My opinion is that one can alter their behaviors without denying the past.

.

I can see a cohesive approach in not using sexually explicit or vulgar vocabulary in live renditions of songs or new recordings BUT releasing past material, whether previously released or not, as it was at the time. For example I would have found quite outrageous, as a feminist, and absolutely gross, as a mature human being, to have had a 53 years-old Prince release a brand new rerecording of Extraloveable with the "rape" lyrics still in it. Nonetheless while I couldn't excuse that line in the mouth of a 53 years old mature man, I can accept it perfectly in the context of a sexually frustrated, rebelious and provocative 23 years old Prince. Similarly, I think prince would look like a clown singing Head on stage today, while it was a lot of fun in the 80's.

.

I think a reasonable compromise could and should be the release of an explicit version of the remasters and a "family friendly" version that's censored, something Prince already had done in 92 and 96 with prince and Emancipation.

.

My policy is very strict in that matter: though I hardly ever buy music anymore I am resolved to buy the remasters of Purple Rain and other albums on a legal digital platform if the material is offered in an unaltered version, if only to support the remastering campaign and contribute to making it happen for P's entire catalogue instead of only the most successful albums.

.

However, should the albums be available only in a censored version (something I absolutely don't believe is gonna happen, as stated numerous times on this forum), I will not support the project and download it illegaly on a filesharing platform. I won't put any money in a release that'll be of little interest to me, period.

.

I think both Prince and WB are aware of the critical and fans alike bashing campaign that would happen should the albums be released in censored form only, and this is why I don't believe it'll happen. A parental advisory sticker on the cover can prevent whoever may be offensed by Darling Nikki to buy it, and a more family friendly version can be sold for such people if P wishes the material to be listenable by 8 years-old kids and conservative christians.

You and I are ying and yang on this subject. I ONLY want Prince's rerecordings and live versons of the original material. I have very little incentive to buy remasters of songs I already have. Though it would be nice to know they are available, I'm not rushing to scoop 'em up.

Given that The Revolution and proteoge acts are being sidelined, (most likely due to sly bigotry), and that the new 3rdEyeGirl material ranges somewhere between bland and awful, I don't really care too much about the remasters. Since we aren't getting the reunions we deserve, give me the full NO CUSS, re-imagined, ya-know-Do-Me-Baby-was-really-about-The-Stauros tracks. Give me that side of Prince's crazy. I'd rather see him draw a more clear line between then and now if he really has a problem with the content of the source material. I'd rather he fulfill his perfected vision. At some point the original songs are going to get a remaster anyway.

To be honest I don't give a fuck about the remasters in themselves either, I'm perfectly satisfied with my current versions of the albums, which r the ones I've loved for 25 years without the need for enhanced sound (I never had them on vinyl in the first place so it's not like I suffered from the transfer to CD). It's more a matter of principle to me, a sense of history and its preservation. + the problem is that if the remasters r censored the outtakes will too, and that's where the shit hits the fan. But as I said numerous times I don't believe that it'll happen.

ok, I didn't think that was out.

I would assume there is a studio cut (something like GSpot)

I say that because GSpot & Electric Intercourse were to be in the movie and it was redone after he met Susannah

It's possible indeed, I have no idea how many songs Per Nilsen may have missed but 4 Lust for example was unheard of until it leaked, so there may be many versions/songs that we don't know of yet.

I doubt it. Prince was very prolific in those days but still, keep in mind that they were taking acting lessons and had to shoot the movie and rehearse, so he was probably too busy to write a ton of songs.

I´m saying this also because Bobby Z. once mentioned that there weren´t really that many outtakes from the Purple Rain era because first of all they were very busy, and second because most of the stuff that was composed and recorded back then is the stuff that most of us already know, except for maybe a few songs that were leaked later, like the one you mentioned above.

-

That´s why I never understood why Al Magnoli kept saying that Prince wrote at least a hundred songs for Purple Rain, and he supposedly heard them all. This is what he says on the Purple Rain anniversary DVD bonus material but I´d rather trust Bobby Z. than Al Magnoli when it comes to the songs that Prince and the Revolution recorded. Granted, there might be songs that Prince recorded all by himself and Bobby probably wasn´t around 24/7 but still, he probably would know best if there are lots of unreleased songs from that era, and he said there weren´t.

-

Who knows?

Maybe someone should ask him or Lisa and Wendy again...or Fink and Brownmark. Why would Al Magnoli lie? Or Bobby Z? Then again, most of those alleged outtakes have probably been released at some point.

seems he done it again. Throw an excellent show in buzz terms to start off with. Maybe selling some extra tickets in the coming shows .

Wonder if moonbeam levels or electric intercourse will return.

There is a Side effect with this song. Hè can handpick everyone involved in bootlegs when They see them cheer up and sing along.

Hah, there's a point, I'm sure some of the people standing in the front row who cheered will be receiving court orders soon. It took me a while to recognise what was being played, so I think I'm safe.

It's weird that he isn't playing it at the other gigs though, I assumed that he would want to promote the Purple Rain reissue with the song, but it seems he's deciding to be enigmatic as usual.

Back during the Glam Slam LA days he was doing late at night shows. And he was doing many of the songs from the at that point unreleased Gold Exp. And he would tease the audience about how they knew the songs.

It would make sense if Magnoli received some cassettes of Vault material he was told were written for the project. He still should have figured out they were just letting him listen through the archive , because the film doesn't work if the songs aren't story driven, and we also know a lot of the Vault material he could have submitted would have been silly in PR. Something like "Take me with U" could have come from those tapes though which is why it doesn't fit the darker tone of the live material, and ended up getting used twice. A lot of it might have been for incidental background music. We know there weren't a lot of extra songs left on the shelf from the August 83 First Avenue show or any of the other rumored sessions.

Initial tracking for The Beautiful Ones took place at Sunset Sound 9/20/83. Purple Rain (the movie) was NOT finished filming at this point, in fact, they had not even begun filming. However, I believe you are correct in regards to TMWU & WDC. wink

What on earth do you mean 'the hands were fake'?! The performances in Purple Rain were all filmed inside First Avenue infront of a live audience with P and the band miming to the studio recordings. This is common knowledge

Wait--you're saying that they shot the performance in L.A., so they needed fake hands? Is that because people don't have hands in L.A.? Or they're not smart enough to reach up with them? Or that there aren't enough people in L.A. to have enough hands? What are you saying about L.A. folks?
