It's from the Eavesdropped In Intimate Moments boot called "The Making of 'So High'" [Edited 11/16/14 20:29pm] I love this boot. Piano versions of Purple Rain. 17 Days, Strange Relationship and Prince doing a fat line at the beginning of International Lover. Awesome Bitch this ain't the movies

I think when I had it on vinyl there was no Eavesdropped. I don't remember any "fat lines" being done, though--must be greater clarity on CD.

is this all better quality than the stuff on Purple Rush Volume 2? Which I think was the highest quality previously available? [Edited 11/17/14 12:34pm]

Unless Sheila E. made some new revelations in her book (haven't read it yet but reviews says she addresses TBA) there is so far no factual data to support the theory that the TBA "fiasco" was planned by Prince as a marketing ploy, nor that the whole thing was anything else but the spiritual/ecstasy trip it was reported to be by several sources. And for a bootleg, it was indeed a hit. I've never seen as many mainstream reviews for a bootleg of an unreleased album as happened with TBA.
I would also argue that by the time he sold the tape with several Gold Experience tracks to a radio station (in Europe?) he was well aware that the tracks would become fodder for bootleggers and tape traders. Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

I totally agree with everything u say, but it's a totally different matter: sending promo tapes to radio channels or givin tapes to friends knowing that it'd be bootlegged eventually is NOT the same as selling tapes to booltleg labels or leaking unreleased tracks online incognito as suggested by some. Similarly sent videos to that Shelbey girl in 2009 and anyway he has to be aware of the fact that everything he offers in streaming-only will be bootleged later, as well as were every promo 7'' he'd sent to the radios in the 80's, but it's got nuffin to do with leakin' or bootlegging the stuff himself ^^ . Anyway in the case on the past few leaks some people know who did it so it's definitely not . A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

This is not a lie!!!! This is my own personal experience of what my friends I found back in 1988. The Lovesexy album came out. Then the video for Alphabet Street came out. When it hit the street so did the "hidden message" in plain sight was brought to our attention by being reported every hour on the hour on MTV. The Black Album? what is this Back Album? where do we find this? Suddenly a friend of a friend had a copy. My friend Patty got a copy and made me a copy. Who knows where that friend of a friend got their copy. The video said not to buy it. We didn't. We were sharing it. The first copy we got sounded fast. We questioned if this was at the right speed. So that friend of a friend had another copy that was slowed down. But When 2 R In Love didn't sound right. I think When 2 R In Love was on both albums so the listener would know what speed to play the album at. Because thats how we figured out the right speed was. This video message also let me know that other recordings that were not published existed. I had no idea about bootlegs before this whole Black Album business. I then found a local record store that was not a chain that had all of these prince albums with names of songs I had never heard of. We were over the moon to hear We Can Funk, Joy In Repetiton, Can't Stop This Feeling I Got, Databank, All Day All Night, The Dance Electric, Crystal Ball, The Rebirth Of Flesh..... And more... it was a 4 vinyl set of all the Dream Factory / Crystal Ball outtakes. The music that has been reported several times over that Prince wanted to put out that Warner Bros didn't want to publish. Funny I found a copy of it anyway in spite of Warner Bros. At the Lovesexy concert.... The guy next to Patty wanted to know how she knew the words to these songs from The Black Album. So she filled him in on what the songs were from and how she found out about them. He gave her his address and gave her a few $$ to buy a tape and to pay for the postage to send him a copy. If Prince didn't play the songs at the concert the guy next to Patty wouldn't have known to ask about the songs. He even got a copy because of it. In all my years of going to concerts. They tour to promote the albums. If Prince didn't want to promote The Black Album, then why for the love of god would he have played the songs at the concert? Because he wanted us to hear the music. In the years I have been on this earth, if someone was sorry about something they have done, they don't tour the globe singing what they are so sorry about. <eye roll>
Now... Sheila E. was no different than any of the other people who have worked with him. They ALL have talked about working on music and not knowing what will be done with it. Nothing saying this wasn't the same case. So your reasoning has no weight.
Now my factual data on this? If Prince himself didn't tell me about this album, I would have never known about it at all. The leak was Prince himself. Actions speak louder than YOUR theory.

I see where u're coming from and I sincerely enjoyed reading your past experiences but before anything else let's make things clear: I don't have "a theory". There is a story about the chain of events that led to the conception then cancelation of TBA, that's been told and corroborated by every person involved and past associate ever asked about it. This isn't a "theory": unless further research one day reveals a different side to this story, it's History. I am extremely irritated by the habit people have (not just here and not just about Prince) to claim that historical research is "theory": unless new, verified and sourced facts emerge that contradict a cohesive corpus of data that come from a certain amount of sources that reveal a cohesive treatment of how things happened, whatever is revealed by biographers, researchers and historians have to be considered factual. Whoever has doubts and wishes to challenge established History has to be willing and able to do more proper research in order to find solid elements that corroborate their ideas and contradict the established version of how things happen, or they do nothing but confusing minds and distorting historical data for nothing. It's called conspirationism and it's one of the major intellectual challenge of our times, given how the internet drive people insane with fairy tales. . Now I see your point about Prince USING this TBA situation to create some hype, I have never denied the fact that he probably did so and your experiences are, honestly, very interesting when it comes to how the public got to know about TBA at the time (even though there were also numerous articles and some radio airplay that didn't depend on Prince). Was the message in Alphabet St. sincere or a way to "promote" the bootleg? We don't know (yet). As for the live show it kinda made sense, Lovesexy being the "holy" side of the "evil" Black Album and the tour being all about that religious redemption thing. It's been said numerous times that TBA and Lovesexy could have been the 2 sides of a double album and it would have worked perfectly, the tour reflected that in spirit, hence IMHO the 2 TBA songs (it could have been more but it was only 2). But it MAY indeed also have been a way to promote the bootleg, we don't know (yet) either. . There is however a gap between: - admitting that Prince certainly took advantage of the TBA situation for the purpose of creating a hype by having such a sulfurous unreleased but circulating album, which is something the facts tend to show but haven't been corroborated nor denied by any of his past associates and - claiming as some did -not necessarly you but some- that Prince had planned the whole thing from the beginning, duped WB by making them print an album for nothing, invented a religious excuse to cancel it at the last minute and made sure a few copies leaked in order to use it as a marketing ploy . Facts (and not theories) tell us that Prince DID want to release this album, DID cancel it for spiritual reasons and DID NOT organize its leak in any way whatsoever. Facts also tell us that he did not "ignore" the cancelled album hoping it'd be forgotten but indeed, as you point out, made several allusions to it during the following months. What his intentions were by doing so, no one knows. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

The facts: Alphabet Street "secret message" that ran on MTV talking about The Black Album. The review in Rolling Stone of Lovesexy talked about The Black Album. it also described what the album was like. The opening line of The Black Album. "So you found me, good I'm glad". I didn't know he was lost..... No he wasn't, but he wanted us to find The Black Album. this is how we took this back in 1988 as his saying he was happy we looked and found this. It was the opening line to the album. At the concert he played songs from The Black Album. The concert program book outlined both Lovesexy & The Black Album. One being dark (The Black Album) and the light (Lovesexy). It talked descriptively about each of the songs on The Black Album. All the pages in the book that were about The Black Album were a solid black background with peach lettering. All the Lovesexy parts were on a white background with purple/blue lettering. My book is packed away in the back of the closet with my other Prince things. But if you have a copy of it. Read it. It marries the two albums together. You said he "DID NOT organize its leak in any way". Well.... What is a leak? When someone leaks information, its known as someone talking about the information (to the press normally). All of the information I listed above came from Prince. it all seems organized to me. Didn't copies go to the reviewers before the album was scraped? They are the press, and they love a good story. It sells and that is the business they are in. I remember the VJ's on MTV when they were talking about the "secret message" in the video. It had a very "wink, wink, nudge, nudge" feel to it. HEY! secret message over here. I am sure that the Prince camp told them about the message in the video.
To me this is like saying.... HEY OVER HERE!!!! DON"T LOOK AT THIS OVER HERE!!!! NOTHING TO SEE OVER HERE. If someone came into a room with a bag, put it on the table and said to you. There is noting in this bag that you want. So don't look in this bag. You have to promise NOT to look in this bag, over here. This one, here on the table. DON'T look inside. Whatever you do, DON'T LOOK!!!! that's what it was like back in 1988. Ya had to look! Everything points to him wanting us to find this album. That was how we read the messages and clues Prince left for us to find. it was like a scavenger hunt.
Now the issue of people around him not talking about The Black Album and confirming that he did this intentionally. Prince doesn't like anyone talking about anything about him at all. Wendy & Lisa say they get letters in the mail from his lawyer if they say things in the slightest way. So am I shocked nobody came forward saying this is what he did. No. I don't take what people say who have worked with Prince as truth. I think what they say is clouded by fear of a lawsuit. So you maybe getting half the story if you are getting the truth at all. Prince even has the people that buy his music running in fear of his lawyer. If he was to admit that he intentionally did what he did to create this "underground album". He could find himself in court for fraud. I think the time has run out that a lawsuit could be filed. Plus the fact the album ended up being released anyway. But for him to admit he did this at this point, would hurt him having companies working with him if he has a history of playing expensive games. (I have always thought of boxes and boxes Black Albums being destroyed.... and who paid for this?) Because that is how it would be view. On top of this, it would ruin the story. Its like Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" song. She is not going to tell what the song is about. It thrills her that people toil over who the song is about. But I think that the only person who would know if this was intentional is Prince. I'm sure Prince got a thrill out of this too.
But in the case of The Black Album..... If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, and swims like a duck. Guess what? It's a duck.... I know a duck when I see one. The Black Album is one big stinking duck. The only thing missing in this puzzle is admittance from Prince. That is all that's missing. I don't need Prince or anyone else to tell me that The Black Album is a duck. I think it was a really cool and different way being creative. It really worked to create a buzz and a concept album and message. At the time, it was frustrating and fun all at the same time. But to me.... This will ALWAYS be an intentional underground album. Period! I will never forget the look on that guys face at the concert. How do you know this song? He was beside himself.... it was too funny.

Prince is the source of most studio bootlegs that are out there. He may not have intended them to end up where they do, but he was the one that handed copies out. Im sure a studio engineer or two may also have sneaked a copy out occasionally, but mainly it is Prince handing out copies, some of which end up being bootlegged. I doubt Prince is deliberately releasing anything as a bootleg though, but he was very casual about handing tapes out back in the day. These days, not so much.

From Wiki: Just before the album was released to the market, Prince recalled all copies and abandoned the entire project, leaving roughly 100 European promotional copies in circulation, and several American copies that would be widely bootleged in the years to come.
From the Phili Enquirer published back in 1988: What is known is that a few journalists were sent copies in advance tapes of The Black Album for review.
Back in the day it was known that the album was sent to reviewers. You couldn't read a review about Lovesexy without The Black Album also being mentioned and they would talk about the content because they had heard the album.
The reason back in the day that was given why the album was scrapped was that he had a spiritual epiphany and made Lovesexy. To me that was just like him saying he changed his name to a symbol because of a spiritual epiphany. That turned out to be about Warner Bros taking copyright of his name and not a spiritual epiphany. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.
As a person who has spent 30+ years listening to Prince's music I have learned that you have to read between the lines and not take everything at face value. Don't look for proof, because you wont find it.
THE END
This is my thread was my second post on this site, and will be my last. I have only been in read only mode on this site in the past for years. I would only read this site so I know what is going on with Prince so I don't have to hunt him down to the 4 corners of the earth. So I am going back to read only mode. WHY? Because of people like you and your nasty comments. So have fun being the Prince police.... <eye roll>

My bad for the promo copies, I was mistaken and I admitted above that I wasn't 100% sure about this particular point but nonetheless, as explained already, it doesn't change anything to the fact that such copies were sent BEFORE the album cancellation so it doesn't change anything to the whole story. Don't post on forums if u won't stand people disagreeing with u. What kind of a blackmail is that? "U're so bad I'll leave, so u better beg me to stay". I won't sorry, but your contribution was interesting in some aspects so it's a shame.
