Those sounds never originated with Prince, but rather can be heard in some of the songs made famous by The Stylistics (You Make Me Feel Brand new, for example). Also, I'm listening to the Jill Scott track called "Sweet Justice," and it has the same sound. So how bout we keep it real for once on the org and get off this "he out-Princed Prince" mishugas. |

Can't you admit people have different tastes simply?
I know many people who love mlusic but connot stand Prince and D'Angelo or only like one of the two.
Personally I am a fan of The Rainbow Children, One nite alone, The Truth, LotusFlower and AOA.
yep, I suppose you're right It could be as simple as a matter of taste. But also for some I feel there is some hating going on. D isn't the first dude to come along to be compared to Prince. I too enjoyed some of the songs off TRC,Lotusflower, Come,Planet Earth,Chaos & Disorder but I would have to select songs from all these album to even come close to Brown Sugar,Voodoo or Black Messiah. But One Nite Alone is great.
That is not a matter of fact, it is a matter of opinion. Mine (opinion) is that The Rainbow Children, NEWS and Plectrumelectrum are MILES AND MILES above any D'Angelo album. |

Let me repeat that--NO, PRINCE DID NOT GET OUTPRINCED! (I'd type it at about 100 point if the option was available). Just throw out that stinking bag of opinion out with the trash right now before it stinks up the whole house. D'Angelo does what every other person who tries to do Prince does--puts his own spin on what are now cliched "Prince sounds," which never harken to any other time period but the "classic period." Did Prince get lost in a world of troubles that made 15 years go by between albums (and no, I don't approve of Erykah Badu's "he records his own thing" comment)? No. Don't get me wrong, I am warming to the sounds of the album and heard my first latching on point in "Get It Done," but I expected to hear something greater than Voodoo, especially after all this time. I expected more than this being D'Angelo's Dirty Mind/Black Album period.
Nah. It's best if we all just admit that Prince got outPrinced here. Bad.
Dude. It's best you just stop speaking. You will never hear me saying this, because you're disguising fact as opinion, and it really works my last good gay nerve to hear people go there. Time out for you. |

Until Prince delivers an album equal to Purple Rain or Sign O the Times, you haters will continue to hate. Once you've stooped to giving more praise to D'angelo for an album that you openly admit sounds like a Prince album...there's pretty much no hope. I mean, do you not hear the absurd logic in this? Prince is not gonna put out another worldwide smash hit album, that everybody loves. Prince put out a good album with AOA, in my opinion. If it had gotten proper, strategic promotion..it would have been a bigger hit. Is it equal to Purple Rain? Absolutely not. Is it Prince at his best? Yes...it's Prince at his 2014 best. It's Prince at his best in his current state of creativity. It's Prince at his best is his current state of mind. It's Prince at his best, 36 years into his career, well over 30 commercial released albums into his career and Prince at his best at 56 years old. Dangelo isn't worthy of sweeping the floors at Paisley Park. He delivers one good "prince inspired" album, and suddenly Prince should be taking notes from him?! Sounds like Dangelo took the notes, and hence the reason he delivered a good album. |

There's only about 3 songs that are Prince-ish. Most of it sounds more like Sly, but he put his own spin on it. Doesn't sound derivative. I will say that D out-Princed him on "The Charade". That song is so Prince, but it's better than anything on AOA and PE. "1000 Deaths" and "Ain't That Easy" sound like Controversy era mixed with ATWIAD era. [Edited 12/21/14 12:03pm] |

I love some Donna Summer type disco such as "I Feel Love", "Sunset People", "Our Love", etc. which is drum machines. I love some Gary Numan "Cars", very furutistic sounding. Hell, there's even loads of rap I love also such as Soul Sonic Force, Twilight 22, Egyptian Lover, etc. If it's gonna be drum machines though, it's gotta be strong sounding drum machines with some punch to them. It's the shit hop sounding drum machines that I hate which just barely tap and sound like some sort of Fisher Price toy. I haven't heard it, but if he's the same D'Angelo I used to hear on the radio in the 1990s and early 2000s, there's probably not a fast ass shaker on the entire album and just some "smooth" midtempo neo stool. As horrible as "Fart Official Age" is, at least it has one ass shaker, "The Gold Standard". But if there are some ass shakers on D'Angelo's latest, let me know so I can check them out because ass shakers are rare these days.

Nah....Black Messiah is far removed from those tired "neo soul" tags...The funk is strong on this one....
.
I went to youtube last night and listened to several tracks from the album just to see what all the fuss was about. If there was a funk track on the album, I most have overlooked it. What I heard was a snoozefest of slow to midtempo that sounded like something a bunch of stuffy folks would sit around a lounge and listen to while sipping wine and trying to act all "cultured" while simply bobbing their heads.
.
I didn't hear one single song that had a feel of folks coming down the Soul Train line and shaking the hell out of some asses while everyone hollers....."Aww hell yeah. You better work bitch! Work! Work! Work dammitt!"....Now, something that's got a feel like that is some funky shit. Some uptempo, get down, party, and shake ass till you drop type stuff, not some smooth lounge lizzards sitting around trying to be all saddity. Hell, that dull stuff wore the buzz off my drunk ass.

The blues, jazz, rnb, soul, funk, rock & roll, and hip hop all started off as dance music. All these genres were taken away from their roots to be taken more "seriously." Now all dance music has been concetrated into the EDM category and other genres don't even try to compete for the dance flloor. In fact, r nb and pop singles are remixed to an edm sounds so they can get club play. Hell, do artists even make their own club remixes anymore? [Edited 12/21/14 15:17pm] |

I posted this earlier about the Another Love version on PE...
From the baseline reference to D'Angelo's Brown Sugar album it is hard for me to imagine that Prince's version of Another Love is the standard finger in the air commentary. I could be grasping at straws but the base as played by ? Prince, Donna or Ida ? does allude to the creeping base of D'Angelo's earlier work. Since the PE cd was stamped with the same baseline, Another Love could merely be a promotion of that artist's work (Vanguard BM)... So, I am of the opinion that someone at least knew the Vanguard BM album was ready for a release. |
