I hate to admit it but as of today, Prince has been out-Princed. Black Messiah is all kinds of fire. Let's hope it spurs some healthy competition smile

I think that's so true but some fans don't want to admit it . That's not saying Prince isn't more talented, he clearly is and he has had a few songs that were cool on all of his releases but as a whole since D'Angelo's debut he's been out Princeing Prince. Brown Sugar,Voodoo and now Black Messiah have ALL been SUPERIOR to any album Prince has put out from 1995-present. I really don't expect Prince to be able to do what he use to. He's older now and with age we loose a little something. It happens in sports and it happens in music

Can't you admit people have different tastes simply?

I know many people who love mlusic but connot stand Prince and D'Angelo or only like one of the two.

Personally I am a fan of The Rainbow Children, One nite alone, The Truth, LotusFlower and AOA.

yep, I suppose you're right It could be as simple as a matter of taste. But also for some I feel there is some hating going on. D isn't the first dude to come along to be compared to Prince. I too enjoyed some of the songs off TRC,Lotusflower, Come,Planet Earth,Chaos & Disorder but I would have to select songs from all these album to even come close to Brown Sugar,Voodoo or Black Messiah. But One Nite Alone is great.

I think The Rainbow Children is as good as any D'Angelo album. Though it's the only Prince release since Voodoo that I can say that about. Had Lotusflower maintained what it had in its first 3 tracks, I'd probably rank that just as highly too.

It is mos def about taste. If you like what D'angelo does then you will like the entire albums because all the songs are fairly close to each other in sound. Prince is much more challengeing album to album and song to song.

This is why the org exasperated me enough to leave a few years ago--you know NOTHING of what you speak, it's all just more of the ego pissing contest. NO, Prince did not get out-Princed! Let me repeat that--NO, PRINCE DID NOT GET OUTPRINCED! (I'd type it at about 100 point if the option was available). Just throw out that stinking bag of opinion out with the trash right now before it stinks up the whole house. D'Angelo does what every other person who tries to do Prince does--puts his own spin on what are now cliched "Prince sounds," which never harken to any other time period but the "classic period." Did Prince get lost in a world of troubles that made 15 years go by between albums (and no, I don't approve of Erykah Badu's "he records his own thing" comment)? No. Don't get me wrong, I am warming to the sounds of the album and heard my first latching on point in "Get It Done," but I expected to hear something greater than Voodoo, especially after all this time. I expected more than this being D'Angelo's Dirty Mind/Black Album period.

Because the rumour originated from a usually reliable source that leaks usually reliable Prince news. Also, Prince has directly responded to D'Angelo in the past.

If you read my other comments on this thread and others, you'll find I'm a great supporter of Prince and have been for years. I consider AOA a classic and saw Prince live in the UK three times this year. They were among the best I've ever seen from him and I've seen him live about twenty times.

However, I also love Black Messiah and think it's a genuinely brilliant album. D went highly organic, which I appreciate, but is not something Prince is particularly known for.

PE is a more organic record than Black Messiah though.

There seems to be quite a bit of tinkering involved with the vocals and the timebase of many rhythmic elements on Black Messiah. Fully analog recordings or not, it's still an album that's full of editing, double-tracking and overdubbing.

Unfortunately, D'Angelo lost his potential to drug addiciton. If he stuck to music and touring through the 2000s, I have no doubt he would have burned through many styles. He would have experimented with new sounds or worked with new musicians and producers. He also would have become a stronger, more distinctive live performer. He really could have been the heir apparent to Prince who never stopped changing his sound. The Musicology is so vastly different to the AOA era. Also like Prince, he would have lost a few fans because of his new direction.

BM is like D pushing the pause button for 15 years and finally pressing play. He hasn't been thinking about music at all and just started where he left off. So, maybe it is a bit unfair to expect a mssive new direction from him. Hopefully, his next album will be a push in a new direction that some of us would love to see. If D'Angelo came out with the same musci for his followup, I'd bet even the diehard fans of BM would be saying "Ok, time to change up."

Dude suffered his madness though and didn't necessarily make it so obvious in his art, but in the end, we're talking about someone who used to drop his pants down to his ankles during shows because he just couldn't help himself.

We are talking about craziness in their music.

Fierce post my friend -- because if you believe in D'Angelo's talent, you have to wonder what he would have done had he not been so leisurely about expressing it.

Black Messiah is a great record, but you have to admit the idea he polished an handful of songs for years is bullshit. It's "rarity" overhype, the myth of the artist who is so incredibly artistic and creative that perfection is only is attained after years of patient labour.

The thing is, it doesn't serve any purpose whatsoever to second guess people's reasons or manufacture reasons why somebody you dont know may or may not like what you like when you can simply take their word for it.

People either like something or they don't....period.

Not meaning you but why is there this monumental effort being instigated to have a pissing contest over this? It reminds me of middle schoolers. The people who are not wowed by BM can't sit at the table with the cool kids at recess. disbelief

But this is Totally Computer Produced Music using Digital tools..

Its interesting to find out that its less the way a 'Sound' is acheived & more the end result.

Cool!

I really don't get the orignal post. D'Angelo's album is pure D'Angelo, it's f'n great. I don't hear anyone trying to sound or outdue Prince, I hear D'Angelo being the artist he is, along with the sounds that inspired him to create.

.

They're both R&B artists that are musically inclined, but they're so different. Prince I think has a broader sound with more pop, but D'Angelo's is refined & organic, both make amazing music.

.

I'm so excited for D's new release, I can't believe it's finally here, I'm on Cloud9 this year with music!
