What song are we listening to here? This is not in anyway Prince's sound, I hear more Roger & Zapp and Eighties Bar-Kays to be honest. A good effort yes but Mr. Nelson's not quaking in his custom boots.

True. I hear more Zapp & Bar-kays there too. There's also a little bit of JB in there, as that's what Bruno's done on his own for a while already. However, you know what it's often like. People try to sound like Prince and they end up sounding more like Zapp and Bar-Kays. lol

I think it's closer to The Time's stuff than Prince's own solo stuff in any case. I hear a Morris influence on the vocals at the very least. It's too much of mixed bag for me in any case. Quite a few things there are a bit "off". I don't think the vocal melody fits the funk context that well.

Prince probably feels less annoyed than Laid Back did when he released Erotic City.

I ws thinking the same thing. I hear more Zapp in the song.

It's not bad- I like Mark Ronson. But, I don't get a strong Prince vibe. I hear a bit of Prince via The TIme influnce in this.

Just listened to their track White Horse from 1983. I'd be very surprised if Prince hadn't heard that song as it was a decent hit in the Dance, R & B and Billboard charts at the time. Prince by no means ripped the song off, but it sounds like there's a real influence there.

The intro with the little keyboard phrase especially sounds like the Erotic City intro. Hadn't heard this track before, so interesting, thanks for this smile .

That song is getting seriously popular now and I wonder how P feels. Does he feel good about how the sound he created is reaching a new generation? Does he think 'shit I could have made that track in my sleep and it's an international #1!'. Does he care at all?

I've heard 'exciting new sound' used to describe it by other famous musicians and DJs haha! eek Reminiscent of MJ is also the most common point of comparison disbelief

P don't care...at all....

I think the song is ok. It reminds me of a reworked of "Get Up" from Brass Construction with the horn line from MJ's "Jam."

Good, bad or indifferent, I hope this track encourages more people to get back to funk.

Glad you searched for it, it's an interesting track. Prince was a fan back in the day & there's a clear 'borrowing' of ideas in Erotic City.

Just wanted to point out the Prince begs steals & borrows just like the rest of 'em, even if some on here refuse to believe it possible that his music isn't 100% original & that he's above being influenced smile

No one creates art in a vacuum, literally everything is inspired by something.. but the key to being recognized as truly creative is to take what has inspired you and make it your own.

Change it one more time..

The b-side 'Sex Tape' by Har Mar Superstar is way more Prince-like than this one. It's a much better song, too.

I don't think funk is coming back. Funk is based on the groove and all the best grooves have been taken. Rock is also practically dead because all the best guitar riffs have been used. Its much easier to make music based on a simple 4/4 beat, I–V–vi–IV chord progression, and a bassline using root notes.

Nice song.

It reminds me of the Time, not Prince.

Bruno Mars makes hits from over the top obvious reuse of other hits or signature sounds like Lost Out Of Heaven (The Police) Treasure (MJ) now this. I think Bruno made this song a sort of tribute to give people the impression he is paying respect. Safe thing to do when you can't come up with anything original. Don't care for him or this track. Can't speak for Prince but I would imagine he would say something polite if asked but doubt he would be impressed or jealous.
