This is my favourite Prince song of all time, simply. Everything about it is amazing; the sincere and beautiful lyrics, the intense, passionate and sincere delivery, and the music; something never heard before or after.

Goospumps everytime smile

My Favourite P song ever... love it... can't imagine another artist ever coming close to making a song like this

It is one of the very best Prince songs, definately in my Top 5 Prince tunes ever!

I love how it starts, the beat is Linntastic, the way the song progresses is great and the lyrics are outstanding. I wish his lyrics were still at this level. I agree live versions never really did this song justice.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

A true classic and one of my all-time favourite songs. Also one of the most influential on me creatively as well.

When pressed to name the best cut of prince, this is the 1, I'll own to.

The whole track is wonderful, thought provoking.
It's rare that anyone hears it n'doesn't form an oppinion, one way or another.
It unsettles the homophobic, so alluring it troubles the superficial, just a very powerful song.

I sometimes wonder if he knew what he was doing when he put this one together.
The ballad of Dorothy Parker. Strange relationship, are adorable too, but they don't have the naked courage of this 1. I love it.
small circles, big wheels!
I've got a pretty firm grip on the obvious!

I don't think P will ever write lyrics like that again. If anyone questions P's writing abilities this is my go-to song.

This seems like the true fan's NUMBER 1. So much love/appreciation for it. I don't think it's ever been top of the countless polls over the years though confused

I think Dorothy Parker and Strange Relationship are pretty complex too. All of them have a somewhat sinister feel. I love how IIWYG goes unhinged towards the end.

The wooh is on the one!

Ahah I thought I should mention this here as it has a 'outsider' view on the subject. I was in class today at uni and currently, we're working on a brief to design characters to advertise products. Anyway, one person was having issues with their character looking too androdynous and our tutor Pete mentioned Prince because he knows how much I like him and I was sat directly infront.

He made a comment along the lines of 'y'see only Prince could write a song called If I was your girlfriend and get away with it! See!' and he pointed to a picture I had of him up on my screen.

I guess I thought I should share, lol.

Yeah, I'll tell you in PM if you want to know what uni lol.

I'm studying animation and illustration.

It's cool you're doing music! I wish I had some form of musical talent though, lol. I've played bass for 2 years now but I'm kinda pissed off that my dad who's played guitar for over 30 years never forced me into learning an instrument from day 1 like some parents do lol

This is the song that transformed me from your everyday "Purple Rain" Prince fan to a Prince superfan & aficionado. Up until that point I hadn't truly realized his genius. SOTT woke my ass up.

I've always loved this song. It's just incredible, so beautiful. Just a whole other level. The picture disc is one of my prized possessions. I'd love him to bring it back, a full version on the next tour please!

My top ten always changes but IIWYG is #1 everytime.

As great as it is...it should have never been released as the second single. It hurt the commercial momentum of Sign "O" the times, well that plus no video in the US for the first 2 singles and the price back then for a double album/cd didn't help either. IMO second single should have been U got the look to pop radio/Adore to Urban radio.

can I please get a remaster of that also!

it's got absolutely every ounce of prince's genius in every aspect of this record, and its one of the most perfect, initmate songs ever written. he says the things out loud that you think in the back of your head when you're obsessed with someone and you can't stop thinking about them smile

i get the sense that he's watching someone from afar...and never actually connects with his object of affection...

I also get chills everytime. Probably his best lyric (and certainly the one I most relate to) and the playfulness of the vocals, and then that rush at the end and then the dropping of everything but the beat and then the repeated lines about what silence looks like, ending on the "Yeah, we'll try."

I've said The Beautiful Ones is my all-time favorite, but I could probably say If I Was Your Girlfriend just as easily. After that, it's a fairly marked drop to the next group. Those two can stand up to almost anything else.

And probably one of his worst singles released, and yet it's one of the best songs he's ever written.

Just goes to show....................

Classic Prince, from the top shelf. When I first heard it on the album back in '87, for me it cemented Prince as leading the pack creatively - bringing new sounds to contemporary music. And with "Shockadelica" as the B-side?! Double-nice.

I loooove it....its beautiful and wonderful. For some reason however, I haven't heard it in many moons... Isnt that strange...how songs u absolutely adore kind of fall off your radar, confuse same thing happened to me with here.

'same thing happened to me with here' what do you mean?

Sorry for the lag on this.

Same thing happened to me with the song 'here'...from mplsound. I fuckin dig that song to no end, but somehow it fell off my radar. Somehow a song I like slightly less...valentina...has more spins than 'here'. Songs I loookve just fall off the radar somehow. Wasted kisses as well. Maybe its cuz they're on lackluster albums...I unno...sott isn't lackluster.

This is, in fact, the greatest thing he's ever recorded.

It encapsulates everything we love about Prince in one song.

yes

Not everything.

It has no guitar.

The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter
No Child's a failure
Until the Blue Sailboat sails him away from his dreams
Don't Ever Lose, Don't Ever Lose
Don't Ever Lose Your Dreams
