Well this is going in the right direction. I've actually played this song a couple of times now and enjoyed it, which is something that hasn't happened for a long time to be honest.

I'd change a few sounds if it were up to me. I can't stand those poppy piano sounds such as the one around 2:56. Make that a nice pissed off Oberheim sound and you've got something else..

I do like the bass. It's funky as hell, and really pushes the song along.

Not so sure about the lyrics. It seems kinda 1 dimensional for the most part. I do like the bit about clouds.. could be about the internet cloud, as well as weed. People get high on both, so if that was intentional, then well done smile

Chords seem to be mostly Em, D, C, D.. Kinda like something you'd play in an uninspired moment, but P manages to create an entire song out of it, which is an art all by itself. Same thing goes for 'the breakdown' btw.. just 4 chords over and over.

Anyway.. Pretty happy to have something that at least for a day I find enjoyable to listen to.. can't wait to hear the rest of the album smile

[Edited 8/27/14 11:40am]

There's different type of complexity involved in the song that doesn't have that much to do with what type of triads you can play on top of it throughout. However, thanks for pointing out those chords anyway. Playing them over the song works pretty much throughout it.

Btw, I personally find that using simpler chords on the keyboards and guitars when there's more stuff happening otherwise is pretty smart. There's no real need to double those additional voices with the chords when other instruments are doing them (it's something of a mixing issue, as well).

I'd love to hear an extended remix with this single, a la Mountains or Anotherloverholeinyohead. It's been awhile since we've gotten remixes where he takes a song in a whole other direction. I am quite enjoying the song all on its own, but an extended remix version would put it over the top.

Are the chords perhaps more complex, but distributed among different instruments? For instance something is added in the bass that changes the chord?

"CLOUDS" : lyrics, not 100% exact.

You should never underestimate the power of
A KISS on the neck, when she doesn't expect
A KISS on the neck, when she doesn't expect,
A KISS on the neck
And every time you catch her singin' in the shower
You should go and get her a flower,
Don't matter what they what they are
Just rub her on the back, rub her on the back, rub her on the back

In this brand new age we do everything
Invest in our heart,
All of our lives' a stage
Everybody stops, reality so blurry
If you scream out loud, loud
Top of your voice be higher than the crown (no)
Tattoo-less and proud, yeah
We'll get to something higher that doesn't require CLOUDS
No, we don't need NO CLOUDS, NO

You should never underestimate the power of
A KISS on the neck, when she doesn't expect
A KISS on the neck, when she doesn't expect,
A KISS on the neck
And every time you catch her singin' in the shower
You should go and get her a flower,
Don't matter what they what they are
Just rub her on the back, rub her on the back, rub her on the back

I'm gonna give you something baby
But I wonder does it really even matter if it ain't on the stage
If it ain't on a stage, but
I don't really think it matters in this brand new age

When life's a stage, in this brand new age
How do we engage?!
Bullying just for fun,
No wonder there's so many guns
Maybe we're better off in space!

[Speaking]
"Mr Nelson, Mr Nelson, can you hear my voice?
Sir, we know you're a little bit groggy
And you're probably going to find it hard to speak
But don't try to talk or process too much now
We just want to let you know that the medication you were given
Has put you in a suspended animation for quite some time,
Well, in fact about 45 years
But where you are now,
Is the place that doesn't require time
That saying, you are completely safe
And we are here to help you.

You should never underestimate the power of
A KISS on the neck, when she doesn't expect
A KISS on the neck, when she doesn't expect,
A KISS on the neck!
It's in my power to love you,
It's in my power to love you
It's in my power to love you

It's in my power to love you
(Hot ! hot!)

-No matter what the hour

-Quick, fast, in a hurry
-Everybody stars
-On top of your voice would it be higher than the crowd? No.

I don't know who typed these out but they might want to have their ears checked
Also, I posted the lyrics a couple days ago. smile

Speaking of being better off in space...

...there was a bit on the daily show w/ john stewart where a black correspondent was looking for somewhere safe for him to report from...but every city he went to jon told him a story of an unarmed black guy getting shot down by police. So dude finally ends up in space with a space helmet on. Where he 'got pulled' over anyway and accused of stealing his space helmet and the police demanded he hand it over...dude was like 'but I can't...heck I didn't know gen steal it anyways!'

It had me laughing pretty good since I had just heard this line in the 'clouds song'. Being in space ain't gonna help...people be people...

It has no tune at all, as far as I can tell.

Odd lyrics as usual... and just a nice jam.

Can Prince not write a good riff anymore?

I assume that you mean "no tone", not "no tune"....either way, I disagree

I think it's great song from a lyrical and rhythmic standpoint, the song has a message that people can relate to without being too overbearing

No it's not. The production is fantastic, great bass, Linn and more drums, and piano, I love the guitar solo.. a very organic and "fresh" pop-funk production, imho.

I heart "Clouds", the best Prince song in a very long time..
