It does feel a bit silly now to have even been excited about this entire AOA/PLEC/PR30 era, considering how quickly he seems to have lost interest in all of it. This has to be a record for him. Even 20Ten, which didn't see a release in his home country, had some exstensive touring behind it.

He did one SNL appearance which has now been milked twice for promo videos. We all know Prince has a much stronger work ethic than that. WTF happened?!

I just dont see how WB would go into another contract with Prince and have all these escape clauses that Prince can utilise to back out of the deal. WB surely tied this one up nice and tight knowing his history. Which leads me to believe that either a) the remasters are coming or b) Prince is getting his ass sued in a very large way.

Maybe WB will end up owning PP and Prince will have to start making music with passion and energy once again to try and put food on the table.

Just calm down everyone. Maybe you have some old photos of yourself from 30 years ago. Would you want to print those? Maybe some or all of what you thought about 30 years ago would make you cringe today. People change. Priorities change. Tastes really change. The same consideration should be extended to Prince.

Come back to this thread later. You never know what might happen in the next 7 months...

I agree. It's time to be patient and let time work things out. A lot of people sound like spoiled brats around here. He has been busy. He toured all over with 3EG for the last two years. Two new albums. He got his masters back. Look at his past history. He lives and breathes music. He is music. Give him time and let things unfold. I am sure he will be back with some goodies for all of us. We don't know what is going on behind the scenes. The quietness may have nothing to do with him. It may. No one knows for sure. So let's give the benefit of the doubt and sit back and wait. It's the polite and respectful thing to do.

prince is backwards .. the whole 3eg tour should have started after the record release .. not 2 years before and then stop abruplty as soon as the records hit

as for the pr remaster .. prince is clearly pouting .. better give him some time to heal his bruised ego .. must be tough when the world tells you you are the greatest but the record sales tell you they are all just kissing your ass but nobody really likes the music

prince ego be pretty big .. he talks about it non stop in his songs .. the epic double flop on wb had to hurt ..

Right on, vinaysfunk!

He's already revolutionized music once. Maybe he's about to do it again. I can't wait to see what the next few months and years hold. There are many good things that could be said about Prince and one of them is just as you said: He is music. He can't just be content with not releasing music.

It's pretty obvious what happened...Prince is repeating his folly of the 90's. He's obviously at odds with WB yet again......

I'm (finally) reading Ronin Ro's Prince bio (and it's a trainwreck in places), and I just encountered this:

.

Purple Rain should have been different. With the film’s anniversary approaching, Warner Home Video planned a twentieth-anniversary DVD release. The company first released it on DVD in 1997, as one of the earliest products in this format, but fans viewed that version — no extras, and visuals trimmed to standard TV size — as primitive. Warner hoped to change this with a twenty-seven-dollar reissue.

.

Warner convinced Wendy, Lisa, Jellybean Johnson, director Magnoli, producer Cavallo, and screenwriter William Blinn to grant interviews. They also included a documentary about the club First Avenue, MTV’s coverage of the July 1984 premiere, and eight music videos.

.

Now, executives asked Prince to contribute a commentary track. Though most film creators didn’t charge for these, Jon Bream wrote in the Minneapolis Star Tribune that Prince “reportedly demanded a fee to participate in the project.” He did so, Bream added, during his most successful year as a concert performer, and despite Warner planning to pay royalties for the reissue.

.

Further, Prince supposedly encouraged other cast members to seek payment. In the end, Morris Day and Apollonia didn’t do commentaries, either. Bream frowned on the decision in print. Prince was wise to avoid the other two DVDs “but his failure to participate in the reissue of his first movie leaves a black cloud over Purple Rain.”

.

I'm not sure there are any escape clauses?

There is no chance WB are just handing over his masters. That wouldn't happen.

I suspect his new WB contract is one albums masters handed back to Prince for each new album handed to WB. Maybe with a ratio of some sort. I also suspect Prince is taking a VASTLY reduced advance or possibly foregoing it completely. Thus explaining the recent videos having the production qualities of a free app. When in the past he's made videos for songs we've never heard because he's a bit bored on a Thursday afternoon.

Prince likely has clauses for artistic freedom, ie he can dissapear to work on other projects. Again however WB really didn't want PlectrumElectrum. Prince had to fight for it. It's not "Prince & 3EG". Perhaps they agreed the release but it's not a "Prince" album thus perhaps not counting towards his masters being handed back.

WB likely has clauses to drive more sales if/when a "new" album tanks. ie 1 of the new albums will be a PR remaster and at least 1 more album will be a "Hits" set. Simply because they're more bankable.

This is all speculation since the details aren't available. However something along those lines is the only possible way both parties could be "happy" with a deal.

Prince already has his masters back.

WB doesn't care anymore about a 30 th anniversary re-release. 2014 is over. Prince released 2 albums that both flopped spectacularly, and he didn't do anything to save them on the charts. So WB understood that even if they re released PR 30th, there won't be any involvement of Prince in promotionning the deluxe set. So why bother ? No matter what is left undone by this deal (worldwide tour, etc.) it's holding back Prince carreer for sure (he didn't do anything since the 2 albums were announced last august)

Of course WB care about milking more money from Purple Rain. They're in the music business. It's what they do. Regardless of if Prince is involved or not. It's his biggest selling record. You think WB are just gonna say "OK Prince we're done with Purple Rain now - you can have it back"?

Prince owes WB some shits ( worldwide tour, reeditions, etc) but he gave them nothing. ANd since the announcement was made on august, Prince has done absolutely nothing, besides SNL. He has not the free reins to do a tour without WB, something he obviously doesn't want

The masters are listed now at NPGMUSIC Publishing or something like that. There was a topic about that here months ago.

Without WB doing nothing, PR sold last year between 75/100 k ex. in the USA. There is a market for sure, but before printing expensive deluxe sets, collector editions ,etc. they must be assured that Prince is involved in promoting it.

From what the insiders said, a worldwide tour was scheduled in order to promote PR. It should have been tv specials events etc. They wanted it to be huge. Prince canceled all those things

Why don't you think they didn't released the PR DELUXE ? THey already have all the materials they need to. They signed a contract, as you know it. They could promote it themselves without Prince. But they know it won't work if Prince is not fully behind the release. Look above what has been said about the 2004 dvd.

With Prince's involvment and on capitalizing of a comeback for the 30th anniversary (and further reeditions on the run), they could have make huge money. We are talking about millions of copies sold in the US alone.

So, maybe Prince on the papers has his masters back but... WB is still holding the money. There is something fishy about this contract.

right... but thats publishing? That doesn't necessarily mean he has his masters back. There is no chance in hell WB have signed ownership back to Prince without first being able to milk what they can from them. They must have that in writing because one of the executives has already said they're looking forward to remasters.

After the shit that went down last time, do you honestly think anyone at WB is going to take Prince on his word?

Without WB doing nothing, PR sold last year between 75/100 k ex. in the USA. There is a market for sure, but before printing expensive deluxe sets, collector editions ,etc. they must be assured that Prince is involved in promoting it.

Not really. If there is genuinely a market for it then Prince doesn't have to do anything. Was it the Hits/1/2/b-sides collection he asked fans not to buy? - That was hugely successful.

What WB wanted and what was actually sheduled are two very different things. ie WB may well be proposing a world tour where he plays the album start to finnish.

I don't think there was a PR DELUXE because Prince wanted to put out new material and WB aren't going to put out 3 Prince albums in a year. Without doubt WB are going to release some form of remaster. Plan A - being with Prince's full support. Plan B being fuck you Prince watch us make more money from Purple Rain than you made from your last 3 Albums.

How much Promo is needed? A few prime time tv screenings of Purple Rain the movie/The Documentary/The VHS Concert... push them to Netflix etc. That reaches more people in one night than a world tour. Plus Prince isn't going to stop playing the hits live anytime soon.

Actually the WB albums are now listed with a (P) NPG, and the (P) denotes the owner of the actual sound recordings, i.e., the masters. They are also listed as under exclusive license to WB--which is likely part of the deal for him regaining ownership--to allow WB to manufacture, distribute, & sell the records/CDs/sound recordings. This would be similar to the licensing deals he had with Sony, Universal, etc. for "Musicology," "3121" etc.

Sometimes they're not even that.

I don't think he's serious when he blows off the idea of remasters and re-issues, though. His concerts mostly highlight his older material--I would suspect he actually really wants to clean them up and re-release them. The delay may just be due to him trying to get the best possible scenerio out of each release and a complete disregard for his fans' wishes.

WB are not going to release any remasters, unless Prince is fully involved. Period. If it was the case, PR deluxe and others would have been already released. They didn't have to wait one year, it's silly. AOA (7 weeks on BB 200) and PLEC (3 weeks on BB 200) flopped terribly, they could have released PR without damaging the sales of these 2 albums.

You really want to use the movie to promote the reissue ? Not only it would have been a bad idea, but it was clearly stated that the movie is not part of the contract. Only music. Like it was clearly stated that Prince owes his masters now.

You think a documentary will have the same impact as of a worldwide tour ? You're not serious...The worldwide tour is the only way to make tons of money for everyone. Without a worldwide tour, there is no reason to promote an album. Of course, some documentaries and tv events are a good way to promote, but they must be tied up with a worldwide tour.

Remember INVINCIBLE ? There was a special tv show-concert broadcast on november 2001 that made 27 millions watchers in the usa, but it didn't really help the album. And without a worldwide tour by MJ, Sony gave up the promotion. That's the way things go in the industry. The scheme is always the same.

Care to share your sources that clearly state this?

As far as I am concerned there has been only one press release regarding the Prince/WB contract. It was not very detailed and nothing has officially been said since. The org has been rife with speculation for months and many, it seems, are confusing that speculation with fact.

Whilst I agree it is doubtful the movie is involved in the contract signed between WB Records and Prince, there is nothing that clearly states thats the case. Likewise the "fact" Prince already has his masters back. As far as I can tell, the only source for this has been taken from is iTunes. I havent heard from either party involved that this is actually the case.

Regardless of that, there has been nothing from either party that clearly states anything other than the original press release stating there will be a PR reissue which will include unheard songs. Just because it has yet to happen means nothing. We can all read into it what we like, but clearly nothing has been stated to the contrary so there is little point in speculating the whole myriad of possibilities.

A contract has been signed. This we know. The contract includes new music, a PR reissue with unheard songs. This we know. Everything else we do not know and every other possibility raised here on the org has come from someone's opinion and view point based on nothing but speculation.

The only thing that has been clearly stated is what was in the original press release. Nothing else comes accross as particularly clear or, indeed, true or not.

Based on that then, I say the PR reissue is still going to happen and it will include unheard songs. That is what was contractually agreed by both parties. And thats all we know. That is clear.

The movie, and others video, live video are NOT part of the contract that was announced on 1st april. Prince had his masters back already, you can't cheat I TUNES. Maybe WB is, like I said, holding the money back until the release of PR.

I highly doubt of a PR re-release in a physical format in years to come. Like I said, it would have already happened months ago. That and every WB album between 1978/1999.

And of course unheard in this context means unheard by the general public, not unheard by collectors of bootlegs.

The wooh is on the one!
