I read the writer state a "nod to EWF". I also didn't read that in comparison to Timberlake.

Are you Justin Timberlake posing as a Prince fan on this site? Good grief....JT shouldn't even be in the same zip code as EWF.

"Blurred Lines" with Robin Thicke. Apparently, a sample was lifted from Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On". Prince doesn't have to sample, Prince can make new music everyday. Pharrell isn't a real musician if you have to sample beats and hooks. Not to be cruel, but does Pharrell play an instrument? I remember a video he did with Lenny Kravitz some years back, I thought I saw him behind a drum set, but I am unsure.

No it was not a sample. It was simply created with slightly different chords ( like what he had done with "Give It 2 Me" with Madonna)avoiding samples. All of the instrumental tracks were recorded by Pharrell. He's a trained drummer and keyboard player. He has been producing since the early 90's (along with Chad Hugo). If you took the time to listen to his production discography, you would likely discover that direct samples are far and few between with the Neptunes. Regardless, it's about the feeling, not the tools used. "Real music for real musicians". Bullshit.

I asked a simple question, jerk. I don't need the snarky comments...I'm not into the Neptunes or Pharrell..I am into Prince, hence Prince.org!

I wonder what Pharrell could do with Outstanding. He's perfomed with Charlie Wilson in the past (BET Awards last year) I never knew the Gap Band was on American Bandstand.

Anybody have any clues about when this performace on American Bandstand was taped? Maybe 82 or 83??? Anyway, Charlie Wilson is a music veteran but he let Pharrell do his thing and it worked. Hopefully Prince will consider working with Pharrell to compliment what Prince is already capable of doing on his own....

Agreed. I thought about that a few minutes and it doesn't seem to me that the two songs sound alike. LCD and Gust of Wind aren't at all similar. Apparently, Pharrell is going to perform at the Apollo tonight (Monday). It can be streamed online, just Google it for the web address. I'm sure it will be great.

Prince would NEVER let Pharrell produce him mainly because he is a MALE. The only person he let produce him with a brilliant result was Janelle Monae. Its because he trust & adores her and of course she is a female. I will leave the purple kingdom if he did that. Prince doesn't need Pharrell or any other producer. He really doesn't even need a hit. He is doing just fine without one.

I don't think anyone here is saying that Prince "needs" Pharrell per se. I think what some of us are saying is that they are both very creative and it might be interesting to see what could result in those two working together. But what's this story about Prince not working with male producers?

Does anyone remember 'Change Clothes' by Jay-Z?

That song has Prince written all over it, musically and Pharrell singing-wise. biggrin

Pharrell might be an interesting producer for a couple songs by Prince, but I can't see a whole album of Pharrell producing Prince.

Yeah perhaps there is some Prince stuff lingering in that song. I like that song, not for Jay-Z but for Pharrell. Maybe you're saying that the kind of minimalist sound to it sounds like MN funk?

By the way, I had the wrong date for Pharrell's gig at the Apollo. It's tomorrow (Tuesday) not tonight.

Pharrell is a cool dude, consistent producer, won major points by breaking down and being so vulnerable on Oprah, but he's worked with damn near everyone so unfortunately regarding a Prince collab in my opinion he gets a ummm ho sit down, lol, not needed, i personally havent heard anything groundbreaking in his musicality to warrant a collab of such esteem.

Madonna was slammed by the media last week because she posed in sexy underwear with Katy Perry. I don't think Madonna needs to stop because she's already established herself so if she wants to run with the younger crowd, so be it.

Why should Madonna "quit" when she's still making millions and millions of dollars? lol Every few years, she goes on tour and each tour grosses over $300 million. You don't retire until you can no longer sellout arenas and your fans no longer care about you.Hell, even Cher recently launched a world tour.As long as the money keeps being made, these ladies can go on as long as they like.

well yes and no, Tina Turner mentioned she continued to tour because she didnt feel comfortable retiring without additional monies coming in to keep up with her lifestyle, she mentioned she ended up selling homes she didnt really need and downsized to feel comfortable with her decision of retiring from touring, after she met the love her her life and got married she realized she didnt need all of those things anymore. Tina can continue to sell out arenas and her fans love her yet touring is exhausting so she's done but you're right they can totally go on and on as long as they like=ICON STATUS Love love love Anna Mae heart

Can't believe what i'm reading!!

Happy.....really?! It's a horrendous, flat track along with the majority of his other productions. It's mainstream nonsense. Jesus, for him to produce for Prince....it would be a nightmare come true.

Prince can drop Ol' Skool Company, Laydown Xtended, Sticky Like Glue, Black Sweat, Breakfast Can Wait, etc (all well into his 50's)....Tracks that have what Pharrell and others are trying to do with computer loops, but (as par for the course with Prince) done with actual musicianship.

The fact that Prince is still dropping so many diverse tracks, hip tracks, this far into his career is incredible and he needs no mainstream producer to dumb him down in an attempt to get him in the charts. Prince is an artist....a musician, not a fucking product! He should be keeping it real and attempting to show everyone what real music by real musicians is all about....LIKE WHAT HE'S DOING OR NOT.

Sometimes i wonder if i'm on a Prince site.

Prince singing Happy or Blurred Lines....hahahaha, my god....that would be the most embarrassing move of his career.

Take off the purple shades.... Prince would die to be able to write a song like happy. All the songs you named sucked and were Prince's attempt to be current and he didn't pull it off. Happy vs Black Sweat.... Are you nuts... Your post is laughable Dumb him down... Can you get dumber than Stick Like Glue? The man needs help with his R&B stuff for real.... Beats, lyrics, music arrangements, vocal arrangements, working up a black sweat ... Really? That horrific panting and meow cat calls on Chocolate Box. One word man HORRIBLE He needs help with his rock stuff too but at least with those tracks he is capable of pulling off the live performance because he still has the chops and can play that guitar. Man P is just looking bad these days [Edited 5/29/14 20:24pm] [Edited 5/29/14 20:26pm]

really? eek are you NUTS? Prince has written hundreds of songs that surpass HAPPY by leaps and bounds in songwriting. Lionel Ritchie too, dont let these "recent" cats fool you, many arent writing anything that hasnt been written and written better before, its just a dumbed down version of legacy music. If anything Sia's work can hold a candle along some of the great songwriters of our time.

Behave yourself. You should have fell off the Prince wagon and watched it thunder into the distance years ago then. Early 90s when he started letting shit remixers release their shit product under his name. Still doing it to this day.
You just change the goalposts to suit Prince's attempt to score.
If he did record with Pharrell you'd go with that too and say it's ok because they both wear hats occasionally.
After the spewfest of Fall In Luv nothing Prince does can be as tacky and desperate.
Not that I want it to happen as Pharrell is bland nonsense. Anybody that thinks Blurred Lines is any good needs to grow the fuck up. I'd rather listen to Prince shitting in a toilet after gorging himself on eggs and cabbage water than that pile of rubbish.
A Bontempi organ backing track has more feel.
don't play me...i'm over 30 and i DO smoke weed....

I guess since he's been at the helm since he was 19, it's hard to imagine that he wouldn't have some sort of insecure feelings about Pharrell, especially because P is really hot right now. For those of us who knew about Pharrell ten years ago, we already knew all this time that he was talented. So perhaps it would have been better if Pharrell worked with Prince like ten years ago or something but maybe not in 2014......it's hard to say

lol Agreed, that would probably be too much for him! wink

What could possibly work is if they would start a project together under a bandname, so it wouldn;t be perceived as Prince being produced by Pharrel, but as a project where both of them had an equal input. So that it would be a shared success by two stars who just want to have a good time in the studio and record some good music together. Instead of Pharrell providing Prince with hit material.
