I actually like the song, but the band sounded weak. Maybe the studio version will be better.

i've seen the clip 3 times now, i like the performance, but i think there's at the very

least a tape running along his vocals. there are too many effects, echos and even a

couple of multi layers in there. plus, in the first minute he's late getting the mic up

to his mouth smile

same goes for the drum track. perhaps hannah is playing live but there's also just

as audibly another track running along to give the whole thing more 'oomph'. well,

all just to my ear. i'm sure i'll be thrown to the sharks in a minute by the P Police. lol

anywho, i think we actually heard the album take tonight. that's my 2 cents.

I really like the song, although it's basically Hide the Bone, but I did also think that the vocals sounded prerecorded at points

Hey everyone,

I was one of the lucky people who made it into the Arsenio Hall taping yesterday.

Random quick thoughts about it, along with responses to what I've read here thus far:

  • The lines to get in seemed a bit disorganized. There was a small priority line for Prince Army ticket holders and another line for general ticket holders. Most of the general ticket holders did not get in and there were people who waited overnight. That's unfortunate, but these things happen. And unfortunately, the down side of being a Prince fan, is that the management and organization aspect is never smooth. This was no exception. All in all, despite the wait, the studio coordinators were very friendly and were kind enough to provide sandwiches once we waited inside for an additional hour-plus.
  • Songs played: 1) Funk And Roll 2) She's Always In My Hair 3) Mutiny
  • Couldn't believe he played "Mutiny"!!
  • Personally, I liked the horn section.
  • Liv Warfield is talented but it seemed odd to have another musical act on the bill.
  • The performances were not bad at all, but definitely seemed slightly stiff. Keep in mind, this is Prince - a musician's musician who would have played all night straight through if given the option. However, for a conventional TV format, there are specific start/stop/cue times and things must fit into a neat little box for this format. Prince has never fit neatly into a little box. I wouldn't be surprised if he was frustrated with having to stop abruptly.
  • No additional concert or aftershow. It was fun and worth skipping my usual 8:30 PM yoga class.
  • Hoping he plays some additional L.A. shows while he's here.

Prince's vocals was the best part and the hornz saved it at the very end.

^ I agree, Wonder505.

Not that good a performance, but the "overwhelming" horns sounded funky..... at first listen this song was actually disappointing,

I wonder what was revealed during the Arsenio/ fan- interview....?

I like the song, but this performance isn't great. It was so much better seeing it live, and hearing the Machester recording. Plus the horn bit at the end sounds so much better with guitar.

The fiasco outside the taping was not prince's fault. I blame the show and their producers. I had priority seats but when they got the vip list, they changed all seating to first come first served. They could have easily let people with guaranteed seats come in and then keep the first come situation as it was. I think it was wrong to guarantee a seat then two days layer take it away. It makes Prince look bad and he had nothing to do with it.

Prince is a gracious guy, which is great, but I agree that everyone came to see Prince, not anyone else. If the people Prince helps want to perform, they should wait till they are invited on the show.

He had an afterparty at Mohegan back in late december, everyone came to see prince, but guess what everyone got? An entire 10 song set by Liv, Doug E Fresh as the DJ for a few hours, and no performance by Prince, just a get the hell out the party is over. Now that is something to get upset over.

So if it was Hannah singing instead and Prince giving Donna some solo time would that bother you as well?

From the clip I've seen, I agree about 3rdeyegirl not playing funk. They don't bring the funk like the NPG does. 3rdeyegirl is better at playing rock. No disrespect, but Hannah's drumming wasn't bringing it. I always enjoy the horns though. Too many dancers that really wasn't needed, and I rarely complain about a Prince show/concert. The 10 or so dancers overcrowded the stage. The Twinz would have been enough as dancers if he had used them instead.

I like this better than Days of Wild, and 3121

It has a similar vibe to those two, but more straightforward than 3121 and not as lyrically awkward as Days of Wild

I look forward to hearing the studio version

I like Funk and Roll a lot, and I didn't hear anything wrong with this performance, although I've not heard other live versions to compare it to. I agree with 2Elijah that there were too many dancers. The Twinz would have sufficed IMO.

I think what you heard were Josh's accompaniments. Prince has used the vocal echo pedal live for a while now, depending on the song.

The FunkNRoll performance seemed a tad weak. I have to agree with the above post about the corny AF dancers. Not necessary. The best part of the song is that breakdown, which imo is classic. But it doesn't come until the end, so you have to wade through a bunch of mediocrity to hear it. He should've saved that awesome breakdown for a better tune. After watching this, I think I'm more excited for the interview.
