it is kind of cool how he manages to sound sort of different on most of his tracks. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

his best instrument | |

He's got one of the widest range in pure tones and he shapes those in so many ways, plus all the squeals and shouts, AND studio trickery.
When he sings harmonies on some tracks it's like they're different backup singers, it's really true he's kind of a vocal chameleon,
So I don't if he's literally the most versatile, but he sure is one of the best at vocal versatility.

if he aint the most versatile, he's definitely on the short list

He's so good naturally, which is even more of a shame since Josh got the studio keys. His voice has never been buried by as much b.s. as on HitNRun. Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. More info at https://www.facebook.com/TMATSPodcast/

Lots of artists cover as many styles as Prince has. Do they do it as well? No, not in my opinion. Prince's vocal abilities are astounding. That's the thing.. none of those guys can pull off as many styles as well as Prince (expect maybe TTD who i hadn't thought of).. but then again could TTD pull off a Bob sieger type song vocally like Prince did on Purple Rain? I doubt it. He's still pretty versatile when I think about it tough. I might rank him number 2 after Prince. And Van Hunt to me isn't a great singer in any genre. He's passable in all of them imo As for Mike Patton i have no clue who this is so I'll hold judgement on him [Edited 10/10/15 6:34am]

LMAO @ Barry Gibb..
versatile?...i only heard him use the chipmunk falsetto and maybe the occasional tenor...singing dance/pop songs and radio ballads...no funk or soul or jazz stylings...or rapping either....

Yea.. this isn't really the best style for Prince to demonstrate his singing ability.. [Edited 10/8/15 19:46pm]

I gotta agree. The singer on When Doves Cry sounds like a totally different artist than the one on For You and Soft & Wet. Or Sometimes it Snows in April and Insatiable. It's really quite remarkable. As far as versatility on vocals he's really in a class by himself.

You really should listen to more Barry Gibb. You really don't think To Love Somebody and How Can You Mend a Broken Heart are soul or Jive Talkin' is funk? Nights on Broadway has a soul song in the middle of a R&B/Funk song. Liste
Just listen to Main Course. Barry sings lead on most songs (pretty much everything except Country Lanes and about half of Come On Over). Listen ot Fanny Be Tender on that same album - there are couple of spots where there are harmonies with his brothers, but for the most part that is all Barry. [Edited 10/8/15 23:29pm]

Nobody here has heared of Marvin Gaye or Ella Fitzgerald? Just because they never made a rock album, doesn't make them any worse as singers. And what Bobby McFerrin can do with his voice is amazing. I've never heared Prince do any scatting, for instance. [Edited 10/9/15 0:28am]

Didnt he do some scatting (sort of) at the montreux 2009 shows whilst playing his guitar at the same time? "I aint about to argue with BB King but...". Never heard him try again so maybe he thought it was an experiment that he didnt quite manage to pull off.

I agree that Barry Gibb is an amazing singer. i actually prefer the beegees when he is singing in his lower register. Listen to songs off of 'high civilsation' and you hear the power in his voice. Also on 'size isnt everything' - there is a song that he duetted with michael jackson around 2002 or something and he completly out sings MJ, sings all over him.

For Whom the Bell Tolls (the full version, not the single/video edit) from Size is one of the best songs of the 1990s by anyone.

its an incredible song. Its one of my favourite all time songs. Guitar work is amazing, the drama is amazing and the vocals as usual a perfect. I have to agree it is a great great song.

Great singer, one of my personal favorites, but no he can't sing everything. He's a better musician than singer imo, more versatile, more relaxed and just overall more genius in that sense. As of recent years, (2012-2014) his vocals were also sounding quite flat, not as rich as they used to. He can't do broadway/classical/musical nor standard jazz songs... He does rock, funk, pop, r&b exceptionally tho. When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace -Jimi Hendrix

Lmao! Really? In the video of that song, Barry is looking at MJ with amazement... MJ is probably one of the most versatile singers(he's done it all from bubblegum pop in the late 60s, to funk/disco, pop ballads, classical pieces etc) didnt want to bring him up, because we are discussing Prince right now. It is a shame that Prince never did we are the world, it would have been amazing to compare him to the rest of the artists on there as far as vocals, tonality, pitch etc.... I never heard anyone say Prince has perfect pitch either, would be interesting to hear someone discuss his vocals more in-depth.
