Just to keep it simple: first listen to Kamasutra.

Take a few aspirins.

Then listen to Standing Stone.

Thanks. I will check out Standing Stone with an open mind. I am really curious.

I was addressing the "popular" factor. As far as "better" - in all the criteria that the OP set forth - is concerned; Stevie Wonder is the only one on the list that I'd place above Prince.

There is none, never was none, never will be none....

While other artists have GREAT songs (Hey Ya!), or GREAT albums (It Takes A Nation Of Millions to Hold Us Back), or GREAT careers (Stevie, Paul, MJ), NO ONE (NO ONE) covered all bases like Prince has done (and is still doing, AOA is a classic album).

BAR NONE.

Shut it down.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Popular culture is littered with Prince ref and sounds today meaning hos relevancy is alive and strong

Exactly - the uninformed interpret relevance as chart position and sales in this low brow, superficial, material society

Like others said, things like this are subjective. It all depends on how you look at things.

for instance, I think Prince, Bowie, and Stevie Wonder I feel have the most impressive discography.

as far as songwriting, I would say Prince, Bob Dylan, and Lennon/McCartney

influence? I'd say The Beatles and Michael Jackson and James Brown

Although MJ didn't really play any instruments, other than voice. You have to look at his over all influence. From the style, the sound, the dancing, and of coarse the music videos.

Really, it's impossible to answer these kinds of questions.

If we are talking about strickly musicianship, I can't think of anyone who can touch Prince.

I don't think anyone has been BETTER than Prince, as far as popular music goes.

If Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney are considered as forerunners to the question, it has to be noted that they dropped down quite a peg in their "old age" just as Prince has been accused of. We can't look at them with Rose-colored glasses on as though they were at their peak for 40 years.

Tbo, I don't get the Paul McCartney praise. He has insane longevity, but...

Stevie is definitely worthy, but he stuck with his mostly only one genre for his whole career. He was excellent at it, I know. But when you think Stevie, you pretty much are stuck in RnB or Soul. You think Prince, you can be in RnB, Soul, Rock, Jazz, Dance, etc.

And I wouldn't even consider Michael Jackson - even though I am a BIG fan. He didn't write most of his stuff and I believe most of his biggest hits were written by someone else. And obviously, he didn't have much to do with playing any music. I do admit, though, he was EXCELLENT at what he did.

McCartney's latest record is really excellent. Really. Far better than many records I have heard this year. I am not specifically a McCartenty fan either.

Prince is the best of all time. Name another musician/artist, and I can tell you why Prince has got them beat.

-

Bottom line: you can find artist that can do a few things better than Prince, but there is absolutely no one that can do all things better than Prince. He's the most versatile, well rounded, music talent there has ever been.

I actually agree wholeheartedly but I like devil's advocate. Have to leave out legends and socalled Prince contemporaries like Michael Jackson and Madonna because they lose right off the top for not beaing real instrumentalists or composers or really producers for that matter.

Give us reasons why Prince is better than:

James Brown

David Bowie

Paul McCartney

John Lennon

Jimi Hendrix

Sly Stone

Marvin Gaye

Stevie Wonder

Elvis Presley

Chuck Berry

Little Richard

Great! Let me know what you think.

(And for the record, there are a few moments on Kamasutra that are nice, like The Ever Changing Light. Also I love The Plan in its Emancipation-edit.)

Stevie and Prince are my two favorite artists. Prince gets the edge based on the complexity of his overall skills. Prince's catalog is so deep when you factor in the vault, side projects, outside production, etc. As a live performer, there is no comparison- P has the element of danger, spontaniety, stagecraft, beast on multiple instruments, dance, the freak factor and an innate daring that is legendary.

There has never been an artist with the complete complex package that P represents.

How is MJ not a "real producer"? He solely produced and wrote a huge amount of his back catalogue.

You don't have to be an instrumentalist to be a songwriter or producer.

You dismiss MJ but list Elvis, even though he never wrote a single song. And James Brown was not really an instrumentalist either.

If you're looking for diversity, song writing, and showmanship over a long period of time, I'd have to throw Beck's name into the ring. He's a sliver or two under a Prince or a Stevie Wonder. Although he has been popular at times, like Prince, he has purposly walked away from the mainstream. I believe his influence is felt today as well.

Let me start this by saying, I adore every single artist you mentioned. This is darn near my list of all time favorites.
-
James Brown-
Prince has a much wider range of style and modes than James did…both musically, and thematically. Imo, at his peak, Prince is a better live performer than James. Sure, he borrowed A LOT from James, but he built upon it and did stuff onstage not even the Godfather would/could touch. “Head” live? James wouldn’t have messed with that?
-
David Bowie-
The only one who comes close to matching Prince in terms of talent, musical range, and sheer style. Still Prince never relied on an outside producer for his best/most successful work. Also, Prince is better than Bowie onstage.
-
Paul McCartney-
Paul is a crucial part of The Beatles, but that legacy still involves (at least) 3 others and outside producers. Paul is amazing and is a better song writer than Prince when it comes to pop/rock. That said, Sir Paul isn’t as good onstage as Prince and, unless I am deaf, has not the range of musical styles. Prince can go Around the World in a Day, but can Sir Paul do a Housequake, or Erotic City?
-
John Lennon-
See above. I think (like most baby boomers) Prince owes a lot of his anti-authority, unconventional, ideas to Lennon. Also, Prince could have damn near had a “bed in” with Mayte. That era was very John and Yoko.
-
Jimi Hendrix-
Prince has a better voice, better dance moves, is a better songwriter and overall musician. That said, he owes as much to Jimi as he does to James. Prince simply built on what Jimi’s thing was and expanded the palette.

Marvin Gaye-
Marvin didn’t rock and roll. Prince can do Marvin’s thing by turning out the ladies drawers with a soulful bedroom ballad, or he can do socially conscious. He can also tear it up on guitar like a metal god.
-
Stevie Wonder -
For all his genius, Stevie mostly stayed within (an immeasurably expanded) R&B and soul music. Also, I dispute anyone who says Stevie is better live than Prince. I’ve seen both live and Prince was better.
_

Elvis-
Didn’t write his music. Wasn’t nearly the musician/instrumentalist that Prince is. Also, Prince was better live than Elvis (who had moments of awesomeness onstage early in his career and in the late 60’s /early 70’s).
-
Chuck Berry-
Though he has it in the guitar and sexual prowess department, Chuck didn’t have Prince’s range on record or onstage. For being a Rock N Roll pillar, he was fairly one dimensional.
-
Little Richard-
Same as above. The father of Rock n’ Roll is owed everything for starting it all, but you’ve see one Little Richard show, you’ve seen them all. No doubt he tears it up. However, even Little Richards biggest hits sound more or less like his other biggest hits. Little Richard is far more one dimensional, musically, than Prince is. That said, Prince owes about 65% of his look to Richard.
-
Sly Stone-
-
Prince is a better songwriter. Also, Prince is a better live performer. He can do what Sly did onstage and then some. Compare the Lovesexy tour to Sly's most wild moments onstage.

I wouldn' say "better", per se.

Prince has tried almost everything and is still trying to improve. (the way i see it, anyway)

He is also the best at seduction from any artist iv'e had the pleasure to witness.

If you've seen it first hand, then you're hooked and this question from the OP is mute...

.

however, the only person i can think of that would be right there in the running is Trent Reznor.

If you may agree, then i think i might have a friend here lol

.

Prost!
