Guys, I'm like King of the Naysayers. But Clouds and U Know are growing on me

I was on a flight from MPLS to DC today and I listened to Clouds and U Know several times each. They're really growing on me. Perhaps it was because I had taken a shit-ton of Xanax. But whatever. I'm moderating all my pissy previous posts. For me, the jury is still out and fair for AOA. Not a fan of BCW or Breakdown (it's the lasers).
PlectrumElectrum still doesn't excite me. Sorry.

I've noticed a lot of people saying the songs have grown on them. I think first impressions are rarely a good thing with someone as complex as Prince. I remember disliking "Computer Blue" the first time I heard Purple Rain! Now, it's my favorite song.

I thought Breakfast Can Wait was fun when it debuted back in February.

Breakdown - there's a good song there, but the laser sound effects and poor mastering/loudness make parts of it unlistenable to me. I'm disappointed that it doesn't seem to be getting corrected for the album.

Clouds - I enjoyed.

U Know - I do not enjoy. The singspeaking and overt sampling make it barely a song in my mind.

I'm glad others enjoy U Know - It's beyond skip-worthy to me. The other AOA tracks are cool - love the guitar at the end of Clouds.

It takes some guts to come back and admit that a song is growing on you after despising it on the first few listens, so kudos for that alone.

Maybe I'll try listening more when I'm not severely medicated. But I tell you, I was feeling some grooves. I'm not saying either song is higher than 6 or 7 out of 10 to me, but they're not the throwaway crap I thought they were.

That being said, people who think these songs will help Prince connect with younger crowds are a bit delusional.

Still have to agree that the album cover is a rotten egg.

I'd go even farther by saying that first impressions are really worth anything when it comes to the appreciation of any work of art. How many times have I heard people saying they don't like a song 1 minute into said song? If I had discarded all the albums that didn't impress me at first then grew on me, I'd have missed some of my favorite albums ever.

Dude lol you were so fucking nasty about both songs... your post is hilarious

First... Clouds is the shit

I love it.... LOVE IT

The opening of the song with scanning the radio and then it finds Prince's falsetto harmonizing and transitions into the lin drum and baseline. Turn that shit up... great opening!!Do you know I kept rewinding that shit on my system

CLOUDS is the shit... I don't love the chorus I wish he had let the girl sing kiss on the neck and the flower on the back business... but that’s Ok

I love the female vocal... very strong... and the spoken part is cool... that that base that is dancing around her. I even liked the signature guitar at the end just in case anyone was mistaken that it was a Prince record

I love Clouds... I have said I loved a new Prince record since LotusFlower

I will say it again Clouds is the shit... turn it up!

Dance... Let me see you dance

A lot of Prince's music takes me a while to appreciate, to sink in. Some songs or albums resonate with me straight away, others take time.

Clouds and U Know are growing on me too, there are nice elements to them amongst the generic and rip off. U Know is better than the Mila J version of the groove. Clouds is weird and the guitar solo is lovely.

I love The Breakdown even with the lasers, but the loudness is an issue and so is the singing; the live Montreux version was much better delivered.

However, I don't feel the 3EG songs at all and have tried now for a long time to like songs like LOL or FULU but not getting into it at all. Whitecaps is the worst so far, I can't stand it, even worse than LOL to my ears. The 3EG ladies are lovely but their music is not my thing.

Overall looking forward to listen to AOA as a whole and not so much to PE.

...every night another symphony...

We chill folks who head bop like we breath don't need no Xanax to enjoy the elemental message-massage that is Clouds.

In a way it's like a modern Don't forget to stop to smell the roses. So it's fitting that le Roi de la saucisse was stuck on plane, forced to slow down his heartbeat to a tempo that lets him listen with his body and not what I am sure is a permanently over caffeinated mind that won't stop thinking!

Hey, man, sometimes the funk just hits you. What once sucked balls now makes your balls tingle. We all have the right to change our opinions.

The Breakdown is still bullshit. I mean, lasers? WTF.

Good to her someone is willing to keep an open mind. I didn't understand the tidal wave hate for the new songs on this site. Some others should reexamine their knee jerk venomous reviews, many of which are so overly dramatized it's like watching bad reality tv actors chewing up the scenery. I'm enjoying the new songs, it's been a long wait. Peace & Luv

that is true. there is a Bowie songs called 'quicksand' which on first listen you think, god this boring. then you listen again and again and now it is my favourite ever song. so inspirational and melodic.

but i doubt any of this new prince stuff will ever get to that level

I think the point was that in general songs that one can initially find to be lacking in substance can reveal their hidden depths in subsequent plays, or at least one becomes accustomed to the asthetic elements of a song that turned one off before, and maybe even grow to appreciate them. It didn't seem like a comparison between the two songs to me, rather an example showing the process of coming to appreciate a song one doesn't like originally. But yeah, there's no contest between the two songs.

Some of P's best material is challenging or misses you at first.

I remember hearing Sign O' The Times (as the lead single?!?) for the first time on the radio. I was completely underwhelmed and couldn't imagine what the record companies were thinking. Then it hit me, but not in that "huge single" way.

I think I'm going to like Clouds for a while. Has a lot of P tropes I enjoy.

Breakfast Can Wait is an average RnB affair with a try hard gimmick tapped onto the end.

The Breakdown is a decent, but over hyped ballad.

Clouds is an excellent RnB song, half accessible and half deeper statement.

U Know is one of the worst "productions" he has ever released. Screams desperation and try-hard.

Plectrum Electrum:-

FixUrLifeUp is unbelievably average.

PretzalBodyLogic is cheesy, girl pop rubbish with some slightly appealing instrumentals.

FunkNRoll Is classic 80's Camille funk....minus the creativity.

Whitecaps is utterly childish and poorly written and produced.
