Anyone else think that bassline sounds similar to D'Angelo's in Sugar Daddy?

It been mentioned already but this really does sound like he recorded it in 1987/88.

I love this song, absolutely perfect for the Camille style vocal. It's hooky, dirty and funky. I wonder if the low quality of the wav file is adding that black album vibe a bit.

So for me the 3 songs from the album are all keepers. Bring on Plectrum Electrum, but make sure it gets a vinyl release.

The rhythm guitar also reminds me of D'Angelo's rhythm guitar work in recent live performances of Devil's Pie.

With the Camille feel & all I wonder if he just unearthed this from the 87-88 era or it's actually a new composition?

Embarrassingly poor songwriting is all the more exposed by the hideously overblown production. Yikes.

You're wrong. In fact, there's no greater champion of Prince's music than me. I love the VAST MAJORITY of his output, up to and including MPLSound. I thought 2010 had two Prince classics in Beginning Endlessly and Act of God, but I haven't heard a decent song since, and they're getting increasingly bad. I think Prince is the greatest performer in pop music, but I believe he's finished as a songwriter and producer. I hope I'm wrong.

I'm just quoting the lyrics of the song you say is poor song writing. Everyone has different taste and aesthetics, what you consider good (e.g. Beginning Endlessly and Act of God) I think are crap and vice versa (I love 90% of everything he's released with 3EG, including LOL). Thus I think it's best to qualify blanket generalizing statements about the quality of his music with "IMO", it's a little closer to reality, since you speak only for yourself, as I do me.

Change it one more time..

Overblown production? It's a very sparse, raw-sounding track.

I have to agree with this, my problem with the negative crew isn't that they don't like anything Prince does anymore, it's because they're obviously so self-involved, that they spout 'opinions' as matter of facts and they recycle the same 'facts' so often, that it's hard not to think of them as trolls.

Personally I feel that 'FUNKNROLL' could be straight from P's classic era, it's absolutely slamming and along with 'sticky like glue', one of my favourite songs of the last 10 years.
