entertain. Usually, I'm not trying to convert nonbelievers or the uninitiated so I don't care that they know who it is before they hear a song. Sometimes one is impressed and the response is "not bad."

I'll play:

  • Peach--for the swagger
  • 3 Chains O' Gold--for the arrangement skill and huge electric guitar
  • Xemplify--for quintet instrumental play; kinda kool, almost like jazz!
  • Dionne--for The Blues
  • So Far, So Pleased--'cause I LIKE IT
  • Arboretum--for the Princely keyboards
  • Big Fun (from the NPG)--for the FUNK
  • Clouds--stuff of today

There are so many gems to share, according to people's taste.

For starters, play anything but HITNRUN.

Several friends of mine started to dig Prince after hearing his songs in my house or car.

The ones they usually like are:

  • Betcha by Golly Wow (even though it's a cover)
  • Man O' War
  • She Loves Me 4 Me
  • The Marrying Kind
  • Call My Name
  • Fallinlove2nite (with Zoey)
  • The Greatest Romance
  • 1000 Xs & Os (the HNR version)
  • Clouds
  • U Know
  • Family Name (an edited version I did, starting on "Mirror, mirror what U see...")
  • Vicki Waiting (the live one from NPGMC)
  • Dark
  • Shhh
  • I Wanna be Your Lover
  • LoveSexy
  • The Beautiful Ones
  • Anna Stesia (from ONA Live)
  • Eye Hate U

I've had great reactions to Crimson and Clover with the 'alternative' crowd. But like Lovesexy4all says, I don't tell 'em it's Prince until after they've rocked out to the song. Then they're like, "really? That was Prince? Who was playing guitar?" lol

Probably not the obvious songs/albums...I have had friends in the past that hated Prince, for myself it was ATWIAD that really sparked my interest, wasn't a fan at the time of Purple Rain, 1999, Sign O The Times...I listend to ATWIAD at the time Batman was released.

Another friend it was actually the NPG album Exodus, and another friend the album Come.
