I think he has 2-3 Top Shelf albums in the vault-- based on the bootlegs we have heard. I don't think we are going to get many/any official releases in our lifetime & the way he has ensured the next generation doesn't know he exists, I don't think there will be much of a market for the Vault. The Vault is almost a monument to hoarding, and mental illness. With no future.

But here's my theory, deep down inside Prince does look back in time, maybe not a lot because maybe he doesn't want to. But I think he looks back more than we think. You take a look at his recent set list or his usual set lists, they're a hit-concerts, so obviously when he's doing those songs, there has to be some type of flashback. And for the set list, he picked it so subconsciously maybe his mind looks back to the past more than Prince knows. And also everyone knows that throughout the years Prince says things to the media to keep us off-guard... to spark 'controversy'... So who knows... kae510 said: Honestly i believe P rerecorded/ reworked and released many of those songs from the vault. These so called new tracks may be new to us , but not so new at all . Here's what he said in Mojo April last year:"If you hear a bootleg from 85, it means you're not hearing the finished version." So I'm sure Prince regards the Vault stuff as work in progress, to be finished when he thinks he needs to. So the 2011/12 (I forgot the exact year) version of Extraloveable is, in his mind anyway, the definitive version, not the one from 1982, so there's no need to release that.

It's very likely that WB prevented Prince to release anything from the vault after 2001, at a time when he was interested in doing it. I think we won't know exactly what happens, if anything, before Prince is free from his new obligations towards WB (he owns the masters but can't use them outside of WB, so he's basically still tied to them). Time is a great healer. I'd imagine a lot of those vault tracks remind him of some emotional outpouring, some good and some bad that he just wanted to forget.
I think he's starting to get to a point in his life where he can look back without the emotion and release the tracks so I'm hopeful one day I'll get the original Empty Room and Old Friends For Sale etc.

I don't think the timing has ever been right for releasing "a collection of outtakes from the Newpower Soul era" or "10 unreleased tracks from the 3121 sessions", both fans and critics would have reacted with a huge WTF saying "this is not what we want, we want material from the classic years!". I think reasonably, post WB outtakes can only be released alternatively with WB years outtakes. Look at what happened as early as 1998 with Crystal Ball: everyone moaned that the 30 tracks were 10 80's tracks and 20 mid-90's tracks. Prince could have released a 2 CD set of Gold/Come outtakesbut only if he'd released a 3 CD set of 80's outtakes right before that would the fans have said "yeah cool". Furthermore... . Yes, P uses vault tracks every now and then. But only when the track is not too 'dirty'. . This means that certain vault tracks will not see the light of day during his lifetime and will be inherited by Larry or whoever is alloed to manage his estate. Well, judging by the best material from the 3121 era, which appears to include not only 3121 but also much of Lotusflow3r, I for one would like to hear more if there is unheard stuff of similar quality eg Colonised Mind and 3121 (the track).
Personally, I sense we've already heard most of the best stuff from the 'classic era' (say '82-'87) on official and unofficial releases; there might be another album or two's worth of good/ great unheard studio stuff from the 80s, but I suspect there's unknown material from 1990 onwards that may not be quite as mind-blowing as say, the original '85 Empty Room, but really deserves to be heard by us rabid fans, whatever the artist himself may think.
I for one would love to hear any cool outtakes from The Rainbow Children/ Xenophobia/ NEWS era as much as anything else, as P and the band were on fire back then . [Edited 3/27/15 12:27pm] [Edited 3/27/15 12:27pm]

I think he totally has a plan for it, after he's no longer on this earth. I think he is smart enough to know that the vultures would swoop so I think he knows what he's going to do with it.

There is at least one classic album sat in there. In my opinion he could put together an album of material from 1985-86 never released that would at least equal Sign O The Times.

I think there should be something like what he did with "Crystal Ball". It could be "Crystal Ball 2" or whatever.. He release what he wants on there and then he doesn't have to remaster any of his albums... So it will be like a compromise. Perhaps this compromise could work ”The people that will end up defining ‘Hate Speech Laws’ are the very people you don’t want to define the Hate Speech Laws” — Jordan B Peterson

I've lost hope that any significant collection from the Vault will ever be released. His stance of not looking back and his now vs then religious beliefs gives me the opinion that Prince is ashamed of much of what his past music had to say. Compare Controversy lyrics with The Gold Standard's. It's like he forgets that it's as much about the journey as it is the goal. imo - We buy every official release but he's allowing the bootlegger's to kick his...

a good way to 're-purpose' vault tracks would be to do a triple album box set from different eras - one from the 80s (Roadhouse Garden)/90's (The Dawn)/00s (Madrid 2 Chicago) for instance.
basically package 'lesser' stuff with more sort after material.
