I don't know who would have access to these songs that would want to just release them to hurt Prince now. I mean if this is a revolution member then wouldn't they have done it sooner? like in the 80's? And why not release them all at once if this is someone's way to hurt him? If the songs are high quality and being released one at a time and not all at once then it seems like something Prince would do. I wish I could hear these songs!

Is it plausible that Prince is behind these leaks?

KingSausage said:

No.

This might have been discussed at length in the past, but I never read a convincing argument why Prince would not leak material himself. I mean, for many of his hardcore fans, the whole bootleg-unreleased stuff, was a big part of their admiration and contributed to a very loyal fanbase throughout the years. What is the main argument for him not leaking stuff himself, knowing how big of a factor it is of how we perceive him and his music?

The outtakes would be in better quality too. I've yet to hear one that truly sounds of high quality audio release standard.

We all know it's Tony M. doing it anyway.

Prince doesn't leak anything, all those recordings are indeed from tapes he gave to associates at the time, something he totally ceased to do after 1995, hence the total lack of outtakes ever since. Up until 95 he was reported to distribute tapes all around to musicians, Paisley Park staff, associated artists, girlfiends, WB execs... That's quite impressive given the hundreds of recording out there but it seems they all come from those tapes he gave away. According to Alan Leeds, Prince was quite upset when he realized all those tracks were out there and investigations were even made at PP at some point, but they couldn't find any evidence that anything had been stolen from the vault, so the tapes were the only possible source. For some years Prince kept distributing tapes despite being aware that they may end-up on boots eventually, then finally in 95 he decided it was enough and kept all his stuff for himself. Associates from the past 20 years testified that they would never get a tape: they had to go to the studio to record their part without any recording given to them prior to that for practice nor afterwards (meaning if the stuff wasn't released they don't have a copy at all). The only time a statement was made that opposed that theory was once made here: some orger claimed he knew people who'd been charged by Prince to contact bootleg labels and sell them the tapes of the whole Studio Nights and City Nights collections back in 95. Given how little bootleg labels can pay by Prince's standard, given that the collection also contained recordings by André Cymone and BrowMark, given that it wouldn't go past 1986 and even more given the fact that the collection contains very embarrassing recordings (the 76 demos!), I find this quite unlikely and the common consensus on the Org is that either that person lied or was lied to.

.

Prince has also constantly harrassed and shut down bootlegs websites, even fanzines publishing reviews of bootlegs for chrissakes! The last "clean-up" was only a few month ago! So IDK where the assessment that he doesn't come from (a new fan I guess).

.

+ the mere notion that Prince would leak stuff NOW of all times, when he actually has regained rights over his full catalogue and is now free to make money with it, is ridiculous.

.

But anyway for any negationist who still wouldn't be convinced, truth is that we usually do know who leaks the stuff. When I say "we" I don't mean "I" or "everyone", but people in the know know, it's not like the shit pops-up from nowhere. Outtakes are often being tagged, discreet tags on the recording, so whoever gives/sells a copy to someone knows that it's their own copy that's leaked if/when it happens. Many of the recent leaks were also known for years to be circulating in some circles, and when one had read threads on this forum and other fan forums for as long as I have, one can pretty much understand how things work when it comes to "elite" collectors, outtakes trading and leaks. Some people have told quite a few interesting stories on this very forum. Now it seems among the "old" collectors there are people who think it's time to leak the stuff and some who don't and some of those people have been arguing about this for years. There are also people who give stuff to a good friend, or sell it for several hundred bucks, in exchange for the promise that it won't be leaked, but the new owner eventually break their word and leaks it (or give it to someone who does). The whole story's been more or less told on the Org for the past 15 years, one just needs to read every past thread about outtakes to figure it out.

.

So one needs to understand that this is not an open debate or a matter of opinion. When there are loads of elements indicating that something is A and no tangible element to suggest that it may be B, a rational approach has to accept it for being A until new solid elements have surfaced. So far, no such solid elements have, there isn't a single little thing to suggest that Prince may have purposedly leaked a single bootleg his entire life. Give me one and we can re-open the debate. Until then, there's simply no debate.

asking if prince is behind the recent leaks smile heck, i'm sure there will be one or two who

speaking of which, anna garcia had some tapes, didn't she?

she sold some of the stuff she got from prince a while ago,

but i can't remember if she also sold some tapes.

if she did, perhaps "Anna Waiting" was on one of them; the

original version of "Vicky Waiting". i'd love to hear that one

While I no longer believe that Prince releases his own bootlegs, I do believe that he "get[s] off" on knowing how much fans "cream" over them. lol In a way, it's his "alternate reality" catalog [we all know how much Prince loves these silly mind games that he tries to play confused ]. I often separate the real fans from the regulars through bootlegs.

The whole '95 & after bootleg talk is funny though. I kinda feel that the decline in boots after that also comes from Prince's decline as a creative artist too. Not much avant-garde has come out since then either, imo. neutral

He is also a hypocrite, liar, frequently changes his mind and contradicts himself.

Besides, the songs "The Dance Electric", "Kiss Me Quick" and The Flesh Sessions what other old school unreleased material has been leaked lately?

I've heard

Purple Music. Its not EX, But now its listenable, enjoyable

Dinner With Deloris. The old curculating copy is very low, muffled, poor, almost unlistenable. The update is clear and vibrant
Madonna's Love Song (Album Inst.) flac, But appears this has been around for a while, still a nice find cool

Cant believe my purple psychedelic pimp slap pimp2

And I descend from grace, In arms of undertow
I will take my place, In the great below
