Anyone feel like expressing their love for 'If I Was Your Girlfriend'?

This is probably my single favourite Prince song. I always come back to this one. The lyrics and meaning are just incredible. His delivery, the production, the vibe, it's all just perfection. I absolutely fucking adore this song like you won't believe! lol

I have a feeling that this is THE fan favourite, let me know what you think.

I got two sides... and they're both friends.

The concept, lyrically, is just genius. The subject is so relatable, yet I've never heard it expressed in any other song, before or after.

To me, it's the most grounded and sincere expression of love from a man to a woman I have ever heard in a song. Seriously guys, I can't be the only one who thinks this song is just fucking INCREDIBLE?

The way the title lead people to add gay connotations to the song is just the icing on the cake. The genius starts at the title with this one, and continues long after the final beat.

I got two sides... and they're both friends.

Him showing his vulnerable side usually makes for fascinating songs. This is one of those occasions. I love this track to death. The song writing is amazing.

Yeah, totally, it's beautiful, I'd write a lengthy about the various aspects that make it so wonderful, but you've covered what I was going to say pretty well, so I won't bother

One if his best, for sure. The fact that it's Camille singing this to his girlfriend just takes it to another "weird Prince" level. Intimacy between two people is the message here. Wowzers.

It's such a unique perspective for a love song. I really think that's the songs biggest strength.

'I mean, could we go to a movie and cry together?
Cause to me baby, that would be so fine'

'I said I want to be all of the things you are to me
Surely, surely you can see'

'If I was your one and only friend
Would you run to me if somebody hurt you even if that somebody was me?'

Those are some of Prince's finest lyrics right there. They absolutely kill me. Especially when you're in a relatable situation.

I got two sides... and they're both friends.

Amazing song. It's like a battle between Prince and Camille.
Prince yearning closeness with his girl that transcends sex. Camille becomes the devil on his shoulder reminding him his lust will always prevail.
It's a tale of frustration.

This is, in fact, the greatest thing he's ever recorded.

It encapsulates everything we love about Prince in one song.

Falling leaves will appear to them.. Like slow-motion rain..

Absolutely brilliant. Definitely in my top ten!

I love this song too. It's food for thought. I often wonder what it would be like if i was a dude and best mates with my boyfriend for sure.

Also, thats quite true about nobody but Prince touching on the subject as we're aware of. I think its one of those things Prince and only Prince could make a song about. I can't imagine any other artist making a song like it.

My icon is a picture of P i did based on the song smile

I remember hearing it for the first time on the radio in 1987. I was as much confused as intrigued by the weird sound and knew right then that Prince was really special and bold. I had never ever heard anything like this before. And ever since. The live versions don't do it for me though.

I think this song along with Anna Stesia, Joy in Repetition, Automatic and some others belongs to the core Prince achievements recording- and songwise.

Just a few days ago I talked with a good female friend of mine about this song as an example for someone expressing the transcendent qualities of sex. You know, when you lie together with your partner after intensive lovemaking, I have the most amazing thoughts and insights, spiritually especially. And Prince expresses this so well when he says: "... and together we stand the silence, and we try to imagine what silence looks like ..." This is so wonderful: in the midst of all the trouble and doubts with love in our time, there is this moment of clarity and bliss after the act that transcends it all and gives you a window to something beyond. And you can experience it together! This experience belongs to the deepest and most profound in life I think. It's existential, not mere hedonistic. Heidegger would be proud of Prince I guess.

Total classic. I couldn't stop listening to it when I first heard it, it send chills up my spine. Just a total, total amazing masterpice. Shame it failed in the US, where the song title itself was a turn-off. This song alone propels Prince high up in the Best Songwriters of All Time department

Always in my top #10 and even after listening to it for over 20 years I was mistaken on one of the most memorable lines: "... would you run 2 me if somebody hurt u even if that somebody was me?"

I always thought it was "... would u run 2 me if somebody hurt u even if somebody that beat u was me..." blackeye

Double dumb-ass on me!

It was another user here, years ago, that pointed out my mistake and commented that the song wasn't written by Chris Brown (the thread wasn't long after the rihanna beatdown).

After everything I've heard this song is still my #1.

I agree that it is flawless and the SOTT movie version is even better.

He sings with such passion there!

This is my favourite Prince song of all time, simply. Everything about it is amazing; the sincere and beautiful lyrics, the intense, passionate and sincere delivery, and the music; something never heard before or after.
