I dont see any similarity in style at all. But HNR is a much better listening experience. NPS used to be the floater in Prince's catalogue that just wouldnt flush away, but over the years he has managed to out-do himself and added turds even more buoyant and unflushable - Im specifically thinking of MPLS, PE and PE. Im at least liking the new direction he is taking, even if the execution isnt quite there yet.

There's no contest as far as I'm concerned: Newpower Soul is one of my favorite Prince albums (I'm not a McCartney/Springsteen fan, I'm a funkateer, remember lol ) and I find it VASTLY superior to Hitnrun.

I was actually listening to the Tidal version of TCI and right now I'm listening to The Slaughterhouse and in between both I listened to Hitnrun and damn, the funkiness and sophistication in P's music from the so-called plastic years was amazing and still blows me away just as much as what he dis during the so-called classic years, Hitnrun sounds totally flat to my ears in comparison to anything from Emancipation to TCI/TS.

Notwithstanding 3 top-notch songs, New Power Soul is the most unlistenable album ever released by an artist of his stature.

Such a diverse catalog - "1999", "Rainbow Children","Parade","Hitnrun", "One Nite Alone", "Diamonds and Pearls", "News", "Newpower Soul"...

"Newpower Soul" doesn't strive for greatness, it's just a collection of plastic funk. Josh Welton strives to make a great album out of "Hitnrun", and fails big, but it's a quirky addition to the catalog that's gonna age very badly with its noises

Bwahahaha ... LOL

Anything you ever post again will be seen in this light and will not be taken serious ever again : ) Only joking of course ...

But anyway, difficult to grasp that NPS could be anyone's favourite album, I am amazed.

For me NPS was a turning point in my view on Prince's musisscianship and I guess I have never really recovered from the shock of this absolute low point. I remember standing in a record store with the cover in my hands and listening to the music and feeling vicarious shame ... : )

Newpower Soul shits on HitNRun IMO. Let's compare the songs I like:

NPS:
Mad Sex
UYIMAA
WYLS
Come On
The One
Wasted Kisses

HitNRun: bored2

I think the only way in which they compare to each other is that they both seem to be "minor" Prince albums thrown together and released quickly as opposed to "major" albums having big artistic or commercial intentions. (Other minor Prince albums would be TBA, Come, C&D, The Truth, Planet Earth, 20Ten...)

Back to NPS vs HnR;

I think NPS has highers highs ( The One, Mad Sex, Come On) but much lower lows (Shoo-Bed-Ooh (EWW), Push It Up, etc..). HnR is more listenable and just less offensive to my ears when listening to it as a whole.

Eh? Really? Have you actually listened to these albums?

NPS is an underrated masterpiece. Certainly a great Prince album - even though credited as an NPG album.

NPS is a really great album, a truly funky album - and a great campaign (but I'm trying not to be bias)!

Couldn't agree more. Despite these songs it is a form of torture to listen to that album.

I can't agree there. Newpower Soul has its flaws, but I actually find it one of his more listenable albums - Curiously, I probably listen more to Newpower Soul than several of his albums that I would rate as "better" albums! As a horn player myself, Newpower Soul is one of his most horn-infused albums. The Hornheadz are all over it, killin' it. And like you said, there are 3 top-notch songs - "Come On", "The One" and "Wasted Kisses".

As for my thoughts on HITNRUN, I will save that for our Peach & Black Podcast review...

The lows on HitnRun are much lower than the lows on NPS, so I have to give NPS the nod. Until HitnRun I had never listened to a Prince album that I couldn't even make it through some of the tracks.
