Most of his classic ballads from the 80s were great, but a few of the more dirty ones included alot of breathing, intimate sex sounds, kinky attitude etc etc... Do Me Baby is a great example, and if those parts were edited out, they would be more likable for most people. I personally love it though. But I know it's just not for everyone.

Yeah but as he became older it became creepier. COME sounds like a dirty old man in parts.. "no wonder there's a puddle there, holding it in 4 so long?" WTF!! disbelief

That part's a little tough for me, as well - I think it's because that line is just so hot in the mix. If they'd dialed it down just a touch, I think it wouldn't grate on me. Love the song, though.

One that always cracks me up is in 'Sex', where he's asking all the men to shout "S.E.X", and all the women to shout "is the best!". It must have been 5 am at Paisley Park and he was hard up for some ladies, because all I hear is a few tracks of Prince shouting "is the best!" in a high voice. I almost piss myself laughing every time. falloff

Because it's the most recent glaring example, "Breakfast Can Wait", another clear indication that he desperately could benefit from an outside producer. "Prince, we shouldn't release a single where the last 50 seconds or so jars people into wanting to cut their ears off. And to be realistic, 99.9 percent of the general public doesn't give a shit about you once again sounding like 'Camille'."

Also in Pop Life with all the explosions... too over the top.

The worst has got to be Temptation though.. the God talk never amused me.

It's very sad to read all of this critique.

None of you could possibly reach the level of Prince.

So why try to edit what has already been documented?

There is/was a reason for your interest in the first place, right?

Just for the sake of my contribution to this thread, i'll say that it was exactly

these "unnecessary bullshit" happenings that got me hooked from the start.

Yes, I'm a wet rag.

And whilst we are on the subject, was it really neccessary to have the Lord's prayer in the middle of the song 'Controversy'?

Just ruined the song 4 me...I mean I had just listened to some nasty azz 'Do me baby' and now you wanna make me feel guilty with some church scriptures. Prince, c'mon man. neutral

All My Dreams and Controversy do not have one single second that can be considered as filler. If you don't get the prayer in Controversy, you don't get Prince AT ALL. Move, Punk.

Most of what is being mentioned here is what MAKES his music so unique and brilliant. Can't believe people are dissing The Lord's Prayer in Controversy, ending of Temptation, spoken part of All My Dreams...

This is a good topic. A lot of Prince songs (and even albums) wind up being distracting and often downright ruined by "unnecessary bullshit". 'Exodus', 'The Rainbow Children' and the 'Symbol' album are hard to put on from begining to end because of the stupid segues, "stories' and narration.

.

Whoever mentioned "Sticky Like Glue" was spot on. That's a nice, fluffy little pop/funk song but, yeah, that rap and the the corny lyrics in it ruin it. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the unsequenced "Lovesexy" CD. It's a pretty good record but sometimes I just want to hear 'AnnaStesia', the title track, 'Dance On' or 'Positivity' without having to navigate through the whole record.

.

'The Rainbow Children' all by itself is a great example of what the OP is talking about: Prince ruining great shit with goofy personal messages and unnecessary effects and voice overs.

.

Havng said that, the "Breakfast Can Wait" Cammille voice is fucking great and I have no problem with at all.

Count The Days fails much earlier than most other examples. A great track which shits on its own face by the second line.

Lovely guitar intro
'Here's a church, here's a steeple...'
Lovely vocal harmonies, so far so great
'...here's a motherfucker I gotta blow away'

Some superb vocal and guitar work is totally ruined by the retarded and inappropriate lyrics. Prince's talent was still intact at this point but his judgement would never recover.

That's a good example - I always thought that line to be completely incongruous and vulgar...it totally flies in the face of the gentle mood that had been created.

The Breakfast Can Wait chipmunk is just a bizarre decision, it doesn't work for me.

I do agree with some others that the unpredictability and self indulgence of his music adds charm and interest more often than not. He gives precious little of himself away compared to other artists, so anything that lifts the veil is fine with me.

The couple of seconds of silence before 'Betcha By Golly Wow' are really good, then the rest is embarrassing.
