Serious question: Y'all really think this song is that good!? REAALLY? OR is it just the fact that its a new Prince song? Because I just don't hear it. I dont hear anything phenomenal, musically or lyrically. But I guess I'm hard to please....

It sounds formulaic to me. The Breakdown had more character, a trademark prince song. [Edited 8/25/14 5:32am]

I think people are just excited to hear something new. . Found nothing exciting about this song. Once again, he's just released another R&B tune, soon to be found in the Gold Sealed Collection Vol XII. .

I am equally surprised by the praise being given. This song is lame. The lyrics are contrived and saccharine, the beat totally unremarkable.[Edited 8/25/14 5:36am]

You guys are buggin! This song is pretty dope.

It has a strut a la sticky like glue, but stronger and a bit more fleshed out. No out of place rap either that prompts u to push the 'next' button on an otherwise great song. Not as organic sounding as 'about that walk', another great 'strut' song...but its not the mid-90's anymore either...sooo...
The fool can make that pause in a strut hang intollerably long...give u enuff time to go get yo' cane if u ain't already got one. [Edited 8/25/14 5:38am]

i love it, i love it. totally funked up. was (pleasantly) surprised by the female voice toward the end. kinda, in a weird way, reminded me of the female voice in "automatic." the way it breaks up the groove, but still stays in the groove.
loving it, and I can't wait for the album.

Ahhhh....I see the "fuck R&B" brigade is alive and strong on the Org again...As a Prince fan THIS fascinates me...Apparently Prince's career started with Purple Rain....lol
All jokes aside, from the snippet "Clouds" is def. some funky shit...It sounds clean yet very sparse and a lot more focused than his previous return to the Linn drum....And the lyrics are a vast improvement from some of the more recent songs that have carried his "vintage" sound ...
Oh yeah....Prince is BLACK....Hopefully people understand that the man's base has always been R&B...This was his "sound" before all the PR fans jumped on board and when he went a bit avant garde with Parade...I dig all his musical chambers during his prime years...I like funky Prince and weird Prince...
But on the real. Some of you folks on the Org need to slow down with the "it's only R&B" bullshit...
It def. moves my "rockist" needle....That sideeye..... [Edited 8/25/14 6:18am]

this song isn't bad, definitely better than a lot of the stuff he's been putting out lately. didn't really impress me THAT much, but the guitar solo toward the end is quite nice.

It's a good song, we'll see if it's great after a while.
Half the hardcore Prince fans are waiting for a song Prince will never record, because in order for it to be great, we'd have to wake up in 1984 and all their cool friends would like it.
That's it, really! It's not currently cool to be into Prince.

Bullshit! I like a lot of prince's r'n'b stuff, but I don't think that Clouds is as good as alot of his older material. It's not bad either, but far from being great.

The original version of 2y2d that prince played over te PA in 2013 sounded fantastic. I'm really disappointed that it's not on the album.

Prince is always writing songs, maybe it did not fit the rest of the album. But I bet if it was on the album, someone would find fault. Something about the drums or the vocals. Prince fans are just incorrigible nitpickers.

Nah...I'm calling bullshit...There's a lot of rockist bullshit going on...lol
Prince can't win...He does his own sound and some of y'all will bitch...He pulls out the guitar y'all bitch...lol
"Clouds" is pure Prince...Nothing groundbreaking at all...But a damn good song...And more importantly it seems very focused....Dude is lasering in on this one from the pocket...
I know this dude has been a dick over the years...I get it...But it seems like some of his fans have picked up some dickish, unreasonable tendencies...Not saying YOU fit that bill...We all like what we like...But I can read between the lines with some of the small smattering of comments about Prince doing R&B...
Anyway, party on homie...Hope he gives you your fix in the future...Yep yep...

Is this the new 'single' (if there is such a thing as singles in prince's World anymore)? I like it but it's not particularly catchy. I know some acts make a song available when you preorder the new album as well as the official single. Also, is it lianne La Havas speaking in the song? The singing bit sounds like her, but I'm curious about the 'Mr Nelson' bit. Finally, with this song, The Breakdown, This is what it feels like and Breakfast Can Wait we have half an album which I'll like, but I hope there will be some more uptempo songs as well!

Actually, the whole "it's not currently cool to be into Prince" thing resides in the bubble of the Org...In the real world Prince steps onstage and gets a standing ovation at an awards show without even performing...In the real world he sells out gigs in hours...In the real world his much younger musical peers revere the man...In the real world he still gets headlines online for posting a meme aboutLil Mo talking slick about him...In the real world he sold more tickets than Beyonce (the biggest "current" star on the planet) at the Essence Festival...
Trust, the Org will make you think everyone hates Prince....lol
Don't fall for the bitching bullshit...

Don't fall for the bitching bullshit... Prince gets respect but he's not selling lots of records, so you can't say "hey, what do you think of Prince's new album?" Until you can do that again, some people will never dare to like a new Prince song, they need the validation first.

I really like it. I'm not blown away but I definitely like it, while not specifically original at first it's a solid funk track and starting at 2:30 it evolves into what I'd call neoclassic material It's funky, positive and sophisticated, all the elements that make me love 's music r there! I especially adore that part! I have him singing "It's in my power..." But anyway, thanks for your time. What?

This is silly talk...lol....A lot of the vets are not selling records...This is not they're market...In fact, a lot of the younger acts are having trouble selling records....75,000 copies of an album sold the first week will get you a no. 1 album in today's climate...The business of selling music is now secondary to branding and reality shows....Keep up homie...
The way to gage the success of an act like Prince is what he does on tour and how the industry reacts to him...When he stops selling out shows or showing that he's no longer worthy of a GMA shoutout then u can start digging that ditch...
Until then, keep thinking like selling records matter in 2014...

I wasnt a fan of The Breakdown. I have rarely played it I have played Breakfast Cant Wait and Fix U R Life Up more times I like Clouds and the female vocals are different to the norm

I actually like the RnB sound as so many black artists have lost that soul / rnb sound these days The female vocals are similar to Estelle's vocals on American Boy with Kanye West I like that. Each to their own I guess

This song is in no way representative of what he did pre-Purple Rain, at all, not even a little. Not only did Prince do A LOT of non-R&B before Purple Rain, he did various different things including rock, new-wave, disco, etc.
