An album with this song, Stare, and some other organic funk would be amazing. Keeping my fingers crossed!

First stab at the lyrics:

How did we get here, how did we get this far?

How did we get so high, high enough to touch the stars?

If you could wouldn't you like to fly?

Just because ain't no reason not to try

chorus:

Free yourself and save a place for me, oh yeah

Life is what you can make it so be the best that you can be

Now's the time to take your place in history

Close your mind, the happy and the free

Look at where we came from, how far we are today

We the people will get the final say

Third apartment from the sun nothing left to be, no

No need to hide and run, heaven on earth right here

(that's why you've got to)

chorus

Love yourself so we can love you too.

We need your help, there's so much we can do.

Free, free yourself, free yourself

I think it's "yours and mine, da happy n free" music.

For all time I am with you, you are with me.

OK I know this makes no sense...and I may be the only one hearing this but I have listened to this over and over again and I hear the lyric as

"if you could...wouldn't you like to die"

instead of

"if you could...wouldn't you like to fly"

which is of course more positve...and fits the song...but I swear that is what I am hearing - which would be an interesting lyric to say the least...

I really like this track after hearing it in it's (abbreviated lol) entirety. It is definitely on the right track as far as music I want to hear from Prince... Once again, my major complaint is that it is too restrained and builds up to only be cut off, leaving the listener frustrated. Much like unfulfilled sex. LOL I think this song would sound wonderful performed live when Prince lets down his guard and just goes with it...

Funky track. Sounds like something from 1985/1986. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a reworked vault track.

Yea here's hoping there is an extended version that will either be on the album or available separately somehow - you know they are going to extend this into a jam live so let's hear it!

Man, I hope so! I know there are more to some of these songs than the abbreviated versions that we've heard. And just in case someone thinks I'm an old fogey, I loved the live versions of Fixupurlife and FunknRoll I heard performed last year. wink

It would totally work as the closer leading to the encore...after some soloing and jammin, get the crowed all frienzied up in a 'Free!...Free urself!" Chant as he tries to duck out. While he may have freed his audience up...mickeyfickey, we paid, and u ain't free till we say so! He'd hafta come out and do a handful more. We'll save a space for u when we say u done!

I'm kinda embarrassed at how long it's been on repeat. It got interrupted only twice for a half spin of Baltimore and one spin of Rock n' Roll Love Affair.

Last time I listened to a song so obsessively was RRLA as a matter of fact.

There was one version of RnRLA that I really loved more than the original. I'll have to dig that out now. Seriously, I wish he would just put together a raw live recording of some of these recent GOOD songs and let loose...like he did in the old days. With an excellent live band, of course. With all the scrapes and bruises for us to hear. It would make all the difference in the world...

Love this song...it's so...Princey.

THIS. Also, sounds like he wrote it around time of writing "Baltimore" (which I personally think is super pretty). But does have a more 80's Revolution sensibility in there too. Very interesting melange of classic and 2015 Prince. It's like P. released one of his own Vault tracks as an 'official' bootleg. Quite a treat--Thank u Prince!

nice enough song. but i'll save it for later, i'm still on Phase 1 time smile

plus, i don't want to overplay it or even listen to it again because if
it's really on Phase 2, it's nice to have the album be fresh as can be,

without having listened to "free urself" and "stare" too often already.

I'm going to give it a rest now too. smile

I'm not sure you were referring to me with your comment, but if you were you clearly haven't ever read any of my posts. I'm one of probably a handful of fans here (who post comments) that appreciate Prince's songs from every single album from every era, with extreme consistency and zero apology. Unlike many commenters on this website, I do not equate the quality of any of his music with the perception of his work as seen through the lens of sales and chart performances, or whether it's a studio release or leaked bootleg, or the opinions of the others that too often seem to be more concerned with the color of the frame, than the artistry of the painting. I like his songs when the music moves me, which is nearly always. In my comment, I said the track sounded like he released it as an official bootleg from the Vault--not because I liked it or because it has an 80's throwback sound, but because the track's production quality sounds less refined than his studio releases--almost unfinished. Like a bootleg.

.

I appreciate your outrage, but watch where you point that thing. You're aiming it at the wrong person by completely mischaracterizing where i was coming from in my previous post.

Not necessarily referred to you, but to a few comments I've already seen around from different users. It's always the same story, if people dig something, then it must be from the 80s stuff he has in the vault, because Prince nowadays is not capable of anything good (they say...)...

Thank you for clarifying. Actually, I quite agree with you, now that I understand what you meant. I picked up on that too reading through the comments in this thread. "Free Yourself" reminds me of "Baltimore", which was panned mercilessly here in the org. Completely unwarranted IMO. But get a similar sound and mix in a Revolution type of vibe, and suddenly it's all that and a bag of chips and the best thing he's done in years. I can't fault anyone for being nostalgiac for the 80's sound, but sometimes I think the nostalgia blinds them from so many treasures that P. creates in the present.

.

Sorry if I came off as defensive before. I take my connection with his music rather seriously LOL.

.

The positivity here is wonderful to see. A good bit disorienting too. Like I woke up on opposite day in some alternate universe.... cool

I was just about to post that I really don't hear a "Revolution 80s" sound to this song at all--and I just listened to it a few times. Not only that, but I was around in the 80s for the original 80s sound. If that means anything. LOL Which it doesn't. This song sounds more recent to me--within the last few years. I could be wrong, of course. Or maybe not. lol But I like what I hear and want more of it.
