Still haven't heard "The Breakdown," but yeah, all of that screaming that he did towards the end of the reworked version of "The Dance" sounded WAY too forced to me at the time.... and IMO he sounds too much like Mick Jagger when he goes, "It's just not fayah!!!"

Really? What type of song is it? A slow ballad? Pop tune? R&b flavored-track? About somebody having a breakdown of some sort?

The lyrics are about a superstar who realizes there is more to life than fortune and fame. "Used 2 have the house with the biggest pool/now I just feel like a fool" I remember that part. Can't tell you more because I only heared it a few times myself but it surely is one of the better new songs. It's actually a song with a melody you can remember and not just an excuse to have a whole lotta guitar solos, which is what most of the 3EG stuff is. And that's why so many fans like it: Prince still has it as a songwriter. He bores us with stuff like LOL and keeps the best songs in the vault...

It's not really a piano ballad. The arrangements are pretty big-sounding except during the verses. I'd say it's stylistically somewhere between "Empty Room" and his 00s ballads like "U're Gonna C Me" (MPLSound version).

Just when the protagonist loses everything. What?

Thanks all. Appreciate it. If it is good as some of you say it is, then I look forward to hearing it, when he releases it.

I hope the studio version is better than the two live versions--a bit too laid back for me, but a decent tune. His attempt at another Purple Rain--you cannot beat the best but I have hopes for the studio version.
I don't buy that he was ever a drinker. All you others say Hell Yea!!

His newer live stuff is all way too laid back for me. Watch the Sign video and see what I mean. No goosebumps from the newer stuff. All you others say Hell Yea!!

I don't buy that he was ever a drinker. He's made quite a few references to alcohol in his lyrics: champaign in 3121, "have another glass of port and try 2 forget this" in The Holy River the vineyards of Lavaux... [Edited 3/10/14 10:42am]

Great track. I miss this type of emotional Prince tracks, musically and lyrically.

It tells me the opposite. Prince said he records songs until he has enough that sounds like they go together. Since the Breakdown sounds nothing like what we've heard from 3rd Eye Girl I would suspect he's saying it's not on THAT album. He might also be farting around with the idea of a 3EG album PLUS an NPG record. Who knows?

I agree that The Breakdown doesn't sound much like the other 3EG stuff and it was interesting Prince mentioned grouping songs together cuz to me FUNKNROLL doesn't sound like its cut from the same cloth as FixurlifeUp, Pretzel and Plectrum but what do I know . As others have said it would be great to get a double album, one with the 3EG guitar tracks and also a good solid Prince album with the likes of Groovy Potential, Breakfast Can Wait etc

Listen to me closely as the story unfolds
This could be the saddest story ever been told I used to want the house with the biggest pool Reminiscing now I just feel like a fool Keep breaking me down, down , down Keep breaking me down, down, down, down I used to throw a party every New Year's Eve First one intoxicated last one to leave Waking up in places that you would not believe Came to play guitar? you can keep the memories Keep breaking me down down, down Keep breaking me down, down, down Every book I read said that I would meet somebody like you Whenever I was sorry so sorry for the things I used to do A journal full of numbers that I used to go through 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 Been hidden now all because of you, you, you Keep breaking me down, down, down Keep breaking me down, down, down Keep breaking me down, down, down Keep breaking me down, down, down ,down You see every door that you can walk through Well it used to be wrong I don't care as long as you catch me If ever there's a fall The closer you get The closer I get The closer we get To the breakdown I know all these lyrics are not perfect he is hard to hear at times during the show please correct where you see fit Cheers [Edited 3/13/14 20:04pm] [Edited 3/13/14 20:34pm] [Edited 3/13/14 20:35pm]

I've wondered a few times, given the timing of him beginning to play this and the subject matter, whether this track was intended for The Great Gatsby soundtrack. "Had to get off the boat so I could walk on water..."

I couldn't wait to hear "The Breakdown" , only to find that it's incredibly unremarkable, much like everything he's done of late.
