Do me baby

My older brother let me go with him to the Parade Tour 1986 in Rotterdam. I was 13 at the time and our seates were way up in the back. People screamed before the curtain went up, and the first song was played with the curtain down. There were black and white balloons in the arena. I was enchanted. At some point he played what I later learned was the song "Do me baby". At that time, dear children, there was no internet nor was there spotify. Since I had to know what that mesmerising song I heard that evening was called, I started buying his records. Piece by piece. The last one I bought was "Controversy". By then, I had happily turned into a member of the purple army, and have been ever since.

nice story

The first song I could not get enough of was "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad". "When Doves Cry" caused me to seek out all the albums that preceeded it. I was a teen at the time so, I couldn't really get into "Dirty Mind" and most of "For You", but by the time "Parade" came out I had enough product to refer to as "my collection". At that point you could really appreciate Prince's talents because there was clearly growth from the first record forward and, Prince was so youthful at the time that truly the sky was the limit. And then I started discovering little bits of info like Prince wrote "Sugar Walls" and I was hooked. Then you hear that Prince IS The Time. Whhhhaaattt? Yeah, The Time is Prince. People questioned whether Morris was even singing leads. Then The Family dropped. That little jazz instrumental with the funky bassline you hear on the radio sometimes? Yeah, that's Prince too. It's called "6". He could do no wrong, imo, until Crystal Ball. That was the first serious crack in his armour. It got worse when he acted uppity with the NPGMusicClub fiasco. That caused me to pull off the fan glasses and take a more balanced look at Prince, but I still get the same feeling when I hear "WDC" and "Why You Wanna Treant Me So Bad" as I did as a teen back in the day.

Seeing the videos for Controversy and Sexuality in 1981
Never had seen or heard something so raw and funky before
It just got better and better...

International Lover

i remember years back in about 2004 when i first got into prince. I am only 28 now so i was quite young back then. I kept hearing about Prince, musical genius etc. Never thought anything of it. I then heard the title of his new album 'musicology' and thought it was a cool title but never bothered to hear the album.

Then i was watching TV and saw an advert, advertising the hits/the b-sides. and they played several songs, 'raspberry beret, little red corvette, 1999, when doves cry, purple rain etc. i was blown away. I went out the next day and bought the triple CD for £8. went home and listened to it. Then i bought everything and downloaded everything i could in a frenzey! and i have never looked back.

I'd heard and liked lots of songs but I've have to say the songs that turned me from a fan into an obsessive fan would be Erotic City, I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man and Sign O The Times.

Double whammy of 1999 and Let's Go Crazy when I was at high school...it really felt like Prince was other worldly. The excitement I felt was real, don't think it's ever left me.

The first track I heard was 'Cream'. I loved it immediately and still do today, and it turned me into a huge fan of his and therefore made me go back over his catalogue to listen to all of the songs I'd dismissed over the years. Now I'm a huge fan of his work!

Batman was the first album I actually got, but I brought that more to do with the movie, wasn't really into Prince, the album was quite good. A friend had ATWIAD so I borrowed that (loved the album), but The Ladder actually sealed the deal for me, and then went on to get the rest of his albums. Still to this day ATWIAD remains my favourite album.

3 Chains O' Gold.

I had disregarded Prince largely as just a basic pop artist untill I heard that song.

My sister had a boyfriend who was a huge prince fan, he gave me a tape of Lovesexy but I didn't like it at all. Soon after that was all the hype for Batman, I was obsessed with the logo and the movie so I naturally bought the soundtrack and was instantly hooked. I didn't really know it was Prince but when I found out I went and bought everything he had done up to that point and loved all of it. I became a huge fan, collected everything I could.

I've bough every record on release day in every available format since 1989... he lost me a bit during Emancipation (his worst) but I can honestly say I've listened to at least one prince track everyday of my life since I first played the Batman album 25 years ago. I never even bought a different artists album for 10 years unless Prince was involved in it.

He has touched my life in so many ways, I became a designer because of the Batman logo, played "I love u in me" at my wedding and flew back from China to see him in Leeds...

Do or do not, there is no try...

Very positive to read these experiences.
1st Prince song memory is "Delirious."
Was very young but also dig'd 1999 and
Little Red Corvette. Got very serious from
Parade on and was prob too young to have
really understand Purple Rain, I think,
being 14 at the time...

Gett off.
I was already a Prince fan since Purple Rain, but with gett off, then cream, then all diamonds and pearls album I had the real feeling to deeply "understand" all his work. In some way it opened to me a new way to listen o(+> music; I started to listen again and again all his albums and finally all was so 'clear'and perfect.
I love very much that song, I absolutely don't think it's his best song but for me it's the magic key that opened the doors of an enchanted universe.
