Oh course, I don't disagree with that. The reaction to the events of Ferguson were larger than the one person who's incident caused the outrage. That reaction was based on something the people there felt was systematic. Anyhow, I'm not really a fan of this topic, I just wanted to point out that our perspectives on any given matter come from the context from which we're seeing them from, and if we don't take those contexts into consideration we'll never understand where other's are coming from.

The books and albums part of this statement are topics less beaten to death so I'd prefer to talk about them.

Yes! That was collective consciousness Nationwide & Worldwide.

I'll agree to that in regards to people not understanding what he said and what it meant. It was a very straight forward statement that has NATIONWIDE/WORLDWIDE impact. In fact it was moving to know that many countries and cultures during and after the protest (and even still) fully understand the meaning of those words and the struggle of not only just Black People but OPPRESSED PEOPLE around the world. Beautiful

Not to hijake this tread...but rioting in protest to injustice is nothing new nor is it just isolated to the Black Community. EVERYONE READ THIS WITH OPENED EYES...I do not condone violence of any kind...but in regards to Watts, Ferguson, Turkey etc I do understand it. Sometimes those oppressed to the limit have to get full attention to the severity of the issues they face.

Again if social injustices did not exist, there would be no need for protests. I am so glad many are not falling for the bs that some are trying to sell, and glad Prince said what he said, because it sure ruffled some feathers and made some people question their conscience. Thank goodness for the people who get it. Those are the ones who will be the ones to enforce change, not those who hold racist and generalized and negative views of a specific group.

The thing is that it's not even Prince's words. People are acting like Prince created this statement. lol

Yes, but there is a BIG difference in protesting with a purpose intent and goal/desired outcome, vs wanton destruction. I remember a clip of an African-American man living in the destroyed neighborhood saying "After you all leave and go back to your homes, who's going to help us clean up this mess"

Not trying to over/understate his line, but I think too many people are putting too much onto Prince's words that night.

.

But you said something that caught my attention, when I was chatting with a woman about the rioting in Ferguson, I said "what about the business/home owners (black or otherwise) whose places are being destroyed, who might not be able to rebuild, who's individual or family lives depend on that. And the response I got was 'well in the revolution sometimes that happens sometimes people have to get the hard end for the cause' I just couldn't believe what I was reading. -that is the seed planted of a criminal.

I'll agree to that in regards to people not understanding what he said and what it meant. It was a very straight forward statement that has NATIONWIDE/WORLDWIDE impact. The other thing is that it's not even Prince's words. People are acting like Prince created this statement.

.

I understand reaction to injustice. Look at Dr King and the Civil Rights movement(no rioting, no looting(stealing robbing) no destruction of 'black owned business, religious centers, homes'...

And I know rioting is something that humans do and have always done, but most of the time it's pointless, and achieves nothing but destruction.

vs rioting looting and destruction of neigborhoods and business, many owned by African-Americans

to obtain justice for Michael Brown they destroyed black owned homes and business (senseless and purposeless) and any business rebult and any clean up was not done/helped by those rioters, many who did not even live there.

.

The sad thing is, people wait for something like this to happen to now want to make a difference. It's the worst time. If all this mattered before Michael Brown set into motion the events that got him killed, then why not dilligently work with the whole community of residents, business owners, police etc to make some changes. And I'm just not supportive of using a criminal as a poster boy for justice.

.

But again the reaction tickles me, like Prince uttered these words out of divine inspiration

You are 100% correct, of course. It takes a very naive person to believe that all protesters are motivated by "social injustice". Many protesters are nothing more than opportunists who show up because it gives them a chance to destroy property and loot without repercussions. Want a free big screen TV or a computer? Head on down to Ferguson or wherever else protests are happening. And it's been proven there are "professional protesters" who are being paid to protest.

Right. And one thing I noticed in watching this unfold is that people should expected when there are these kinds of protests that there are going to be the thugs and selfish criminals who will 'join along side' 'the movement' and take advantage of it. I just don't think these kinds of protests work anymore

.

Because the first assembling of protesters were compliant and peaceful as the media and police/sheriff dept noted. But that it was people who joined up from outside of this assembled group that hijacked the purpose and began looting robbing and rioting. So now everyone looks like criminals. How does stealing beauty products and liters of pepsi and flat screens help? BOOKS MATTER ALBUMS MATTER

.

And so when that verdict came back and again people assembled to protest, I expected the same wanton destruction to take place. And it did. There has to be a different way, so that those who really are invested in bring the community together and making changes for the better are not overrun by thugs who don't give a dam about anyone but themselves. The quote 'Black Lives Matter' has to be thrown back into their faces, because if it did, they would not destroy communities business and homes of black people/lives.

Lol.... Actually what really needs to be explained to the ones 'angry' over what Prince said, is that there is no reason to be angry. Furthermore did I say those were his words? I basically explained that he related Black Lives matter as they are viewed by some as having less value, just as books and albums that he mentioned, are valued less today.

I went further with another orger who said Prince should have said 'all lives'instead of saying 'like books and Black lives'. My question is, why should he have changed what he meant to say, because some are uncomfortable with what he said? Why are they really angry is really the question. Why not ask those orgers why they are angry? I am correct in stating it was clear why he equated Black lives as having value like books and albums. Nothing else needs to be explained about that. His statement was pretty clear. I'm comfortable with it. How about you? Lol.

When I mentioned in an earlier post that the Grammys focus was in regards to raising social awareness. It was pretty clear with many artists, displaying 'hands up' to symbolize the recent shootings of unarmed, Black males, what that represented in their performances, and Prince would have had no other reason to equate Black lives being of value as books and albums, if it was not also in regards to the current atmosphere of police brutality or racial profiling. Seriously, do you really think the 'hands up' reference displayed behind many of the performers was just some form of news choreography or in regards to exactly what I said it was symbolizing? Lol

It takes a naive person to believe that all protests are about opportunists joining in to start trouble. One can be persuaded by the media's focus on the looters to distract their audience from the purpose behind the protests. A common tactic, the media has been doing for years and fools and those in denial will lap it up like it is their last meal, because the majority of the time, they believe anything the media serves them, because they fear the power behind what protests will bring, and that is called 'change'.

See now that wasn't so difficult was it? Thank goodness for those who don't let the media bs be their guide to social change. Those on the front lines taking the criticism for standing up against racial injustices are the real heroes with no fear. #standingupagainstinjusticematters. smile

Prince sees just fine imo and he might be making this statement to wake up any one who really don't get it. He's been a Champ for Love4oneanother for decades and why would he feel that way if he didn't care or still saw color? Living off the past? Prince is way ahead of the crowd in lots of ways, and even if it helped one person have a new perspective, he spoke the Truth. It could bring more attention to a worthy cause, just because he's Prince and he said it. cool king

Nobody said all protests are only about opportunists, you're looking to argue a point that was never expressed.

And as bad as the media is, they reported live from Ferguson how some protesters were trying to stop the troublemakers from burning and looting. As with most protests, the majority is peaceful and has good intentions ... but it's the troublemakers that get most of the attention, and ruin the opportunity to bring positive change. It's the troublemakers, and the destruction & looting they cause, that is broadcast across the world and fuel the FALSE negative stereotypes.

What's even more amusing is when people who hang on and post every lyric that Prince wrote in the eighties all of a sudden ain't too crazy about what he has to say these days. It was like that during the WB fight, it was like that in the Rainbow Children era, too. JW conversion, etc.

Suddenly everybody wanna cherry pick, diminish, dismiss and devalue what they don't happen to agree with. SSDD.

I am so glad that Prince follows his own mind and don't give a damn who don't like it.

it just seems so convoluted. the way the FCC ruledf media allows the lies to be accepted as the truth.

so when someone like prince makes a "black lives matter" statement,, he's (seemingly) percieved by many as being a radical.

Lol..Dude if the stereotyped and racist views were not slready embedded in the minds of racists, there would be no protests against racial injustices. You know how the media gets their audience glued to the tv? Show them whatever chaos you can find within any peaceful protest to keep the audience glued to the channel, and get those ratings hiked to bring in advertising dollars. People have a right to protest. Don't be so sold on the looting the media brainwashes their audience with to distract from the real reasons for protesting. So before you tell someone to clean their backyard, make sure you empty your trash.

In regards to the topic, if you're you're angry about what Prince said, there is nothing anyone here can do about that. He said what he said, and all the complaining about it won't change his comment.

Lol [Edited 2/12/15 8:46am]

Absolutely agree with you. I really think some folks missed the point of his comment. I still don't get the anger from some, when all Prince did was tell the truth.

The thing is that it's not even Prince's words. People are acting like Prince created this statement. lol

Yes, but there is a BIG difference in protesting with a purpose intent and goal/desired outcome, vs wanton destruction. I remember a clip of an African-American man living in the destroyed neighborhood saying "After you all leave and go back to your homes, who's going to help us clean up this mess"

we were talking about the general reactions. Whichever way, I'm just saying those are not Prince's words. Don't make it personal.
My comments are also to those angry, which I've already directed it to, why get up in arms about what Prince said. Remember?

.
I've said over and over no one needs to get up in arms about what Prince nor fall down in worship because of what Prince said. Which is not even his own words.

.

No one knows Prince's full reasoning, and I've said it over and over. Sometimes he goes into explaination, sometimes he says things he regrets, sometimes he says things and you kind remember Prince has and always has had his own 'purple philosophy of the world'

Absolutely agree with you. I really think some folks missed the point of his comment.

But that is actually where I'm focusing on.

No one know what the point of his comment is...

For us to make it the word of God (OH Prince said it so that validates 'my' arguement' or to make it a comment of division, should be neither (Prince shouldn't have said it destroys his fan base)
it just shouldn't be from either side

.

When Prince said women in Muslim societies were happy being covered head to toe and not having a choice. What do we do with that. Do we know what he means? And should we disect his words. Because in that case if I did, I would look at Prince differently.

I don't see where anyone is angry over what Prince said....I think it's misguided, but am in no way angry at Prince for saying it. He intended for it to come off as "pro black".

If you dig deeper, you see the true meaning.

Prince has proven time and time again that his heart is in the right place.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Except that you personally spend a huge amount of time posting articles, lyrics and various statements Prince has made in the past that YOU agree with alllll the time and nobody every accuses you of treating it as if it's the word of God, do they?

What he says only has meaning when you agree but if he says something that has meaning to others then you feel some intense need to diminish it?

You not caring for or claiming not know what the point of his comment is means that NOBODY does??? hmm

Alllrighty then......

If this or that comment bothers you it's fine to say so but let's not have double standards.

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Was Prince trying to emulate Osho Rajneesh at the Grammys? - The ...

“Albums — you remember those? They still matter.

Like books and black lives, they still matter,” Prince said,

referencing the motto “Black Lives Matter”

the phrase became popular following the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.

MARCH 29, 2012 Prince is seen court-side at a basketball game (like the Lakers?) donning a black hoodie with large scripted letters in red. The caption simply read “Suspicious?” Brilliant!

prince wore a hoodie during the T Martin protest >>>>>>> rose

really, we all know he did not create the phrase "BLACK LIVES MATTER." however it is Prince'right to express his feelings. those who judge him for caring for the lives of young men being killed and brutalized by thug cops and making a point to express it, need to gtf outta heah.

try going and listen to his songs. > the ones you paid your money for> the ones that you enjoy>

and remember Prince is not your man, he is (freely) his own man > not yours.

“Transracial is a term that has long since been defined as the adoption of a child that is of a different race than the adoptive parents,” : https://thinkprogress.org...fb6e18544a

In regards to the topic, if you're you're angry about what Prince said, there is nothing anyone here can do about that. He said what he said, and all the complaining about it won't change his comment.

I've defended what Prince said only like 3 or 4 times, maybe I should make it into a sig. lol

"Never let nasty stalkers disrespect you. They start shit, you finish it. Go down to their level, that's the only way they'll understand. You have to handle things yourself."
