Prince's new material reminds me of the terrible "High" era

Although there's been a song or two that I've thought were okay (Rock n Roll Love Affair, Groovy Potential), overall I think everything Prince has released since in the past few years (Turn Me Loose, Hot Summer, Rich Friends, 3rd Eye Girl crap, Screwdriver, Fall In Love 2Nite, The Breakdown, etc.) is easily the worst stuff he's put out since the era between Rave and TRC -- the "High" era, named after the rightfully aborted rumored album of that name. Most of these songs are bland, lifeless, severely underwritten, terribly produced, and just way to fucking easy for Prince. I used to think that MPLSound and 20ten were bad. But this new stuff makes that shit sound like Parade.

I heard garbage like like Ain't Gonna Miss U When You're Gone, and it reminds me of old tripe like Y Should Eye Do That When I Can Do This. Awful awful awful awful. And even turds like Daisy Chain didn't have lasers, like The Breakdown.

I'm excited about the remasters and reissues (perhaps cautiously optimistic is a better term). But man oh man, I couldn't care less about a new album from Prince at this point. I used to go to Paisley all the time. Followed all the Prince news. Got in fights defending terrible albums like NPS and Rave. But Prince just doesn't have it anymore. He might still put on killer live shows, but when it comes to recorded output, he's coasting at best.

Supercute, You Make My Sun Shine, High, and some of the others: all well produced & arranged songs to me. Maybe the lyrics weren't so great.

Daisy Chain cool? Oh, hell no. That's about as cool as a Full House marathon or scrubbing your grandpa's nut barnacles. Not cool at all.

I like Supercute. Always have. High is one of the corniest songs he's ever, EVER done (I'm still waiting to act like a hooligan, Prince). U Make My Sun Shine had promise, but it's just wooden and stupid.

When Eye Lay My Hands On U was good.

Shit. You know what? His new stuff is WORSE than the High era material. I didn't think that was possible. Sheeeeeeit.

I know everyone things their opinion is the one that matters, but threads like this are tiring. What you do like there'll be 5 others posting that its their favorite since [insert song x from period y], and what you like 10 others will call it the worse thing since Jughead..

All of it makes me super bored... bored2 bored2

Change it one more time..

Let me re4mulate the OP: "Prince's new material reminds me of the wonderful "High" era"" biggrin

Yes it does and that couldn't make me happier because TCI, The Slaughterhouse and related NPGMC tracks are among my favorite Prince tunes ever biggrin biggrin biggrin

I wouldnt go that far. They're ok. Certainly better than Rave and NPS. IMO they would have been better if they were released as albums as opposed to being drip fed through the NPGMC. By the time I had compiled them as albums myself, the older songs had become stale to me making the listening experience uneven.

.

It would be the same if the new Prince/3EG album contains a lot of tracks already released on the 3EG website. The album may not be too bad but for the fact that the songs I have heard already sound old, so the album would be a mixture of old and new making it uneven and crap to my ears.

.

Oh, and to kind of agree with the OP; the new stuff isnt very strong either. I dont know if the production of his output these days makes for a bland experience or if the songwriting is just not up to par. Would BCW sound better if produced in the SOTT era rather than the polished turd it sounds like today?

I agree that many of the newer tracks have the same vibe as the NPGMC era material. It's kind of weird considering he's had far better results production-wise with TRC and some of the 80s throwaback songs. A weird era to revisit.

Then again, many of the songs remind me of 3121 too and I guess that's not an entirely horrible thing.

Apart from Rich Friends I've absolutely loved all the rest of the songs in your list and I'm not a huge fan of the 'High' era. The 3rdEye stuff has been my favourite since Lotusflow3r.

yes I agree that the new songs reminds of the High era and even the Musicology era. But lots of the High era songs are much better than the new stuff imo Pretzelbodylogic, Rich friends, Cause and effect, Lol, Screwdriver, Fixurlifeup etc are some of his worst songs ever.

Yeah, I'm not expecting any great surprises or twists from this new album, other than a WB logo on the back.

There are a few gems among the High era material, but the average quality was low low low. Lower than my giant ape balls dragging on the floor. This new music, it's mostly shit. Throwaway shit. Overly simplistic melodies. Terrible recording and production quality. Fucking godawful lyrics even by Prince's standards. It all just reeks like shit.

The worst part? I've bought every last song and I'll keep on buying them. Even when I hate that. Fuck.

"high" had much better shit than what came after .. high, vavoom, underneath the cream .. even the shitty songs like my medallion and sex me are better than dung like lotuspuker and 3rdEyeHurl .. not that I listen to that era at all anymore .. at least back then I still was naive enough to look forward to each new nugget .. that's not a gold nugget .. prince hadn't beat any sense of hope out of me yet back then .. golden parachute wasn't horrible and i actually kinda like jukebox with a hearbeat .. ahhh the good ole days when prince hadn't quite murdered his career dead yet
