They're both amazing singers. This is apples to oranges.

he can sing Rock, Funk, pop, rnb..as we all know

who else can do that?

[Edited 10/8/15 10:40am]

The songs may be classed as pop or rnb but you can't class the vocals as such.

If you listen to Prince sing you actually find he is quite limited and actually sounds very much the same on all of his tracks.

He certainly has his own style and his own sound, but that is it. Nothing more, nothing less.

lol wink lol

D'Angelo is better than MJ.
Better at releasing an underwhelming album every 20 years.

2 pages into this thread and nobody has mentioned Lionel Richie. I'm disappointed.

MJ was a better singer than Prince but I can't say he's more versatile since he hasn't covered the range of styles P has.

Bowie and Prince are similar vocally, in a WAY. They're not usually called the greatest vocalists of all time in the league of Whitney Houston or George Michael, but they have very wide ranges that people would kill to have. My twocents

The same can be said for those who think Prince actually is the most versatile singer there is. Prince musically has covered many different styles of music but in terms of singing he really is not that varied. As another user said, Prince can sing but his singing style remains constant.

Stevie and Lionel (the latter in particular) are singers with truly versatile voices who can effortlessly adjust their vocals for various genres of music.

or some people have listened to the singers they listed a lot more than others on here and are bringing some perspective to the conversation, thus enhancing it. You can either look into why they listed the person they did or stick to what could very well be faulty preconceived notations about those singers.

For instance, I brought up Barry Gibb in this thread, he's only one of the most successful singer/songwriter/producers of all time in a carrer that spans 6 decades and includes disco/R&B/soul/pop/country/rock/folk rock. As a songwriter, only Lennon/McCartney have written more Billboard hit 100 #1 songs than his 16. As a singer, he has performed every style of music I just listed and more.

George Martin produced the Bee Gees for the Sgt Pepper movie. In making the album, he asked Barry Gibb to keep singing the same part of one song. He didn't tell Barry waht he was doing, but he was recording multiple tracks to make it sound like there were multiple singers like Prince does on songs like 7, only Barry's voice was so perfectly on key it didn't work until after he told Barry what he was trying to do. Barry thought they were just redoing the one vocal and was nailing it every time.

Among singers I have heard of, I would say he definitely is...most versatile, sure...but still I can't seem to find my favorite voice in the wide range. I think most of the time I almost don't even care about the vocal devliery anyway. kind of ironic...

His version of Brecht's Remembering Marie A. Who Can I Be Now. This Is Not America. The 1970 version of The Prettiest Star. Scream Like a Baby. I could go on and on and on. The notion that Bowie isn't a versatile singer or just sounds like a poltergeist (WTF...no offense, RJOrion!) is so false.

Indeed.

I dare anyone to listen to Bowie's It's Gonna Be Me and not hear/feel the same greatness and vulnerability as Prince's Another Lonely Christmas.

Because Prince has to be the best at everything according to many people on here.

I know this is a Prince fansite and tbh this is one of the more impartial sites I've come across but there's still a good amount of uptight elitists who think Prince defines perfection and if someone speaks ill of him in any way shape or form then they lash out by undermining artists not named Prince as well as the people who like said artists.

The question posed by the originator of the thread asked most versatile singers ever...thereby, inviting comparisons and soliciting opinions from others...not everybody likes everything...people should be allowed to not like certain things (and express it), without it having an emotional effect on those who like those same things...im not one of those people who get offended when Prince or EW&F or The Police or Brandy get criticized or clowned in comment sections,..

Why question the comparative nature of this discussion when the subject itself is comparative?

I love that version. How's that box set? I'm tempted by it despite the fact that it has only one song that would be new for me. smile

I have at least half the content already but I don't know how much of my stuff are the most recent remasters.

-

The 1st review on Amazon (there are currently 5) is what convinced me to buy it and that reviewer gives a much better review than I ever could regarding the technical aspects.

It's Bowie so I had to have it and there's a 100+ page book included.

-

I owe you thanks because earlier in this thread you mentioned the song It's Gonna Be Me.

So I searched for it on youtube and it was included on the re-release of Young Americans and my CD is only the original and doesn't have that track.

So I bought the digital version of YA and listened to IGBM dozens of times since. hug
