I wonder what P thinks of 'Uptown Funk'? Proud? Jealous? That song is getting seriously popular now and I wonder how P feels. Does he feel good about how the sound he created is reaching a new generation? Does he think 'shit I could have made that track in my sleep and it's an international #1!'. Does he care at all?
I've heard 'exciting new sound' used to describe it by other famous musicians and DJs haha! Reminiscent of MJ is also the most common point of comparison I got two sides... and they're both friends.

This song is weak as hell. U can't think Prince is jealous of this track. Lol.............I needed that laugh. [Edited 12/17/14 12:10pm] FOOLS multiply when WISE Men & Women are silent.

Prince's only sane response to someone like Bruno Mars would be not to give a shit.

Well, the synth horn riffing does sound like horns from an '80s MJ track.
The rest of it screams early '80s Prince to a huge degree though.
A fine effort at a (slightly updated) take on the Minneapolis sound, it's just the vocals that don't sound Princey. My respect for Mark Ronson has increased (tho it wasn't high to begin with ) for having the ability to put together this funk, tho the fact the song has 6 writers is funny.
It amuses me if people think this is a 'new sound'. Surprisingly good Prince rip-off though.

Yep, according to the Wiki entry for the song, these are the composers - Ronson, Jeff Bhasker, Mars, Philip Lawrence, Devon Gallaspy and Nicholaus Williams. Mind boggles huh?

There is a clear Prince influence BUT calling it "Uptown Funk". THAT is Prince-bait. I think it was designed from the ground up to get his attention, which it no doubt has. I wouldn't be surprised if Ronson was trying to instigate a collaboration.

If anything, I would think Prince could show the youngsters just how UPTOWN FUNK is really done but "jealous?" Nah! I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Perhaps. But only because of Prince's inability to work with people. Ronson is a very talented guy.

I think he's probably slightly pissed off, but at the end of the day it's still Prince's sound that Bruno is ripping off so people (most probably young people) that look more into the genre will somewhere along the way discover Prince. Which is never a bad thing. 6 writers though?? That takes the piss.

I like Bruno but he is more of an MJ/JB rip off. There is nothing "Prince" about him. To even compare him to Prince is an insult to Prince. And yeah, the song is weak as fuck. Makes me miss his last album.

Sorry but this is like (I like) Funky Music with a non-plastic, synthy arrangement. It's noodling left and right -- I like the energy but it's almost a funk spoof rather than the real thing.

It pays uncredited homeage to Prince. I want to believe it was made as a nod to our Purple Friend - but I also wonder if the song was even offered to him as a collaboration, as Noodled24 mentioned. It would have been fantastic - if Prince actually agreed to do the song. Since he didn't, Bruno is doing his own thing and how Princely that is, ultimately is up to the listener's interpretation. A much better "rip-off" and homeage to Prince's sound is by Felix Da Housecat, with "We All Wanna Be Prince."

its good that he's reviving that sound I guess. It doesn't do much for me though. [Edited 12/18/14 20:54pm] Change it one more time..

Really? Seriously? A lot of you think this song is weak. Uh no. This song is definitely funky and of course it's all Prince inspired. Anyone that knows anything about Prince's music would recognize the abc buildiing blocks of this song. Heck, I am just happy the word funk is on popular radio. I tell all my friends and peeps I am into funk, namely Prince. They don't even know what that means. Can you believe that shit? I have no idea what Prince thinks but if I had to guess I would say it's about time we got some funk up in this joint (the radio that is). And he knows it's a nod to him. It just might make him go into the studio and grab that one eyed bass and start thumb slapping a groove together. In my eyes anytime funky music gets out there it's all good. Time to add uptown funk to my house party mixes. I always try to keep it funky!!! [Edited 12/17/14 19:13pm]

Why do people think Prince is 'jealous' of fellow funk acts like D'Angelo and Bruno Mars? Is it not possible he either likes/dislikes the work? Why does jealousy even have to come up? D & Bruno aren't even on Prince's level. Maybe do, just not like did before

. i think the song is nothing much dressed up in 80s funk aesthetic. And it's certainly not all Prince inspired...

A lot of people didn't say it was weak. One person said it, repeatedly and presented their personal opinion as fact. I work in a large office & EVERY time this song comes on the radio, the staff sing along, chair dance etc... I'm not overly keen on the song, but it's catchy as hell. If that means it's 'weak', I wish Prince would get in the act more! [Edited 12/17/14 23:53pm] blah blah blah

I think what ever he thinks, this track and even Mark Ronson's album may just be what the charts needed, he has antoher track out with the forgotten rapper (and registered sex offender) Mystikal (Shake that ass but watch yourself) check it out its called Feel Right and seems quite James Brown influenced.

Nothing special with this track, it's reasonably funky and def ol skool, I like it alright don't get me wrong but nothing special, and honestly Prince can record 5 songs like that every day if he so wishes. It's not a hit because it's especially good, it's a hit because it's been intensely marketed by the record company and its media accomplices. I think something like this could easily come out of a session recording between P and Nile Rodgers, as evoked in the P/Rodgers interview. And The Gold Standard is funkier than that anyway A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

It's funk-lite. It's a tight jam but it's not as smoothly and cohesively produced like "Treasure" and "Locked Out of Heaven", lacking the potent old school feel that those 2 tracks possessed. It's more of an amalgamation of the different takes on funk (i.e. GAP Band, Rick James, Chic, etc.) with each of those respective features piled on top of one another rather than connected together. Like I said, it's a tight jam but it's more of a disappointment than anything. It harkens back to happier times of music without reviving the feeling of music during those times. It's not great, it's not good, it's not bad, it's decent and nothing more. I'm inclined to think that if this weren't a Mark Ronson song and was Bruno's, the latter and his team would have done this track justice and made a tune that was more than catchy, danceable watered down funk from several sources with no foundation to tie all the elements together. Prince has no reason to be jealous of this.
