New topic PrintableI hate the internet - no really I HATE HATE HATE the internet. Been reading on here about this amazing new Prince track called The Breakdown for weeks/months now. Been jealous as hell some of you had heard this (live or otherwise) and I hadn't. Damn even Prince said it was his favourite new song of his on Arsenio... [Edited 4/20/14 9:03am] 'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

I LOVED Colonized Mind and played it to death, until I found out where prince had his "inspiration" from: Since then I can't listen to the song anymore.

Finally managed to hear it via streaming. Beautiful, but oh so sad Ahhhh 'Give me back the time you can keep the memories'.... Lovely vocals, lyrics and minimalistic authentic ear candy. But still it's sad, he doesn't want to go down, down down.
Maar goed, tear down the wall and open the door. Warner Brothers are back in the picture, I-Tunes gets Breakdown before 3rd eye girl site and the song is owned by NPG with exclusive licence rights to WB. I hope he is going to write another social song soon for WB to promote, that names and shames MNCs for their tax evading behaviour. Ecoutez vous Prince?

A very pretty song, definitely a highlight of the recent releases. Laser sounds are bloody weird though, they seem to serve no thematic purpose whatsoever, unless having been rejected from the Great Gatsby soundtrack (as has been alleged) he's now angling for inclusion in Star Wars VII.
Real shame about the sound quality now, I'm a child of the internet generation, so I'm probably not the most sensitive to issues like this, but here it's really noticable and spoils the song. It's not so much the distortion that bothers me, rather the brickwalling kind of "suffocates" the song, and these stark ballads really need their breathing space. Heavenly wine and roses seems to whisper to me when you smile...
Always cry for love, never cry for pain...

Speaking of laser sounds, Prince surely lifted it directly from Bob Fosse.

After a few more listens, i've come to a conclusion that may irk anyone who dares to read what i am writing here... I believe the song refers to his own fanbase. Check it out just one more time with that notion in mind.

Prost! I think it was about Kim Jung Ill. Take another couple listens to the lyrics...I'm being real. Spin it a couple more time and you'll see what im saying. It's about Kim Jung Ill's tragic existence. This may bother people...that prince would write about such an evil person...but just maybe prince saw the man inside...like the person Dennis sees in his son. Prince wanted this story out there...so that then true Kim Jong is never forgotten. Picture a man of great power and wealth. Mansions, palaces and pools. Statues and cases of 'gnac. All of this 'stuff' intoxicated his vision for his country and clouded his judgemet. All affecting the people he loved the most. Then there were parties...the exercises of power if u will...the military parades in capital square, the nuclear tests. The imposed famines and prisoner camps. All this done while suffering the intoxication of power... Affluenza if you will. Burning bridges the whole time. Eventually in a rare moment of sobriety, Kim jong saw what he had done. Immediately his heart was broken. He was confused as to how things got the way they were. He wanted to make amends...fix his beloved country. But all the bridges...the country, the people, had all been to badly burned to be mended. When Kim jong saw this.. He was devastated and killed himself by falling out of the window on the top story of his tallest and most luxurious mansion, so as not to be a lose because all of his 'stuff,'...his 'friends'..., were near. His heart was broken...it was irreparable. State media reported it as natural causes, but Kim Jung, in a devastated state, had committed suicide. It May be true that a 'loose' a case could be made for natural causes. Maybe it was the CIA and a tampered case of 'gnac. However, if one considers just how bad his heart was broken by discovering what he'd done to his people. Just maybe...it was a broken heart. The end of the greaetest unseen love affair since love was but a child and playing hopscotch with cupid. If one fudges some facts and loosens the metaphors.. U can make any song be about anything I suspect the song was a project written for the great Gatsby project as stories suggest. Not a song about a tragic man and the tragic treatment of his tragic fans that he's unable to fix...getting drunk and partying a the time. Obscene numbers of princes songs r fictional and people insist on tying fiction to fact when it inappropriate. [Edited 4/20/14 16:30pm]

Some expect prince to reinvent the wheel with every record release and invariably pick some track that does nothing of the sort. The 'grandiose' elements(lonely piano track) and tools(busting out chorus) blind people into seeing some ultimate amazing song when its just more of the same. Sad loud sad loud bridge sad/traic over. The unexpected/wow on liv's album out does this tune. This song is tragically typical.

I love its sincerity and rawness.
My interpretation is that it is a gospel about how love will inevitably break anyone's ego one day. Love being love, this hurts and it is not a thing you can control.

That was the quickest 4 minutes! That song needs to keep going and going, break into a guitar solo or something. Very nice. Didnt want it to end.

Sounds like it could be amazing live, although I haven't been so lucks as to hear it yet!

I'm as happy as everyone else with the latest developments, but I can't help thinking that I think I'd like this song better as a 3rdeyegirl song (no falsetto, no laserguns and more guitar)

Aerogram said: Oh Prince fans can be so anal retentive, it's like being with a bunch of virgin nuns in Tijuana. Like there's never been a good Prince song with a bit of a compression problem.
This song is great -- so is Fallinginlovetonite by the way. It's not the best he ever wrote? Wake up, it's competing against hundreds of songs he wrote, some of the most sonically iconic of our era. It's like if people had been waiting for Picasso to top Guernica or Michelangelo the Sistine Chapel murals. Prince is custodian of his vision of many of our musical idioms, and his recent output shows him to be in full control of his talents.
He's been pedestrian and phoning it in for too long, no question, but he's also been in an extreme musical purgatory, a contractual alien to his own seminal creations. He did make many mistakes, but you have to acknowledge its painful for any artist to find oneself divorced from one's own higly original and personal art.
You can find flaws as a fan and feel he could have done a little better with this and that, but in the end, as an artist, he's creating what he wants to create just fine with the assistance he wants to get, and he's positioned to be remembered by history as one of the greatest musical prodigy that ever lived.
This is especially true following yesterday's Warner deal, which opens the door to a renewed appreciation for Prince's talent and contribution, given that there is a possibility of documenting almost superhuman feats of creativity and mastery, solely focusing on his golden period.
The rest, what has been issued since he left the label, will in time be rediscovered -- at least the best of it.
[Edited 4/19/14 18:25pm] I agree with your post in a new power soul sense. Prince has sounds in his head and he is able to get what's in his head on to tape with great accuracy. Case in point new power soul. Prince had a sound in his head. Thought/hoped it would be popular...he thought and still thinksnits jammin. He used his skill to get what was in his head a and I suspect very accurately and very skillfuy got it on to tape. Aspects of that record SCREAM talent. The method of getting the hours to tape as they soundesounded obscenly good. Some of the blues guitar licks were as close to bj king as j can get without developing diabetes and doing one touch commercials. Some were cat..some were prince...either way..he was able to capture what he needs to getwhat was in his head out. The album had a defined pallet of colors he was working with to ibtaind a defined sound. And he did it. Only problem...was NO ONE. Not Eben his own mama liked this pallet and what it helped develop. These two new cuts, I notice it most in groovy and breakdown, r different tho and it does seem to be a mastering issue or something. Cuz the cuts sound good. All the elemets r there. They don't reinvent thenweel as I had said earlier...but they good and compelling. Groovy is especially compelling sonically... But they are both all crunched up. At high volumes its much more obvious. Ther as way to much crunching...way too much hiss and pops. U'd think he was making cereal sometimes. Its not all the trax over the last several years either...just some of them. It specifically sound like its something that happened AFTER prince hit stop on the console. Being that es probably not in the business of buying his own songs of the internet, there's a chance he don't know. Also...people do saybthenstuff like this doesn't always matter to prince...as long as the part gets recorded and commited to tape. There's a chance that the person doing it is sub par with the skillset his employer needs him to have. If that's true..U'd think someone would mention what's going on. There's a communication breakdown somewhere and necessary fixesbarent being made. Question. R there vastly diffent methods to master something for internet distribution vs internet distribution. I notice a lack of industry standards across the board...formats, bit rates and equipment quality...phones pads, 'outers all seem to have a lack of standardization. There's thousands of players out there with differing standards vs the hundreds of brands of players prE smartphone and even less with stereo systems which even over shadows the lesser number of manufactures. Now it all apps and there thousands if them with little indusy standard and quality control.

No... really, that's how it SOUNDS. What an amazing screw up:
1. Press and Media Announce his "win" and ownership of masters 2. P. Releases a new, HORRIBLY mastered song
Someday, somebody will tell the behind the scenes details of this "joke". I'm sure it makes sense to him somehow. ---- But average music fan does not give a fuck about this stuff. I also heard a download that had better sound so maybe their is better version out there or it can be fixed. Who cares really.

heres nothing wrong with it at all. If it works it works. It works...I like it. Im just agreeing with the poster b4 me who say people blow it out of proportion. Its good...not grand, or god awsomely epic. maybe some of KCool's "everything-is-the-best-thing-ever" bleeds over onto others on the board. But it happens. I get this vibe from peeps for a while(since it showed up in gigs)...not everyone... That this song was the be all and end all for the 2010's. And..in my humble opinion, it isn't. I doesnt seem worthy of all that hypiest hype of hype that it was floating on. In realize there's subjectibeness in play Jere and that everybody's opinion counts or summjn like that. But it's just a B+ song..not an A or A+ and definitely not an O(utstanding)which I seemingly hear a ludicrous number of people subscribing it to. Not to sound like a Negative Norm or nothing cuz I'm not..I'm DESPRATELY waiting for Plectrum and I suspect I will thoroughly enjoy it. I pray s well as figure that many songs on it will outdo the breakdown for me. Plectrums hot..pretzels hot WOW's hot...Liv showed me so. And I'm sure he hasn't spent hisnwad in terms of good cuts on PE. I enjoy those other three much more than than breakdown.... But no to the orig quest...there nothing wrong with that. That doesnt automatically turn it into the shit. Unlike AYSO...u don't get a trophy for showing up. [Edited 4/20/14 20:48pm]

Prince has done it again! Christened his #Purplearmy with another "masterpiece" as a gift 4 us, after the unveiling of his shocking re acquaintance with the wb. But yet again U talk about the IRRELEVANT SOUND QUALITY!!
It will b more of "The Unexpected" to come!
Prince has made good on his promise 4 a BIG YEAR!
"Open ur mind. open ur heart. a train is going 2 b leaving all day"..... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

It's probably unfair to compare a studio version of a song to multiple live versions especially since the full-length version has just now been released, but 3RDEYEGIRL's performance of this "The Breakdown" from April 15, 2012 in Vancouver is far superior musically and vocally. Donna Grantis' power chords at the final verse where Prince is screaming, Hannah's drum playing and Ida's bottom heavy bass parts throughout the song is head and shoulders the studio version. I love the composition but like many have said the sonic quality throughout the song obscures how introspective this tune is. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR
