What's the Prince song that turned you into a fan?

I don't have a great memory - but when it comes to remembering the time I became a Prince fan - it's like it was yesterday. I write about it here: http://wp.me/p4uiWF-7O

Please share with me the song/time you knew you were a Prince fan for life

I saw the video for 1999 on a top ten show &

the next day was at the record store & saw 1999

on sale for $5.99 which was a great price for a double

disc set so I bought it based on the one viewing

of the video. I played the 2 discs thru without really

having any idea what I was going to hear & by the end

I was a fan. So it wasn't really one song as it was

a whole record.

It was "When Doves Cry" for me. One Thursday night I was sitting at home watching "Top of the Pops" and they had reached a part of the show devoted to what they called the "breakers" - songs that had entered the charts outside the top ten. They played a short extract from each, and I was reading my magazine, half listening, when this song started to play. I'd not heard anything like it before and I stopped reading, wondering who this little guy was, throwing rocks into a lake while this amazing song played. I bought "Purple Rain" on cassette two days later. It had begun.

When i became a PROPER fan?

'Kiss'.

I liked him before then and did own some stuff, but I didn't class myself as a fan as such until then. That's when I went off the deep end. Bought the 7", 12" and shaped picture disc, then i went back and bought as much as I could. Great times.

Im young so some of yall will have to excuse me for I dont have the same experiences but I remember asking my dad about Prince because I heard Adore on the radio. He told me that Prince was the best thing out there in the 80s but that was it. The next day I woke up and there was a Sign O the Times album on my night stand. My dad put it there while I was asleep. I popped it in my dvd player which also played CDs and I immediately fell in love. My dad let me keep the album and thats how it all started. So Sign O the Times was more like the first album that got me hooked.

"Little Red Corvette", but that was in the early-90s. I got the 1999 LP from library.

I had liked some other songs like "Diamonds & Pearls" and "Partyman" before that, but when I heard LRC I just knew I was going to be listening to this guy for the rest of my life.

Probably Darling Nikki.

I mean I was into 1999 and Little Red Corvette and Doves Cry and Lets Go Crazy were huge but the first time I heard Darling Nikki I was like..."THIS DUDE IS NASTY....GIVE ME MORE PLEASE" and proceded to buy all his albums out through Purple Rain.

My mother had bought Prince's second album in 1979 and I had heard some of the Dirty Mind album, but I think it was "Private Joy" from Controversy that really turned me into a big fan.

Yep, this is something we fans tend to forget. We might think of tracks like "Partyman" being "Prince by the numbes" type of tracks in his catalog, but when you're young and you first hear that stuff it sounds like nothing else you've heard before.

When Doves Cry for me. I heard it on the radio and the guitar intro plus Linn beat sounded like nothing I had ever heard before, I was blown away! I bought the single immediately and shortly after I convinced my little brother to ask the Purple Rain album for his birthday. Have been a huge fan eversince!

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

For me, the songs were 1999/ Little Red Corvette, back in feb. 1983, I was 17 back then...

(I remember it was feb 1983, because I wrote the date inside the "1999" double- vinyl album).....

I was so hooked on Prince's music, that was then & this is now, I am not feeling his "new" music anymore...

But back then, it was "magnetic"... it was such a great time to be a fan. wink

Do me baby

My older brother let me go with him to the Parade Tour 1986 in Rotterdam. I was 13 at the time and our seates were way up in the back. People screamed before the curtain went up, and the first song was played with the curtain down. There were black and white balloons in the arena. I was enchanted. At some point he played what I later learned was the song "Do me baby". At that time, dear children, there was no internet nor was there spotify. Since I had to know what that mesmerising song I heard that evening was called, I started buying his records. Piece by piece. The last one I bought was "Controversy". By then, I had happily turned into a member of the purple army, and have been ever since.
