After all, the album is called

"Art Official Age"

as in Artificial, right?

that's my assumption.....

YES!!! Thank you for restoring my faith that someone still understands metaphor and double entendre. Many, it would seem, are too lazy to actually listen with an analytical mind and would just prefer to assume Prince is singing about some airy-fairy shit and "don't have it in him to write good lyrics no' more'.

Sounds to me like he had/has an online relationship. hmmm lol

We're getting high on something that doesn't require clouds, no
We don't need no clouds, no.

I want to give you something baby but I wonder does it really even matter if it ain't on a stage? If it ain't on stage I don't think it really matters in this brand-new age.

When life's a stage in this brand-new age how do we engage?

Bullying just for fun, no wonder there are so many guns, maybe we're better off in space.

Oh. And for some reason this song reminds me of 'EXTANT' for some reason. Sounds FUTURISTIC.

I'm starting to think Clouds isn't meant to be a so much a song as a sort of interlude. It's the kind of track that shows up on concept albums somewhere to tell the story or set the theme or info-dunp a lot of exposition to get the point/plot across and tie the sounds/songs together. There's a bit of a song in there, but not much. Like some of those instrumental interludes on The Rainbow Children that had Darth Vader talking over them in case you were too stupid (or too lucky) to pick up on what the whole thing was about.

Well...well.

It's not that bad. When I heard the snippet on Itunes, I didn't like it. Listening to the whole thing has changed my opinion.

I might even say I like it. I haven't bought a Prince album in 16 years, until now. I've heard every Prince album in between but this is the first one I've bought.

If you really listen to the music, it's interesting. Also, his lyrics aren't bad either. I wonder how the rest of the album will sound.

I can almost hear Lianne La Havas smiling when she's singing and doing the voiceover.

I guess a completist could add the Live Out Loud single in there as well.

TT.

[Edited 8/26/14 11:18am]

+1 which I was hoping may have been included on Plectrum Electrum

Dammit. I missed out the extended version of Laydown as well.

Came up with a separate plylist of all the live/rehersal tracks released during the same time:

1. Let's Go Crazy

2. Something In The Water (Does Not Compute)

3. Plectrumelectrum

4. The Dance Electric

5. Dark

6. Days Of Wild

7. Mutiny\Ice Cream Castles

8. Old Friends 4 Sale

9. Chapter & Verse

10. Bambi

11. I Can Never Take The Place Of Your Man

Would make a cool double CD package with the other tracks.

It's a good song, we'll see if it's great after a while.

Half the hardcore Prince fans are waiting for a song Prince will never record, because in order for it to be great, we'd have to wake up in 1984 and all their cool friends would like it.

That's it, really! It's not currently cool to be into Prince.

Actually, the whole "it's not currently cool to be into Prince" thing resides in the bubble of the Org...In the real world Prince steps onstage and gets a standing ovation at an awards show without even performing...In the real world he sells out gigs in hours...In the real world his much younger musical peers revere the man...In the real world he still gets headlines online for posting a meme aboutLil Mo talking slick about him...In the real world he sold more tickets than Beyonce (the biggest "current" star on the planet) at the Essence Festival...

Trust, the Org will make you think everyone hates Prince....lol

Don't fall for the bitching bullshit...

clapping

I agree, I v been a Prince fan for 30 years, don't get people saying Clouds is shite! I really like it. Don't get what people want always complying about everything he has done over the past 18 months.

Listened to it some more and the song has elevated from being OK to being really quite good. I especially like it when the English chick starts singing. From that point on, the song becomes a lot more interesting. The first half is still a bit "Prince by numbers" but the second half really is quite different to what he has done before imo.

.

It does sound like a song designed to fit into an album with a narative and concept (space aliens breaking down the world with lazers and Prince being bought back from the clouds of cryogenic sleep to save us before breakfast! biggrin ). This I like.

I very much like it. Has a Lovesexy vibe to it. Sounds fresh to me. I only wish it had one or two more verses as the 'story' doesn't really go anywhere. But the groove is the type that only he can create - perfectly spaced and layered. Funky as. Love the English lass in the breakdown sections.

I totally agree. It sounds very fresh and breezy, probably because it is so perfectly spaced and layered like you say, very well mastered indeed. Although quite electronic this makes it feel very organic too because it flows so well. And brilliant base and a tremendous groove to boot!! Sooo funky!! I can't but nod my head to the beat smile.

Also with some interesting twists throughtout (and the lack of a chorus as such) helps it to not become predictable and provide little details to love. And Lianna Le Havas, divine smile and although it does not lead anywhere in a way it does in some other ways with the lovely guitar ending. And finally the lyrics are certainly better and more interesting this time around...

This track is in the vain of Breakfast can wait and sticky like glue but much better in my opinion. And it begs the question why BCW is also on the album...

In that case, maybe the tattoo line is not about actual ink, but about being stuck with needles. "Tattooless and proud" or drug free.

I don't know why I like this song but I do. It is just a retread of the same groove of the last 5 years but I keep wanting to replay it on my iPhone. However it's no classic and is kinda a weak single for such a long awaited album release. Still it's got my toes tappin.

Well this is going in the right direction. I've actually played this song a couple of times now and enjoyed it, which is something that hasn't happened for a long time to be honest.

I'd change a few sounds if it were up to me. I can't stand those poppy piano sounds such as the one around 2:56. Make that a nice pissed off Oberheim sound and you've got something else..

I do like the bass. It's funky as hell, and really pushes the song along.

Not so sure about the lyrics. It seems kinda 1 dimensional for the most part. I do like the bit about clouds.. could be about the internet cloud, as well as weed. People get high on both, so if that was intentional, then well done smile

Chords seem to be mostly Em, D, C, D.. Kinda like something you'd play in an uninspired moment, but P manages to create an entire song out of it, which is an art all by itself. Same thing goes for 'the breakdown' btw.. just 4 chords over and over.

Anyway.. Pretty happy to have something that at least for a day I find enjoyable to listen to.. can't wait to hear the rest of the album smile

I read a few comments here and in the other thread about people hating the lyrics, but I actually find them quite good and mature for Prince. I know people are more accustomed to him talking about sex but for those of us in relationships I actually like the message of kissing someone on the neck and rubbing her on her back.. and actually "connecting" with people instead of on the "cloud" and making all of life a "stage"... I found myself singing the lyrics randomly and thinking finally something from him that I can kinda relate to.

"CLOUDS" : lyrics, not 100% exact.

You should never underestimate the power of
A KISS on the neck, when she doesn't expect
A KISS on the neck, when she doesn't expect,
A KISS on the neck
And every time you catch her singin' in the shower
You should go and get her a flower,
Don't matter what they what they are
Just rub her on the back, rub her on the back, rub her on the back

In this brand new age we do everything
Invest in our heart,
All of our lives' a stage
Everybody stops, reality so blurry
If you scream out loud, loud
Top of your voice be higher than the crown (no)
Tattoo-less and proud, yeah
We'll get to something higher that doesn't require CLOUDS
No, we don't need NO CLOUDS, NO

You should never underestimate the power of
A KISS on the neck, when she doesn't expect
A KISS on the neck, when she doesn't expect,
A KISS on the neck
And every time you catch her singin' in the shower
You should go and get her a flower,
Don't matter what they what they are
Just rub her on the back, rub her on the back, rub her on the back

I'm gonna give you something baby
But I wonder does it really even matter if it ain't on the stage
If it ain't on a stage, but
I don't really think it matters in this brand new age

When life's a stage, in this brand new age
How do we engage?!
Bullying just for fun,
No wonder there's so many guns
Maybe we're better off in space!

[Speaking]
"Mr Nelson, Mr Nelson, can you hear my voice?
Sir, we know you're a little bit groggy
And you're probably going to find it hard to speak
But don't try to talk or process too much now
We just want to let you know that the medication you were given
Has put you in a suspended animation for quite some time,
Well, in fact about 45 years
But where you are now,
Is the place that doesn't require time
That saying, you are completely safe
And we are here to help you.

You should never underestimate the power of
A KISS on the neck, when she doesn't expect
A KISS on the neck, when she doesn't expect,
A KISS on the neck!
It's in my power to love you,
It's in my power to love you
It's in my power to love you

It's in my power to love you
(Hot ! hot!)
