What would 1985 Prince have to say to 2014 Prince?

Hypothetically speaking, IF Prince back in his PR days had the opportunity of meeting present day Prince, what would he think?
Would he be proud to know, that standing right in front of him, was his future?
Would he think FALLINLOVE2NITE was funky?
From the vineyards of Lavaux back 2 the heart of Minnesota. U R was, and will 4ever B The Purple Yoda....

I think. You have to flip it. Knowledge comes from experience. What would 2014 Prince say to 1985 Prince?

Don't sign?
Don't conform?
Don't split up the Revolution?
Don't rap?

That wasn't the OP's question. We all know what 2014 Prince would say:

Get a rapper for Parade, Fire Wendy & Lisa, and get out of your CON-tract. Hire a bald female background singer with tons of talent, but make her a crowd flunkee by having her shout "Put Your Hands Up" at your concerts at least 100 times a night.

Actually, it's too much of a Star Trek question for me.

1985 Prince is so much cooler than 2014 Prince. He wouldn't like him very much.

I actually really like this question because you always hear about "what would todays version say to the younger version?" I wonder if he would think the 'non-cursing, suit wearing morphed to Hendrix wardrobe impersonator, giving interviews' Prince was boring.

And for some reason, the scene from the 2nd Austin Powers movie where he meets his time traveling self just popped in my head... "we are sexy bitches!"

That's a bit funny, because around that time 84-85 Prince wasn't really cursing, he was dressing up a lot like Hendrix on many occasions and was about to start wearing a suit for the Parade tour and had actually given a very long interview to Rolling Stone.

Difficult question. Prince has always been spiritual its all over his music, but i think he'd dislike himself for letting it change him. When he got with larry the essence that is prince changed forever. Its like a part of him died. Its okay for one to be spiritual...we all need that, but when it changes you into something unrecognizable thats really sad. Its like a big brother we had died.

Ha, yes. 2014 Prince advice to 1985 Prince would be a real horror show.

1985 Prince should ask 2014 Prince if he knows what an album is. 80's prince knew alot about them.

PR Prince would probably tell 2014 Prince to fix up his afro a little bit more. I saw his recent concert pics with 3rdeyegirl and I was like " What the hell?" It didnt even look like he combed the top of it. Oh..off topic but anyway I also think he wouldnt like the spiritual side of himself.

The Prince of 1985 would say, "I am the master of the time/space continuum, and I have come here to tell U 2 keep on keepin' on. U R even more evolved than I had expected, and I am happy 2 find U healthy. The 'Lotusflow3r' album is pure genius, and I really dig 'N.E.W.S.' and 'The Rainbow Children'.

.

I'm sorry for all of the pain U had 2 endure during the '90s, but it is refreshing 2 see that U made it through, and created far better music in the 21st Century."

.

The Prince from 2014 says, "Thank U. It may take more time 4 U 2 release your Xpectations... why would U Xpect me 2 be any less evolved, and/or static? Um... excuse me, but do I know U?"

"He's a musician's musician..."

In some aspects, yes. As much as I cringe when Shelby ruins a concert, or when Prince goes into Medley mode, and as many AWFUL decisions he makes, I still pretty much love him...WHY?

I don't have "Bart Van Halen Disease." It's a disease where you think every single new song is horrible NO MATTER WHAT. You are only allowed to HEAR new Prince songs. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO LISTEN.

I will freely admit Prince's songwriting is not what it once was. But to hear some Bart types go on and on about how awful his post 1990 songs are is at a comic level of disbelief.

Sure, there have been some below par songs released in the last few years...

But most of Lotus Flow3r is epic. Not MPLSound...which is mostly average or below average Prince...

and most of 3121, Musicology, Planet Earth, and 20 Ten is pretty good with some Epic songs from those albums:

Reflection, A Million Days, The Dance, Fury, 3121, The 1 U Wanna See, Future Soul Song.

I can understand not liking Prince's post 1990 output, but to sit here and trash his every single move? Really? Just like the U2 fans who stopped listening after The Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby. Yes, U2 is not what it once was...who is? But both Prince and U2 have recorded tons of quality songs well after their peak years.

Absolutely. And as a proof of concept of the B-Theory Universe they'd both launch into a song by The Delfonics

That's a bit funny, because around that time 84-85 Prince wasn't really cursing, he was dressing up a lot like Hendrix on many occasions and was about to start wearing a suit for the Parade tour and had actually given a very long interview to Rolling Stone.

And your post is a bit more funny. Not sure how long you've been into his music but growing up in the 84-85 era in Mpls, I can say yes he did curse (is there any chance that where you're at in Finland, that you didn't have as much exposure as others closer did?). And the fact that he cursed at all or sang sexually explicit songs back then, is more than what he's doing now. You really think that back then he would decide to censor Erotic City or not perform Darling Nikki like he's done recently?

Please post all the pictures of when he dressed up just like Hendrix in 85 since he was still, for the most part, wearing Purle Rain stuff. And then see if you can find any pictures of his latest 3EG shows. Not exactly the same. "...and was about to start wearing a suit" So wearing A suit is the same? Gotcha.

Again, I grew up in that era so I know about, and still have, that Rolling Stones issue. Any idea why it was so much more a big deal? Because he didn't give interviews. Now while you're looking for all those 85 looking like Hendrix pictures, see if you can scrape up a few more than 1 interview that he's done recently. Wasn't expecting to hear someone debate that 85 and 14 Prince were pretty much the exact same, but I'm looking forward to you showing me the light.

spelling edit

in "cause and effect"

if i could talk 2 myself back then right now

i'd say "son, u might wanna stick around,

it'd say "u need 2 b a superstar or grow up

And what exactly has he become that is so bad?.....A Prince that doesn't curse, or use explicit lyrics anymore, a Prince that seems more relaxed and less uptight, a Prince that's seems more at peace with himself, a Prince that still holds God near and dear to his heart, a Prince that seems happier with his life right now, than in 1985, etc? Personally, I prefer 2014 Prince to 1985 Prince, because I like that Prince a lot more.

Yeah I remember that one

That is a crappy song but the lyrics reveal a lot

that first piece says to me you should have enjoyed that period not been so quick to rush to the next project or such
