There are a few gems among the High era material, but the average quality was low low low. Lower than my giant ape balls dragging on the floor. This new music, it's mostly shit. Throwaway shit. Overly simplistic melodies. Terrible recording and production quality. Fucking godawful lyrics even by Prince's standards. It all just reeks like shit. The worst part? I've bought every last song and I'll keep on buying them. Even when I hate that. Fuck.

u R the consumate Prince fan who keeps buying and criticizing in the same motion

Yes. You know we're like 70% of Prince's dwindling audience.

ummm, he released something called LotusFlower during this "span of awfulness" that you're referring to and its like REALLY good!

I don't include Lotus. Read again. His new stuff the past few years (going back as far as 20ten) is his worst since High.

If that wasn't clear then I apologize. I like parts of Lotus and can at least appreciate the musicianship.

I prefer 20ten to Planet Earth and Musicology myself.

More recently there's isolated tracks I like, Screwdriver remix (aka live) and Da Bourgeoisie come to mind. But yes you're not wrong, he's coasting on chops rather than inspiration.

I guess what bothers me is his new shit sounds competent, but early creative. And it's his creativity that drew me in to begin with. I marvel at the mind of someone who writes Condition of the Heart and Crystal Ball. I don't come close to marveling at the mind of some who writes Fall In Love 2nite or whateverthefuck.

It's all very subjective in the end. I had an AWESOME ball trippin' 4 months back then on the NPGMC tracks that became TCI and TS (as well as trippin' on NPS and RUTJF). No one can take that away from me biggrin

Supercute and U Make My Sunshine are two of my favorite later-era Prince songs, but agree a lot stuff from that time was formulaic. That's why TRC was such a breath of fresh era (regardless of the lyrics). I do have to say I have been liking a lot of his new stuff...but that last one with New Girl chick was so boring and unoriginal imo. I am hoping that is not an indication of what the album will sound like. Breakdown is a sign of hope.

Yeah the stuff nowadays has boring production for sure, but during the "High" period there was some interesting production, even if the lyrics were bad.

I don't see what all this pissing and moaning is supposed to accomplish. Surely there must be a better use of one's time. Perhaps we should all just take a giant step back, and take a larger view of things. Life is too short for negativity, which ultimately only reflects on the person generating said negativity. Have a cup of tea and go for a walk, do something different and productive.

It' no different, no better or worse than hugging and praising. It's more fun, at least.

Truly a victimless crime. Sticks and stones.

The expression of an honesy opinion, however different from your own, is a good thing.

Enjoy the fun of disagreement and perhaps after the conversation it inspires is over there may even be agreement.

Yeah, I gotta say, I'm not feeling the majority of the new stuff. I was expecting something really special with The Breakdown, after hearing the man himself rating it so highly, but it really ain't that special to my ears. And what the fuck is with that laser shit?? I thought it was some kind of audio watermark when I first heard it.

I quite enjoyed RNR Love Affair and Screwdriver, but that's about it. Fall In Love 2nite is the nadir of his entire creative output. It makes Life O The Party look like All My Dreams.

I like of the new stuff, but not all. I love a bunch of the NPGMC music as well. I grabbed up as much , if not all I could get my hands on. I do hope that the new music that has been released is does not turn up on the new Prince/3rdEyeGirl albums that will hopefully come out very soon. As much music as Prince has produced recently, I think we deserve a BUNCH OF NEW MUSIC. I love and dislike a lot of the recent stuff that Prince has released recently, the best of it is from the live online instrumentals that were released! Great stuff! I haven't heard any mention of those like 'Sex Machine' and 'Chapters & Verse' and a bunch of others. As well as all bands and artist I love....you gotta take the good and the bad. biggrin

Don't u want to come , 3121. It's gonna be so much fun, 3121. That's where the party be, 3121. Y'all can come if u want to, but u can never leave!

I don't think the quality of the High era was particularly low, specifically... Rather the problem was that those tracks were very safe and conventional - even moreso than the tracks on Rave.

I really enjoy listening to Mplsound.

I agree some of his recent songs have a similar vibe to the high era. That era suffered by not having an album and so far so does this era.

I just don't like getting all these singles drip fed. The songs wear out to quickly. I want a lead single and then an album.

Longtime fan here since '82 but it has been a very long time since he put out any interesting music. I do like a few songs here and there but he set the bar so high in the 80s and into the 90s that his more recent output pales in comparrison. The Gold Experience, which came out almost 19 years ago, was his last solid album in my opinion. Since then it is just a decent song here or there and the music just sounds mostly re-hashed. His production used to be so ahead of it's time but those days are long gone. That new single is just plain awful. I'll still never miss a live show though.

Let me re4mulate the OP: "Prince's new material reminds me of the wonderful "High" era"" biggrin

Yes it does and that couldn't make me happier because TCI, The Slaughterhouse and related NPGMC tracks are among my favorite Prince tunes ever biggrin biggrin biggrin

Same here. It sounds like Prince was having a great time with the NPGMC songs....I know I certainly did (and still do). "Breakfast Can Wait" definitely sounds compatible with that era and for me that's a good thing.

biggrin

My only complaint with the NPGMC tracks was the censoring he did to some of the songs for the Chocolate Invasion and Slaughterhouse compilations.

Hi-yo Silver, it's The Bone Ranger!

I enjoy most of the "high" era music. I feel like a lot of the songs could be produced better. A could example is his song WILMHOY, his live version in Montreux 2009 kicks butt. But the NPGMC version is just okay.

99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

I have liked a few of the tracks such as groovy potential, fixurlifeup, pretzelbodylogic, breakfast can wait and such but i think its because im starting to expect less from prince. This is only because of this 3rdeyegirl stuff goin around and his side projects never seem to pan out. Im just glad the man is still making music though it would be nice to have more than stellar songs awaiting. Maybe these albums will serve that. Sometimes i get more concerned with what others think about prince than what i do. With that, im not expecting much from prince so that i wont get my hopes up. If everything turns out great im happy. If not, its no skin off my back.

I've always thought that the "High" era was interesting, because it was Prince trying to re-identify with "Prince" rather than "TAFKAP" (this was right after Rave, remember..).
"High" itself is very much an attempt to re-capture the essence of late-70s R&B Prince in the new millennium, as are several of the other tracks.
The problem with this, by it's very nature, is that it's a rehash. He also finds himself a JW in a hiphop era - meaning the music has lost it's edge and we get "My medallion".
I've often thought that this was a musical exercise to get him back into a certain frame of mind rather than a serious attempt at an album (some of the tracks "Gamillah" & "Daisy Chain", were clearly labelled NPG rather than Prince) And once he heard the results, he decided it would be better to pursue the JW angle.
I suspect he may have had identity issues around this time - he was suddenly dressing like Purple Rain-era Prince again and didn't his engineer HM Buff state that Prince was on steroids around this time and acting erratically?
I really liked some of the tracks from that period (and I think Vavoom would be perfect for 3rdeyegirl)
